Chapter 3 Section 2 Terrestrial Biomes Weather Condition of the atmosphere at a specific place and time. Hot Cold Dry Precipitating What effects does Latitude have on climate? Since the earth is tilted and round the light from the sun reaches the earth at different angles. The different angles allow for the differences in radiation that the earth receives. This difference is what gives the different temperatures. Climate The average weather conditions in an area, including temperature and precipitation, describe the area’s climate. The graph shows how temperature and precipitation influence the communities. Biomes Tundra Cold and dry Treeless Permafrost-permanently frozen soil Dark most of the year South of the polar ice caps Biomes Boreal forest Dense evergreen forests (conifers) Summers are short, winters are long Cold and dry; but lack permafrost layer Under the tundra Biomes Temperate forest Broad leaved deciduous trees (trees that shed leaves in autumn Winters are cold, summers are hot Spring has a lot of rainfall that restarts growth cycle. Biomes Temperate woodlands and shrublands Less annual rainfall than Temperate forest Dominated by shrubs Summers are very hot and dry; winters are cool and wet Biomes Temperate grasslands Fertile soils Thick grasses Drought, grazing animals and fire keep this area from becoming forests Summers are hot, winters are cold Moderate rainfall Biomes Desert Exist in every continent except europe Dry- annual rate of evaporation exceeds precipitation (desert) Varying temperatures Low rainfall Biomes Tropical savanna Grasses and scattered trees Receive less rainfall than other tropical areas Summers are hot and rainy; winters are cool and dry Biomes Tropical seasonal forest Rainfall is seasonal During dry season most trees drop leaves to conserve water. Biomes tropical rain forest Very rainy and humid Warm temperatures throughout the year Most divers of all land biomes Area around the equator in South America, Africa Australia, and Asia Biomes Mountains Temperature and precipitation change as the elevation of the mountain changes. Typically there will be less organisms and life as the elevation increases. Biomes Polar regions Border the tundra at high latitudes; Antarctica in the lower latitudes Cold all year round The Arctic summer is warm enough to grow some vegetables in some areas.
