Education 8A Georgetown News-Graphic Thursday, November 10, 2016 www.news-graphic.com SCMS celebrates K-PREP score Special to the News-Graphic Last year the students at Scott County Middle School earned a Proficient rating on the Kentucky Performance Rating of Educational Progress Test (KPREP) for the first time. As part of their goal setting the students made a deal with the Principal, Jennifer Sutton, to spend the day on the roof if they met proficiency. She gladly accepted the challenge and enjoyed honoring it. For the 2015-2016 school year the students again set goals and challenged the principal. Their goal was to maintain their Proficiency rating with a higher percentage score while working towards becoming a distinguished school in the near future. In return Mrs. Sutton agreed to be duct taped to the wall during cafeteria hours. (Students top choice) KPREP scores for 20152016 were released Sept. 29, 2016. Scott County Middle School earned an overall score of 69.7. That score secured their Proficiency rating by beating the cut score of 65.8. They missed the cut score 70.2 for Distinguished PHOTO SUBMITTED Garth welcomes orchestra, McKee On Thursday, Oct. 20, fourth grade students from Garth Elementary School were treated to an amazing concert by The Lexington Philharmonic. The theme for this year’s educational program was The Legend of The Northern Lights. This concert combined astronomy and music and drama into a visually entertaining performance. Narrated by Peter Van de Graf, the show combined the music of Cristopher Theofanidis and composer Jean Sibelius’ with the visuals of astronomer Jose Francisco Salgado. The students were captivated and focused for the entire show. Thanks to the Lexington Philharmonic Title 1 music education program, the students at Garth Elementary were able to experience what it is like to hear classical music in a professional setting. On Friday, Oct. 21, 2016 at 10 a.m., Kentucky State Representative Tom McKee came to Garth Elementary School with a historic declaration on behalf of the Kentucky Legislature in celebration of Garth Elementary’s 90th birthday. This assembly was held in front of the school’s ifth grade students as Representative McKee made the presentation to principal Terry Quillen. The students not only met their goal but were close to exceeding it. The student’s efforts were celebrated at a school wide assembly. It was announced that not only would the principal be duct taped to the wall, but four other student choices would be honored as well during the week of Oct. 1721.
