Building The Future in District 88:
Construction Underway!
Construction will be underway
for Building The Future at both
Addison Trail and Willowbrook High
Schools during the
2008-09 school year.
The administration and
staff are committed to
providing a safe learning environment with
the least amount of
disruption.
As significant changes occur,
such as the re-location of classrooms
or traffic patterns inside and outside
of the building, students will be
notified through signage and bulletin
announcements. The daily communication between staff and students will
be important to ensuring success
during the ongoing transitions.
Safety and security in the
buildings remain a top priority,
particularly with numerous contractors and machinery on campus.
The requirement of having all adults
register at the main entrance and
display identification will continue to
be an important safety measure.
Please note that construction will be
year round to meet the targeted
completion date of 2010.
Although the project requires flexibility
from the entire school
community, the renovations and enhancements will offer
students relevant and
future-oriented opportunities for learning.

DuPage Area
Occupational Education System
DAOES is one of
Illinois’ regional Career and
Technical Education (CTE)
systems, based in Addison.
Its two main functions are
to plan for the delivery of
CTE for the western suburbs
and to oversee the operation
of the Technology Center of
DuPage in Addison. Fourteen
area high school districts,
including DuPage District 88, comprise the
DAOES governing board.
DAOES provides career exploration
services to over 50,000 9th-12th graders
and educational support to more than 5,000
certified school staff members.
A major DAOES regional project is the
implementation of Tech
Prep, a program that prepares
students for post-secondary
education, whether college,
technical school, or industry
apprenticeships.
Agencies
such
as
College of DuPage and the
University of Illinois partner
with DAOES to improve
academic competencies of
students. DAOES also establishes partnerships
with area businesses and industries to provide
DuPage area students with the most current
career information and work-based learning
opportunities.

TCD: not your father’s DAVEA
Students now have the opportunity to earn
transferable college credit through their
TCD program. The learning style is still
hands-on, individualized, and self-paced, but
the emphasis is on transitioning to a collegelevel program.
In the past three years,
students enrolled in TCD programs
have earned over $2 million
in scholarships
Longtime Addison residents can remember
the 1974 opening of DAVEA, a high school
vocational campus. It prepared students for
entry into the workplace right out of high
school.
By the mid-1980’s, technology and a
global economy changed everything. Today,
in addition to occupational skills, the former
DAVEA — renamed Technology Center of
DuPage in 1998 — offers curricula aligned with
the Illinois Learning Standards in academics,
workplace skills, and career exploration.
Work-based learning experiences such as
job shadowing and internships help students
explore a career and add valuable experience
and references to their portfolios.
Addison Trail and Willowbrook are among
the 23 DuPage area high schools offering
TCD as an elective to juniors and seniors
2 hours a day, 5 days a week. Students
pay only a modest class fee; DuPage H.S.
District 88 covers the cost of tuition and bus
transportation.
For more information, contact the guidance
office or call TCD at 630-620-8770.
The TCD Mission:
Technology Center of
DuPage will provide an
educational environment
that supports and
encourages individual
learning styles, develops
occupational skills, fosters
professionalism, promotes
academic growth, and
assists students in
discovering their potential.
Among TCD’s
21 Programs:
Computer Information Systems
Electronics &
Pre-Engineering Technology
Cosmetology
Culinary, Pastry Arts
& Hospitality Management
Certified Nurse Assistant
Criminal Justice

Hat and Coat:
Reflections of a Photojournalist
Thursday, October 2, 7 pm
For Jerry Tomaselli and other SunTimes photographers, “hat and coat” was
the cryptic but unmistakable command to drop
whatever you were doing
and head to the scene of
a breaking story.
Jerry will share more
than 20 years of memories and the dramatic
photos behind them,
ranging from sports
to disasters, from light-hearted moments
to heart-rending tragedies. His lens has
captured compelling stories of the rich and
the famous along with the colorful but little
known denizens of Chicagoland.

