HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS: Hubert leads late charge over Carlisle County. | 2B Sports Section The Paducah Sun | Wednesday, December 4, 2013 | paducahsun.com B PTHS wears down Fulton County BY JAMES D. HORNE [email protected] Paducah Tilghman welcomed a pesky Fulton County team to Tornado Alley Tuesday night and used its depth to cruise to a 85-55 season-opening victory. Tilghman (1-0) was aided by Andre Strayhorn’s game-high 20 and Jerome Reed’s 14. Mikey Davis provided 11 points and Devon Hart put in 10. Fulton County got 13 points from Davis Major, 11 from Steven Roberson and Aaron King added 10. “We adjusted to the officiating and went to a zone to try to slow down their penetration,” Tilghman coach Brad Steig said. “We just let them get to the foul line way too much in the first half. But our depth did help and wore them down just a little bit. But they have a good ballclub. It was a good way for us to start the season and win our first game.” The game was close in the first quarter, and Tilghman took a 2317 lead on Strayhorn’s 3-pointer with 1.8 seconds to go. Fulton County (0-1) fought back and took its only lead 25-24 when Roberson hit the back-end of two free throws with 6:07 to play before halftime. The Blue Tornado ended the first half on a 20-8 run and took a 44-33 lead into the break. Tilghman made it a 20-point advantage, 67-47, when Davis’ shot went in at the buzzer at the end of the third. “They were a little deeper,” Fulton County coach Mitchell Williamson said. “They kept subbing and we have two subs, and it got away from us. We tried to run with them, and as much as we shouldn’t have we kept doing it and just couldn’t help it. I really liked our first half, we had good defense. But there were a lot of foul calls. I know they hit more free throws than we did. But I’m happy with our first game. We’re just not as deep.” The fourth quarter saw Tilghman outscore Fulton County 188. Aaron Armstrong made the final score with a bucket with 43.2 seconds to go. Tilghman’s explosive third quarter quiets Calloway Losers of 3 straight, Racers host Evansville BY JAMES D. HORNE [email protected] BY JAMES D. HORNE [email protected] Paducah Tilghman used an explosive third quarter and was helped out by Karlee Humphrey’s 28 points and Alex Kohler’s 20 to defeat Calloway County 81-66 in a season-opening, non-district game for both teams Tuesday night at Tornado Alley. The Lady Tornado (1-0) also got a nice contribution from Jalisa Smith and her 18 points. Calloway County was led by Summer Simmons’ 21 points, Ashlyn Stalls’ 12, with Abbey Spann adding 11 and Danielle Potts 10. “The first quarter we went man for a while and got in foul trouble and really couldn’t get into any type of a rhythm,” Tilghman coach Roderick Thomas said. “End of the second quarter and throughout the rest of the game we went to a zone and it worked in our favor. We got them to miss some shots and capitalized on those by getting rebounds and it really got us into a good rhythm. LOUIS — The owners of the Edward Jones Dome said Tuesday they are hopeful the St. Louis Rams won’t leave after city leaders rejected $700 million in publicly funded upgrades sought by the team under a clause some officials now regret signing. The Rams can break their 30year lease after the 2014 season — a decade early — but have said little about their plans beyond expressing an interest to stay. That isn’t keeping stadium boosters from hoping for the best. “Everything is in play,” said attorney James Shrewsbury, chairman of the St. Louis Regional Convention and Sports Complex Authority, which owns the downtown dome. “There’s nothing off the table.” The lease requires that the dome, which opened when the Rams arrived from southern California in 1995, remain among the top quarter of the 32 NFL stadiums. It was built with money from city, St. Louis County and Missouri taxpayers. BY CLAY BAILEY Associated Press MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Jon Leuer’s career night and Ed Davis’ doubledouble helped the Memphis Grizzlies fill a void left by two key injuries. Leuer scored a careerhigh 23 points, Davis added 21 points and 12 rebounds, and the Grizzlies made the best of their makeshift lineup to defeat the Phoenix Suns 110-91 Tuesday night. Leuer and Davis got plenty of playing time because of injuries to frontline starters Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol. “When they are out, we just want to fill in for them,” said Davis, who started in Randolph’s spot. Leuer, who came off the bench, connected on 10 of 13 shots, Davis made 8 of 11, and seven players finished in double figures for Memphis, which shot 55 percent from the floor. In addition to a careerhigh in points, Leuer had three blocks, another career-best, and matched his career-high with nine rebounds. “I think early in the game getting in there and grabbing a few rebounds and knocking my first couple of shots down (helped) and getting some easy baskets,” said