SPANISH
ADDITIONAL
INFORMATION
Bachelor of Arts
The Department of World Languages is dedicated to equipping graduates of thsi
degree linguistically, culturally, and intellectually and for effective communication
in and about languages and literatures other than English in a pluralistic American
society and abroad.
The Spanish major is offered jointly through La Sierra University and the Adventist
Colleges Abroad (ACA) schools in Argentina and Spain. Students wishing to declare
the Spanish major must take the Spanish Placement Test administered by the
Department of World Languages. A year abroad (3 quarters or 2 semesters) is
required for all majors, except those who can give evidence of having completed
secondary school studies in their native Spanish-speaking country in Latin America
or Spain. For exact credit equivalencies from the ACA programs in Argentina or
Spain for the Spanish major, consult with the World Language Department.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES AND RELATED OCCUPATIONS: Graduates from this
department specialize in a wide range of employment. This would include business,
industry and commerce, civil service, education, law, library science, media, science,
health services, social work, religious work, social sciences, travel, tourism, and
teaching. Other career opportunities include consultant, diplomat, editor, and
translator.
EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: In addition to a B.A. degree, a graduate
degree in some other field is required for some of the above specialties. For
those wishing to teach English as a second language, a knowledge of a foreign
language is recommended in addition to teaching credentials.
JOB OUTLOOK: Employment of interpreters and translators is projected to grow
46 percent from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations.
Employment growth reflects increasing globalization and a more diverse U.S.
population, which is expected to require more interpreters and translators.
SALARY: The median annual wage for interpreters and translators was $45,430
in May 2012. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $23,570, and the top 10
percent earned more than $91,800.