USE YOUR HEAD, USE A HELMET.
What is a bike helmet
A helmet protects your brain when you fall. It has a
plastic shell on the outside and foam inside. It has a
strap to keep it on when you fly through the air. It only
covers your head, and the rest of your body is still
exposed. So you still have to be careful.
How does a helmet work?
The foam crushes when you hit the road. That cushions the blow, and usually saves
your brain. The shell makes it skid on the street so your neck does not get jerked.
The shell also keeps the foam in one piece. It can split when you hit the car and not
be there when you hit the street.
If the strap is not right, your helmet can slip to the side or to the back. Then your
bare head hits the road. Ouch. Pavement is very very hard.
Why wear one?
Being careful and not crashing is the best way. That’s better than crashing in a
helmet! The helmet only covers your head. So you need to learn the rules of the
road and how to ride with them. But even the best riders crash. If you hurt your
brain it can change you. You may not be able to read this page, or play video
games, or talk, or run, or tie you own shoes or even feed yourself.
Some people do not wear bike helmets. Don’t let that stop you. You need one when
you ride your bike. They do too, but they just don’t know it yet.
How do I pick one?
Find a helmet that fits you. That’s really the most important part. That will keep it
on your head while you fly through the air or over the handlebars. Work on the
straps to get the fit just right. You will probably need somebody to help you do that.
You don’t have to pay a lot for a good helmet. But be sure it fits you, you like it and
you will wear it.
Your helmet is good for only one bad crash. That damages the foam and you have
to replace it. So you can wear a
bike helmet to skate if you use
inline skates and don’t crash every
day. For skateboards where you do
crash a lot, you need a different
helmet that recovers after a crash.
Skateboard helmets have a sticker
inside that says ASTM F-1492.
Reprinted with permission from the
Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute
Your helmet should sit level on your
head, like in the third picture.

Village of Addison

From the Mayor’s Desk ...
W
e’ve all heard the adage
about how important first
impressions can be.
The impression a visitor
forms about our community
can determine whether they are
willing to move to Addison, or
spend their sales tax dollars here.
The Village Board and Staff
feel that billboards – and some of the ventures
advertised on them – can create a negative image
of the area in which they appear.
These billboards are not allowed within our
corporate limits, and as unincorporated properties
are annexed into the Village, we insist upon the
removal of them.
The Forest Preserve District of DuPage
County feels the same, and it was through their
efforts that the billboard east of Lake Street and
Villa Avenue was recently removed.
This was the 7th billboard to be removed in
our area since 1988.
The District purchased the property several
years ago, and sought to have the billboard
removed at the end of its lease. The billboard
company took the District to court to stop its
removal, and when they lost, offered the District a
substantial sum to keep it in place.
We appreciate that Forest Preserve District –
especially President Dewey Pierotti and District
1 representative Marsha Murphy – stood their
ground and supported Addison’s efforts to beautify
our community.
Respectfully,
Larry Hartwig
Mayor

Back to School Safety
When everyone starts storing away their
picnic tables, 4th of July napkins, sunscreen
and beach sandals, you know that school is
about to begin! Streets leading to schools
will no doubt be congested and the risk of
accidents will increase. As a proactive police department, officer
presence will be more abundant to enforce laws that were made to
reduce risk and/or injury. Some of these laws are:
• Parking Where Prohibited – No person shall stop or park a
vehicle on the roadway side of any other vehicle stopped or
parked at the edge or curb of a street (Double Parking) … or
any other place where signs prohibit (No Parking Zones & No
Drop Off Zones).
This law is extremely important since double parking usually contributes to traffic jams on or around school property. More importantly, drivers may not be able to stop in time when an individual
crosses the front of their vehicle.
• Improper Parking at Right-hand Curb – Every vehicle stopped
or parked on a roadway shall do so with the right-hand wheels
parallel to, and within 12 inches of the curb (Pulling up all the
way to the right-lane curb to let out children).
Children should never have to cross a lane of traffic after exiting a
vehicle. This poses a risk of being struck by a vehicle attempting
to pass.
• Blocking a Private Driveway – No person shall park a vehicle,
occupied or not, in front of a public or private driveway, or
within 15 feet of a fire hydrant.
Drivers should be courteous to homeowners attempting to enter/
exit their property.
• Approaching, overtaking, and passing a school bus – The driver
of a vehicle shall stop such vehicle before meeting or overtaking,
from either direction, any school bus stopped at any location
for the purpose of receiving or discharging pupils. The driver
of the vehicle shall not proceed until the school bus resumes
motion or the driver of the vehicle is signals by the school bus
driver to proceed or the visual signals are no longer actuated.
Drivers should be aware of their surroundings especially when a
school bus is present.
The aforementioned laws were developed to maintain a level of
safety and time-efficiency when dropping off children and picking
them up. Please heed extra caution when driving through school
zones. If you have or need additional information, please contact
the Addison Police Department Traffic Unit at 630-543-3080.