Leuer, who entered the game averaging 2.9 points and 1.7 rebounds. “You get into a rhythm after that. . Confidence starts to build, and from there on I was just feeling good.” Mike Conley had 18 points and 14 assists for Memphis, which snapped a four-game losing streak at home. Marcus Morris led the Suns with 18 points, Goran Dragic added 16 and Miles Plumlee had 11. Memphis played its second straight game without Randolph, who had ingrown toenail surgery Saturday. Gasol is out indefinitely with a left knee sprain. Kosta Koufos, starting in place of Gasol, finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Tony Allen scored 11 points. Tayshaun Prince and Jerryd Bayless had 10 points each. “The key is to try and spread it around because I can’t do it by myself,” Conley said. “Tony (Allen) can’t do it by himself. We have to have everybody collectively chip in.” The turnaround in the game came in the second half when Memphis hit two-thirds of its shot and outscored the Suns 64-37. “The second half was terrible,” Suns coach Jeff Hornacek said. “We have to be able to fight over screens. We have to get after it. We let their guy just shove you in the back. If we have no more fight than that, what else can you do?” block out down low and we were still only down five at the half. I really saw some really good things from our team tonight. One thing we’re going to work on is our defense, our help-side and our rebounding. We do that, we’ll be fine.” The third quarter saw the Lady Tornado open on a 20-5 run and they took a commanding 5434 advantage on a Kohler free throw with 28.8 seconds to go in the period. Tilghman took its biggest lead of the game, 7956, with 1:25 left in the fourth on two Humphrey free throws. Visitors Commission, which manages the dome, last year offered a $124 million improvement plan that included a bigger scoreboard and better club seating, with the Rams paying slightly more half those costs. The team countered with a far more ambitious proposal that called for a new roof with a sliding panel and a bevy of improvements that would keep the city convention center in the dome closed for three years. The team didn’t put a price tag on its request, but city officials estimated the upgrades would cost $700 million. Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon has taken over negotiations with Rams owner Stan Kroenke after arbitration between the team, the commission and the stadium authority failed. Visitors commission chairman Andrew Leonard said he’s been assured by Nixon that keeping the Rams in St. Louis is a top priority. The city has already lost one NFL franchise — the football Cardinals moved to Arizona after the 1987 season when owner Bill Bidwill was unable to get a stadium of his own rather than share Busch Stadium with the baseball Cardinals. “The governor told me he was going to (keep the Rams in St. Louis),” Leonard said Tuesday during a quarterly meeting of the sports authority’s governing board. “I took him at his word.” Leonard served on that very board two decades ago, helping to craft the lease that could lead to the Rams’ departure. He wasn’t circumspect about its long-term value. “That was the best deal we could get,” he told the board. “We did what we could...It’s the price we paid for getting the Rams.” A Rams spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Rams opposed the public release of their stadium proposal, but Missouri’s attorney general released the plan under the state’s public records laws. Nixon’s office also did not respond to an interview request. The Rams are reportedly considering several stadium locations in St. Louis County, where the team’s practice facility and headquarters are located. RACERS CONTINUED FROM 1B with their motion, understanding the reads we need to make and how to guard screens. “So we’re really going to have to be locked in on the defensive end.” While Prohm hopes the Racers come out with a win tonight, he feels one wouldn’t completely repair the problems they’ve had this season, particularly with free-throw shooting and overall defense. Murray State is allowing opponents to average 74.9 points a game and 81.3 during the losing streak, thanks to the 75 allowed in the loss at Auburn, the 80 in the loss at home to Middle Tennessee and 89 at St. Mary’s. The Racers are shooting 62.6 percent at the freethrow line and have shot above 75 percent once this season, making 75.8 percent in a win over Brescia, which plays in the NAIA. “They think winning a game is going to give them confidence and that it will change things,” Prohm said. “We can win (tonight) and it won’t change things, because we’ve got to do things differently, better and the way we’ve always done them. “That’s what we have to get back to. I think they’re doing OK. They understand when you look around and see all the banners that you’re not supposed to be 2-5. We haven’t been 2-5 since my first year here. But I should feel it more than anybody. They shouldn’t feel it.” Call James D.
