SCMS celebrates K-PREP score
Special to the News-Graphic
Last year the students
at Scott County Middle
School earned a Proficient
rating on the Kentucky
Performance Rating of Educational Progress Test (KPREP) for the first time.
As part of their goal setting the students made a
deal with the Principal, Jennifer Sutton, to spend the
day on the roof if they met
proficiency.
She gladly accepted the
challenge and enjoyed honoring it.
For the 2015-2016 school
year the students again set
goals and challenged the
principal.
Their goal was to maintain their Proficiency rating
with a higher percentage
score while working towards becoming a distinguished school in the near
future. In return Mrs. Sutton agreed to be duct taped
to the wall during cafeteria
hours. (Students top choice)
KPREP scores for 20152016 were released Sept. 29,
2016.
Scott County Middle
School earned an overall
score of 69.7. That score secured their Proficiency rating by beating the cut score
of 65.8. They missed the cut
score 70.2 for Distinguished

Garth welcomes orchestra, McKee
On Thursday, Oct. 20, fourth grade
students from Garth Elementary
School were treated to an amazing concert by The Lexington
Philharmonic. The theme for this
year’s educational program was
The Legend of The Northern Lights.
This concert combined astronomy
and music and drama into a visually
entertaining performance. Narrated
by Peter Van de Graf, the show
combined the music of Cristopher
Theofanidis and composer Jean Sibelius’ with the visuals of astronomer
Jose Francisco Salgado. The students
were captivated and focused for the
entire show. Thanks to the Lexington
Philharmonic Title 1 music education program, the students at Garth
Elementary were able to experience
what it is like to hear classical music in
a professional setting.
On Friday, Oct. 21, 2016 at 10 a.m.,
Kentucky State Representative Tom
McKee came to Garth Elementary
School with a historic declaration on
behalf of the Kentucky Legislature
in celebration of Garth Elementary’s
90th birthday. This assembly was
held in front of the school’s ifth
grade students as Representative
McKee made the presentation to
principal Terry Quillen.

by only half a point.
The students not only met
their goal but were close to
exceeding it.
The student’s efforts were
celebrated at a school wide
assembly.
It was announced that not
only would the principal be
duct taped to the wall, but
four other student choices
would be honored as well
during the week of Oct. 1721.