Curbside Inspection Program Aids Property Values
The Village of Addison has
initiated an inspection program to
ensure that every home is being
maintained to certain minimum
standards. This program will assist
in maintaining, if not increasing,
your property values.
An inspector from the Community Development Department
will visit all neighborhoods to
conduct a curbside inspection.
Each residence will be mailed a
notice a week or two prior to the
actual inspection.
Each residential property will
be inspected from the public rightof-way to verify that a required
level of maintenance and code
compliance is being achieved. The
inspector will only be on private
property to leave a notice of correction.
If maintenance issues are
observed, a notice of correction
will be left, typically at the front
door of the house. The notice will
identify deficiencies and the time
frame allowed to resolve them.
The typical issues will address
the maintenance and aesthetics of
each site, such as:
• Driveways, sidewalks, fences
and sheds must be kept in
proper repair.
• Grass should not grow higher
than six inches.
• Roofs, siding, window and
doors must be maintained so
that they are in good repair.
Outside storage and trailers
are not permitted in any front
yard.
• Unlicensed and non-operating
vehicles must be kept indoors;
all vehicles must be parked on
a hard surface.
• Trash containers, when not at
the curbside, must be kept indoors or at least 12 feet behind
the front of the house.
• Each house must have its address properly displayed with
4- to 12-inch high numbers,
having a contrasting color to
the background it is placed on,
and visible from the street.
In addition to the previous
listing, the following standards
are also required, but not until
May 1, 2009:
• Satellite dishes must be located at least 12 feet behind
the front of the house.
• Transmission lines attached to
a building must be concealed
in a conduit that matches the
surface it is located on, including satellite and cable TV and
telephone.
• Trees and shrubs must be
trimmed to remove all diseased or damaged growth.
• As a safety concern, all trees,
shrubs and bushes located
adjacent to a walkway or the
house must be trimmed so that
they are no higher than 4 feet
or that the lowest branch is
not less than 3 feet above the
adjacent ground level.
• Window air conditioners shall
not be located in any window
on the front of the house or on
the side of the house within 12
feet of the front wall.
The Village wishes to work
closely with all residents in maintaining their properties. However,
the staff must enforce a consistent
but fair policy throughout the
community.
Please remember that only
with your cooperation can property values be maintained, making
Addison a better place to live.
Questions may be directed
to Marge Nott in the Community Development Department,

A Bit of Addison History
According to Profiles Then and Now by Elmer Krage, a lifelong Addison
resident (1899 - 1988), there were quite a few self-propelled, steam-driven
threshing rigs in the area.
Most of the machines were 12 horsepower. They were very clumsy to
move; a man could walk much faster than the machines traveled.
Getting up steam in the morning required the engineer to start a fire around
4:30 a.m. He had to clean the flues and firebox, fill the oil and grease cups
and keep stoking the fire. When he had 60-80 pounds of steam, he blew the
whistle to let the countryside know that he was ready for another day.
Threshing from the field required a number of collecting wagons or hay
racks with sideboards which could be loaded by one man. If the bundles
had to be stacked on the wagon it required a pitcher and a stacker.
For a large machine, which could handle four wagons at one time
and had a long self-feeder elevator, it took 12 to 16 wagons to keep
the machine going at full capacity. Some crews threshed as many as
4,000 bushels of oats in a 14-hour day.
Feeding the crew was another huge chore. At around 9 a.m. they
had lunch — beer, cheese, sausage, bread and butter. Dinner was
at noon, and it was a substantial meal. Coffee time came at 3 p.m.,
and supper when they quit, usually at 7:30 or 8 p.m.
The ladies were glad when threshing was over, each vying with
neighbors in preparing a delectable meal. The meal played a prominent part in the attitude of the crew. Some scrimped on meals and
then had a hard time getting enough help the following year.

Village Bond Ratings Upgraded To ‘AA+’
Village’s Sound Financial Standing Cited
Recently, the Village of Addison was notified
that two bond rating agencies – Fitch Ratings and
Standard & Poor’s – have assigned the Village a
“AA+” rating.
This new rating from Standard & Poor’s, upgraded from “AA,” and reaffirmed rating from Fitch
will be applied to the Village’s issuance of $6.2 million general obligation corporate refunding bonds.
In reaffirming the rating it originally gave the
Village in June 2000, Fitch cited, “the village’s
growing economic base, sound financial position
and modest debt burden.”
Standard & Poor’s raised the rating based on
“good managerial practices that have helped the
village maintain very strong financial reserves.”
These bond ratings boosts will help the Village
gain more competitive interest rates, which saves
money in the long run, said Mayor Larry Hartwig.
“It also shows that our Board and Staff are
working in a fiscally responsible manner, which
is something we consider to be our top priority,”
Hartwig said.
The upcoming bond issue is to refinance those
issued in 1998 for the building of the Village Hall.
The refinance will save the Village approximately
$200,000 – of that, approximately $10,000 is due
to the new bond rating.

