The Biosphere
The story so far ...
Biotic and abiotic factors interact in ecosystems. Ecosystems can be large (ocean) or small (water droplet). Biomes are the largest of the ecosystems. If we add up all the biomes we get our planetary system.

The Biosphere is composed of biomes. It is the part of the planet, including water, land and air, where life exists. It is very, very thin relative to the whole Earth.
Analogy ~ If the Earth were a beach ball, the biosphere would be sheet of plastic wrap laid over the surface, just one layer thick.
The Biosphere is made up of three parts
1. The Atmosphere
2. The Lithosphere
3. The Hydrosphere

The Atmosphere
The layer of gases that surrounds the Earth. Composed of • Ozone O3 which protects us from harmful UV (ultraviolet) radiation.
• Oxygen O2 which is needed by many organisms to breathe.
• Carbon Dioxide CO2 (needed by other organisms to breathe) and water vapour absorb sunlight and this heats up the atmosphere. (Greenhouse gases are not all bad).
As a habitat the atmosphere is more of a holding space for birds, insects and airborne microorganisms.

The Lithosphere The Lithosphere is the solid, outer layer of the Earth. The lithosphere extends 100 km down from the surface and runs under the continents and the oceans. It includes soil and is home to many micro organisms, plants, animals and fungi.
FYI ~ the radius of the Earth is 6370 km.

The Hydrosphere
The Hydrosphere is all the water on the Earth.
• 97 % of the Earth's water is salt water (oceans)
• 3 % of the Earth's water is fresh water (lakes, rivers, streams, glaciers, snow, rain etc.)
Of the 3 %, 20 % of the that is in Canada.
