Brought to you by: October is Liver Awareness Month Two Myths regarding liver disease: *It is easy to know if you have liver disease. Fact: About 75 percent of the population infected with hepatitis B and hepatitis C is unaware they are even infected. *Liver disease is primarily caused by alcohol and drug abuse. Fact: While that continues to be one of the causes, liver disease can occur for many other reasons including the mounting obesity rate. In October The Liver Foundation is focusing attention on the alarming increase in the incidence of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease which affects up to 20 percent of adults and it is primarily a condition of middle age. As its name suggests, NAFLD is the buildup of extra fat in the liver that isn’t caused by alcohol. Most often, it tends to develop in people who are overweight or obese or have diabetes, high cholesterol or high triglycerides. Sedentary behavior is another major contributing factor to its onset. In addition to encouraging people to lose weight, doctors will often advise people with diabetes who have fatty liver disease or NASH to be vigilant about controlling their blood sugar. That’s why exercising at EngAge Wellness is not only fun, but it is very important to maintaining a healthy liver! Cells in nearly any part of the body can become cancer, and can spread to other areas of the body. A breast cancer is a malignant tumor that starts from cells of the breast. A malignant tumor is a group of cancer cells that may invade surrounding tissues or spread to distant areas of the body. Breast cancer occurs mainly in women, but men can get it, too. Many people do not realize that men have breast tissue and that they can develop breast cancer. The American Cancer Society® fights cancer by funding research, advocating for policy changes, and providing information and support for patients and families. One of the ways we can support cancer research is by participating in our local awareness raising events. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer® will hold a fundraiser walk (Making Strides of Lincoln) on October 25th at Holmes Lake Park in Lincoln, NE. If you cannot make this event, consider starting this month by making a commitment to maintain a healthy body weight and engage in regular physical activity to help reduce your breast cancer risk. The American Cancer Society recommends the following cancer screening guidelines for most adults: Yearly mammograms starting at age 40 and continuing for as long as a woman is in good health. Clinical breast exam every year for women 40 and over. Women should know how their breasts normally look and feel and report any breast changes to a health care provider right away. Talk with a doctor about your history and whether you should have other tests or start testing at an earlier age. ANSWERS are on the back!! Michelle’s Massage Message The American Massage Therapy Association wrote an article last year, about the “5 Ways Massage Can Improve Your Health”… #2 — Increase Immunity Medical research indicates that massage therapy can help boost the immune system by increasing the activity level of the body’s natural “killer T cells,” which fight off viruses. Read what research has found in relation to massage & the immune system, by clicking on the link above… To see the entire article on how massage can improve your health, visit: https://www.amtamassage.org/articles/1/News/detail/2885 October is Physical Therapy Month National Physical Therapy Month is hosted by the America Physical Therapy Association, with assistance from the Academy of Geriatric Physical Therapy, to recognize how physical therapists and physical therapist assistants help transform society by restoring and improving motion in people's lives. This October, the focus is on healthy aging: informing consumers that they can receive an evaluation directly from a physical therapist, who can help people overcome pain, maintain vital mobility, and preserve their independence as they age. Exercise may be the closest thing we have to the fountain of youth. The right type and amount of it can help prevent or manage many age-related health conditions. On Twitter, seek out the #AgeWell campaign to learn about nine important things adults can do, with the help of a physical therapist, to age well. At this hashtag they will also share the ways in which treatment by a physical therapist helps address many concerns adults have about aging. (Or if you don’t have Twitter, you can read above the article mentioned, on the Move Forward™ website). Visit APTA.org throughout October to access additional resources as they become available.
