I was that “skinny” kid. I gained weight during the years my kids were born. It seemed I gradually
gained weight not because I was overeating but because I didn’t eat right and have a regular
schedule due to work, school and kids. I always made excuses on why my clothes didn’t fit. I saw
a picture of myself and was shocked as to how heavy I was. I had to go to the doctor and she
stated I was borderline diabetic. I was shocked and upset with myself because how could I let
myself get this way. I always said I didn’t want to be that overweight mom. After I left the
doctor’s office I called my friend who had lost 80 pounds on the Ideal Protein diet so I asked her
what I needed to do. I contracted Hilltop Chiropractic and meet with Dr. Marla and Rochelle and
this is where my journey has begun. I am down 25 pounds in two months and feel so awesome.
I have also started seeing Dr. Marla for lower back pain and better health. I have to say that my
back pain is getting much better and I am feeling better every day. Dr. Marla is very dedicated to
her patients and works to make your life better in every way.
I know my journey in not over in losing weight and maintaining the weight I want to be but I
know I have a great support system to see that I reach that goal.
Thank you Dr. Marla, Rochelle and Stephanie for your encouragement and incredible support.

I've been a patient of Dr. Marla's for over 15 years. My husband, Mike has been her
patient much longer. In my early 20's, many years ago, I was in a couple of car
accidents and have had back trouble ever since. I've seen different chiropractors since
then. They have all helped me but I only went until I felt better. One chiropractor
retired, the next one had to retire because of health issues, so my husband referred
me to Dr. Marla. I decided to go on a more regular basis, so now I go twice a
month for maintenance. I find doing that keeps me healthier. Occasionally, when
my back does go out, or neck or knees, or shoulder, she'll get me in for an
adjustment. She fixes me right up. Dr. Marla gave me extra special care after my
cancer surgery so while I was healing I would be more comfortable. I'm so glad I
have Dr. Marla as my chiropractor, she's the Best!

Thanks in no small part to a reliance on and addiction to
technology, a sedentary lifestyle has become the norm. As a
result, good posture has never been more important, but
unfortunately, our obsession with our smartphones has made
many of us develop forward head posture.
Why is this bad? Every time we lean forward 60 degrees, the
stress on our necks is increased by approximately 60 pounds. In
fact, every time you move your head forward an inch, an extra
10 pounds of weight is added to your neck. As a result, forward
head posture leads to chronic pain, numbness in the arms and
hands, improper breathing, and pinched nerves.
That’s not all. It turns out, forward head posture doesn’t just
affect us physically — it affects our mood as well. Thanks in no
small part to our smartphone addiction, aka nomophobia, most
of us are constantly putting undue strain on our necks and spinal
cords, which has adverse effects on our emotions.
How Forward Head Posture Affects Mood and Brain Function
That’s right: Not only do asthma and heart disease begin in your neck, but so does your brain health. For
instance, posture has an impact on feelings of stress, mood, memory and even behavior.
A 2010 study conducted in Brazil examined posture and body image in people with major depressive disorder.
Over 10 weeks, 34 participants with depression and 37 healthy volunteers had their posture assessed.
Researchers found that patients’ posture changed, including instances of forward head posture, during episodes
of depression, and there was a “mild dissatisfaction with body image.” Further, the Department of Clinical
Psychology at the University of Hildesheim in Germany gathered 30 depressed inpatients to “investigate the
effects of sitting posture on the tendency of depressed individuals to recall a higher proportion of negative selfreferent material.” The findings showed that posture can affect memory.
Researchers concluded that good posture in the face of stress maintains self-esteem, improves mood, increases
rate of speech and reduces self-focus. Meanwhile, poor posture actually resulted in more stress, potentially
leading to chronic stress.
How to Improve Posture
The good news is there are many steps you can take to correct your slumping or forward head posture. For
instance,. Chiropractic adjustments can help relieve joint pain and promote better posture.
Of course, you can always incorporate posture exercises to correct that pesky forward head posture and
improve your mood and mental health. These include:


arm circles
arm closes

cats and dogs

lateral raises (straight and bent)

rows

pull-ups

With the Powerball lottery jackpot reaching insane heights
— to the tune of over $1.5 billion — many people are
dreaming about how all that money will make them happy.
Yet, as the saying goes, money doesn’t buy happiness, and
according to recent findings from a 75-year (and counting)
happiness study, this idiom appears to be 100 percent true.
In fact, according to psychiatrist, psychoanalyst
and Zen priest Robert Waldinger, the director of the Harvard
Study of Adult Development (aka the Harvard Happiness
Study), “The clearest message that we get from this 75-year
study is this: Good relationships keep us happier and
healthier, period.”
This, of course, is in contrast to what most of us believe.
Waldinger, citing a study in which 80 percent of Millennials
said a major life goal was to get rich and 50 percent said
another major goal was to become famous, said, “We’re
constantly told to lean into work, to push harder and achieve more. We’re given the impression that these are
the things that we need to go after in order to have a good life.” But according to the Harvard Happiness Study
— and what we’ve learned from the world’s longest-living cultures — those aren’t the things that make us
happy. It’s those healthy, sustained relationships that make us truly fulfilled.
Relationships and Happiness
Three big lessons on relationships have been unveiled through the Harvard Happiness Study, which Waldinger
shared in his TED Talk.
1. Social Connections Matter
Researchers have found that people who have more social connections to family, friends and community
are happier, physically healthier and live longer than people with fewer social connections.
2. Quality Is More Important than Quantity
The number of social connections isn’t an indicator of happiness, necessarily, however. Our close
relationships must be healthy relationships in order to influence our happiness in a positive manner.
3. Good Relationships Protect Our Brains
In addition to longer life and better physical health, sustaining healthy relationships protects our brains
as well. Our memories stay sharper longer, especially when we feel we can count on people with whom
we have close relationships.
How to Apply the Happiness Study Findings
Truth be told, these lessons aren’t all that shocking. We’ve known seemingly forever that happy, healthy, close
relationships are good for our health. However, it’s something many people ignore for myriad reasons: financial
pressures, chronic stress, societal expectations, etc.
So how can we take a step back from the 21st-century “always on” mentality and put more focus on our lives
outside of work and the online world? Waldinger suggested a few ways:
 Replace screen time with people time. That means overcoming nomophobia.
 Liven up a stale relationship by doing something new together — long walks or date nights, for example.

Reach out to a family member you haven’t spoken to in years.

Let go of family feuds and grudges.


Focus on personal well-being, both physical and mental. Practice healing prayer.
Build those close relationships.