Digital TV Conversion
On Feb. 17, 2009, all full-power television stations will stop broadcasting in
analog format and will broadcast their
signals in digital format only. This is commonly known as
digital television, or DTV.
Residents who currently receive their over-the-air programming on an analog television using a broadcast receiver, either
set-top antenna or roof-top antenna, will need a digital-to-analog
converter box to continue watching broadcast television on
that television after Feb. 19, 2009.
These converter boxes will cost approximately $50 to $70
each and will be available in retail stores. Additionally, to
help defray the cost of the boxes, each household may request
two coupons, worth $40 each, to be used toward the purchase
of eligible digital-to-analog converter boxes. This coupon
program is being administered by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), and more
information can be found at www.dtv2009.gov or by calling

Art program coming to
Fullerton
Fullerton School art teacher, Camille Strode,
applied for and was awarded classroom materials
which she will use to implement the Picturing America
program with students in the fall.
Picturing America is a new initiative from the
National Endowment for the Humanities conducted in
cooperation with the American Library Association
which brings masterpieces of American art into classrooms and libraries across the nation.
As explained on their website, www.
picturingamerica.neh.gov, “The nation’s artistic
heritage—our paintings, sculpture, architecture, fine
crafts, and photography—offers unique insights into
the character, ideals, and aspirations of our country.
“By bringing high-quality reproductions of
notable American art into public and private
schools, libraries, and communities, Picturing
America gives participants the opportunity to learn
about our nation’s history and culture in a fresh and
engaging way. The program uses art as a catalyst
for the study of America—the cultural, political, and
historical threads woven into our nation’s fabric
over time.”
Strode will be receiving 24” x 36” laminated
reproductions of 40 works of art as well resource
material to help guide student discussion and appreciation of these art pieces.
Nilles honored for service
Carol Nilles was honored for her many years of
service as the President of the Addison Teachers
Association at the Board of Education meeting in May.
Nilles expressed gratitude for the positive relationships
that she has enjoyed with the Board, administrative
team and staff during her eight years leading the teachers group.
Dave Williams, Board of Education President,
thanked Nilles for her efforts in creating a good working
partnership between the Board and the ATA coming up
with ideas and compromises during the negotiations
process that work for the benefit of all .
Superintendent Don Hendricks remarked, “Carol
has been a pleasure to work with. As an association
president she is the best--always a professional and
always above board.”

Superintendent
The summer is coming to a peaceful end
for us at School District 4. It has been a very
exciting summer with renovation of the district
office to allow for much needed space. This
project should be completed by September. Our
District 4 summer school was very successful for
270 of our 1st - 7th grade students. And this
summer we housed the Addison Trail High School
summer school for 200 high school students. The
high school held their summer school at our junior
high school due to the summer construction/
renovation at the high school.
We have two new principals beginning this
fall. Robert Pape, formerly the Indian Trail Junior
High School Assistant Principal (and former Army
Trail Assistant Principal) will be the new principal
of Army Trail School. Mr. Pape knows the Army
Trail community well. Daniel Johnson will be the
new principal at Lincoln School. Mr. Johnson
comes to us from Des Plaines School District and
has good experiences that will be a great asset to
Lincoln School.
This fall we hope to have in place a before
and after school program at Army Trail School
operated by the Addison Park District. This will
be a pay as you participate program and should be
helpful to parents who need to drop off their child
early (by 6:00 a.m.) or pick-up their child late (by
6:00 p.m.). The program will be offered to all
District 4 parents and the Park District will
provide busing from Army Trail School to the
other schools in the morning. Please contact the
Addison Park District in August for more
information.
Enjoy the remainder of the summer!
Sincerely,
Dr. Donald Hendricks
Superintendent

Indian Trail. For parents who make a one-time
payment, the fee is $310. Those who choose
a six-month installment plan will pay $330.
Students involved in athletics, band ,
orchestra or choir will also be required to pay
a fee of $30 ($20 for 5th grade band/orchestra) in order to participate in these activities.
Many schools have established specific
date when registration materials can be turned
in to the schools. Please check the following
list for the dates and times that you can register
your students if you have not already done so.
All students new to the district, as well as those
entering kindergarten and sixth grade (unless we have a
5th grade physical on file), are required to present proof
of a recent physical exam and current immunization
record in order to attend classes in fall.

Students in 4th and 5th grade in all of District 4’s elementary
schools focused during the spring months on reading books that were
on a prescribed list of outside reading material.
Teams of students competed on the classroom level and on a
school-wide level, with the first place team from each school
progressing to a District-wide battle which was held at Army Trail
School in May. Each team was given the opportunity to earn points
by answering questions such as “In which book did a cat eat Kitty
Fritters?” (Skinnybones by Barbara Park) and “In which book is
there a secret hideout in the room above the garage?” (Changes for
Molly by Valerie Tripp). Teams were able to earn additional points by
correctly identifying the author of the book.
At the District Battle, Mr. Ruffie’s Army Trail students took
first place at the 4th grade level. Mrs. Infantino’s team from
Fullerton won the 5th grade competition.
The winning teams were recognized at the Board of Education
meeting on June 23, where Dr. Mary Ellen Reeves commented, “This
program has value in the individual effort required to
read the books as well as in the area of team work.
It’s so interesting to watch the students during
the competition as they discuss answers and
work to convince their teammates in order
to respond
with the right
answer.”
