Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC)
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is comprised of
leaders from each team who represent their fellow student-athletes
and act as liaisons to the University of Arkansas, the Athletic Department, the SEC and the NCAA.
On Tuesday, March 16th, Associate Athletic Director—Public Relations, Kevin Trainor continued the initiative of senior staff to visit
with SAAC. Kevin bleeds Razorback Red, as he is in his 20th year
with Arkansas Athletics.
Through the athletic department’s partnership
with Nike, one of our Razorback Student-Athletes
has the opportunity to participate in Nike’s summer
internship at their corporate headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon.
Additionally, the Hogspy Awards is a SAAC initiative that recognizes
student-athlete accomplishments. They are in the final efforts of
finalizing the promotions and awards. Committee members are also in
charge of the internal operations and behind-the-scenes of this event.
Junior Softball studentathlete, Parker Pocklington, has earned this summer’s spot as the Nike Basketball Sports Marketing
Intern. This is a 12-week
long program in which
interns will engage in various speaker series, lunch
& learns, and networking
events.

Technology in Education
Millennials are characterized by their instant gratification expectations, always
connectedness, and tech-savvy abilities. Many of them have grown up with the
Internet and utilizing social media to keep in touch with friends or communicate
their thoughts to the world. Keeping with this trend, advances in educational
technology have been implemented to help serve this group of ‘connected’ students find success in the classroom.
The University of Arkansas Athletics Department recognizes and embraces this
trend. Several assistive technologies have been purchased for the educational enrichment of student-athletes. Specifically by using technologies such as Read &
Write Gold and LiveScribe, the athletic department has been able to improve the
quality of services provided to Razorback athletes.
Read & Write Gold is a computer software designed to enhance a student’s reading
and writing skills. By uploading an assignment, this software has the ability to
read text to the student for better comprehension. Read & Write also has the capability to convert a student’s speech to text in a word document.
LiveScribe is a pen that utilizes a specialized notebook to help our studentathletes take more effective notes. The pen is able to record lecture in congruence
with the pen strokes in the notebook, allowing the students to review their notes
at a specific time during the lecture.

Maria Fassi
Freshman
Pachuca, Mexico
Women’s Golf
Recreation & Sports Management
Maria is in her first semester of college and has only lived in the
U.S. for about a month now. Despite the many challenges and adjustments, this Mexican native did what no other first-year player in
the history of Razorback women’s golf has ever done. She won her
FIRST collegiate golf tournament! Along with athletics, she is adjusting very well to college and always has a good attitude. Maria
has exceptional grades in her classes and consistently stays on top
of her coursework. She meets her study hall requirements weekly
and is productive when the team travels for extended periods of
time.

Denzell continues to mature and take initiative concerning his academics. He’s more aware of what resources are available to him
and taking advantage of them. He is now able to recognize when
he’s struggling and make adjustments to improve his performance.
He works very hard outside of class and does an excellent job of
tracking his assignments. These are all skills he’s gained over the
course of his time at Arkansas. We are proud of his growth and
look forward to his continued success in the classroom.
Student-athletes visited the Arkansas Children’s Hospital – Lowell Clinic on Feb. 11 and the
Fayetteville VA Medical Center on
Feb. 12 as part of Valentine’s Day
festivities with patients in each
facility.
“Whenever we as student-athletes
are willing to take time and step
away from our routines, we gain
perspective on what actually matters in life,” said sophomore tennis player Branch Terrell.

Stand Strong, Stand Together
S3T, better known as Stand Strong, Stand Together, is a support group for female student-athletes facilitated by the female
staff of the Office of Student-Athlete Success (OSAS). The group was designed from the mission statement of OSAS to inspire
and empower Razorback student-athletes, specifically the fantastic group of female student-athletes, to grow as individuals.
The group creates an environment where the athletes can create authentic relationships that promote empowerment, selfesteem, and unity.
During the first meeting of this semester, Monday, February 29th, over 50 student-athletes were able to engage with over 11
staff members, with activities focused on self-reflection. They used the information from the self-reflection to prompt some
dream building exercises and create individual goal statements.
The group also gives the female student-athletes additional opportunities to bond with other female athletes outside of their
respective sport. The next meeting for the semester will be Monday, April 18th.
