Overcoming
barriers
Douglas College Foundation
board members are passionate
about education. We believe in
Douglas College’s ability to inspire,
motivate and energize students
and faculty. Our Executive Director
and her staff work with individual
and corporate donors to ensure
that financial barriers do not
prevent students from achieving
their educational goals. We are
all doing what we love, thanks to
the generosity of you, our donors.
Together we helped more than
2,000 students this past year to
study hard and dream big.

Helping
students seize
opportunities
Douglas College is a place where
students are encouraged to explore, to
try new things, to discover their passion
and learn to be good at it. At Douglas,
students are able to participate inside
and outside the classroom, join clubs,
volunteer in the community and seize
global learning opportunities.
Foundation staff work hard to ensure
that everyone has access to education
and that instructors have the equipment
they need to offer high quality, applied
learning. We get our energy from
our students and our inspiration from
you, our donors. We are privileged
to be the conduit through which your
philanthropy flows, and we’re honoured
to be the stewards of your generosity.
On behalf of the Foundation staff, thank
you for helping us help our students.

I AM IN
MY FINAL
SEMESTER
studying to become a Veterinary
Technologist. This assistance comes at
a very important time – I am required to
write the Veterinary Technician National
Examination in July/August of this year. I
was surprised to find out the cost of the
exam is $300 USD. I cannot work as
a registered technician without having
successfully written the exam, so this
money will be put to good use.
I am a mature student, returning to
school. The staff, instructors and “behindthe-scenes” folk have been nothing
but awesome during my two years at
Douglas. Thank you sincerely for helping
me make my academic years a success
and the future that much brighter.

FOLLOWING
HER DREAMS
Jodi has built a career around
helping people discover their
strengths and overcome barriers.
For 15 years she worked in special
education, and now she helps run an
employment centre for adults. Along
the way, she’s learned that sharing
her positive outlook can inspire
others.
“My life has not been easy, as a
single parent raising my three kids,”
Jodi says. “My work is about relating
to clients and going, ‘Yep, I’ve been
on income assistance. Yep, I’ve
struggled finding jobs. But you know
what? I’m still following my dreams.’”
One of Jodi’s biggest dreams is
to advance her education. She is
now completing the Classroom
and Community Support diploma
program at Douglas College. After
that, she plans to pursue a Bachelor
of Arts in Community Rehabilitation.
Working full time while being
a student hasn’t been easy for
Jodi, but the financial support
she received has made a world of
difference. “I’ve faced some huge
financial challenges. Without these
bursaries to help me continue with
my education, I wouldn’t be where
I am,” she says. “It’s so supportive
and encouraging and just gives me a
feeling of ‘I can do this.’”

Events

Our annual event to recognize the generosity of
our donors – Celebrate – saw us welcome about
40 corporate donors to lunch and 60 individual
donors to tea at the New Westminster Campus
for a celebration that included Student Research
Day. Student award recipients spoke movingly of
the challenges they face and the affirmation that
comes with receiving awards made possible by the
generosity of people in their community.
LEGACY
GIVING
seminars
16th annual
A Class
Act
Education was at the root of the two Legacy
Giving seminars hosted by the Foundation. The
free sessions, held at the New Westminster and
Coquitlam campuses, focused on financial and estate
planning, and travel options and insurance. The
information was well received, sessions were well
attended and money for bursaries was raised through
sponsorships.
The 16th annual A Class Act drew 250 people to
the Coquitlam Campus for an Oktoberfest evening of
beer and wine tasting, netting $30,000 for student
aid. Hospitality Management students worked with
Foundation staff to deliver an entertaining and
educational event supported by local businesses who
gave generously to the live and silent auctions.
The Uganda Quiz Night, co-hosted with the Rotary
Club of Coquitlam Sunrise, raised close to $5,000
for literacy initiatives in Uganda, where students
from the Faculty of Child, Family and Community
Studies do 10–week practicum placements. They
work in schools, clinics, hospitals, HIV/AIDs clinics,
in daycares and with street children.
Coquitlam Centre hosted the third annual Unwined
at the mall in May 2013 with 500 guests sampling
wine and food from local restaurants and bidding on
an eclectic silent auction. The event raised $20,000
for students in the TriCities, divided equally between
Douglas College Foundation and the Coquitlam
Foundation.

I AM
FURTHERING
MY SKILLS
– both professional and personal – which I
look forward to putting to good use in the
helping of others. Mental health has a need
for empathetic, understanding workers who
help instill hope in clients, often grieving
their losses. The Psychosocial Rehabilitation
program at Douglas has been an illuminating
and very hopeful program. Your generosity is
much appreciated and is going to good use.

TODAY
I GRADUATE
from the Child and Youth Care
Counsellor Diploma program
at Douglas College. Without
the assistance of Financial Aid I
would never have been able to
reconcile my previous student loan
debt, afford college, or navigate
the college bureaucracy to allow
me back with a 1.0 GPA and on
academic probation, let alone stand
with my cohort at convocation. Your
faith has inspired me to not only
succeed but to excel in my program
by bringing that 1.0 GPA to a 2.84
as well as making the Dean’s List
for the Winter 2014 Semester with
a 4.03 GPA. With utmost sincerity
and gratitude, David.

ONE STEP CLOSER
“When the opportunity to become an
interpreter was presented, it was like:
here’s something that I enjoy doing
at home, that I will want to teach my
kids and that will allow me to give
back to the community,” he says.
Kyle Cardno wants to make a
difference in the lives of people who
are Deaf or hard of hearing. That’s
why he decided to leave behind
a job in retail sales and pursue a
new career path – becoming a sign
language interpreter.
Receiving a bursary has pushed Kyle
one step closer to his career goal.
“When I applied for financial support,
I wasn’t expecting anything, so when
I was awarded the bursary it was a
great surprise,” he says. “It helped
me pay off debt, get back on track
and continue with my studies. I’m so
grateful.”
Kyle was initially inspired to learn
how to sign by his fiancée, who is
hard of hearing. As his interest in
sign language grew, he decided
to enrol in the Sign Language
Interpretation program at Douglas
College, in which he has already
gained valuable experience as a
volunteer interpreter.

IT FEELS
AMAZING TO BE
RECOGNIZED
FOR MY STUDIES.
“I would like to express my overflowing gratitude
for having received this scholarship. I was ecstatic
when I received the awarding letter. It feels amazing
to be recognized for my studies, especially for
those in a subject that I plan to both major in and
teach. As an independently living young adult, I can
only begin to express how much I appreciate the
support. Thank you for recognizing and supporting
me through the quest to achieve my academic and
professional dreams.”
