Creating polls
Select the Create Poll button from the top left hand corner of the screen
(If you don’t see this, select Polls from the top menu bar first)
2. Type your question into the Poll question field. The response type options will appear:
o For open ended questions select the display type. I recommend ‘cluster’ ( you can
always change between display type whilst presenting the poll)
o For Multiple Choice questions (MCQ) type in the response options (Choose Add an
Answer if you need more).
o Tip: you can create an MCQ by typing the question and answers directly into the Poll
question field then pressing the Enter key, by using the following format:
 Question? Answer 1, answer 2, answer 3, answer 4, etc. For example:
1.
What’s your favourite colour? Red, blue, green, black
o
For MCQs with image responses, either
a) import images from your computer by either selecting the camera icon
or dragging and dropping images (Explorer 9 doesn’t support the latter), or
b) copy and paste the URL (web link) of an online image
o For Clickable Image questions, import an image file from your computer by selecting
the Upload an image to get started button.
3. Once you’ve entered all your questions select the Create button
Importing a list of questions from a document file
You can copy a list of questions from a document file and paste them directly into the Poll Question
field. Polleverywhere will automatically split the text into separate questions. Each question must be
on a separate line. For example, here is a multiple choice question followed by an open text
question:
What is your favourite colour? Red, blue, green, black, other
What is your favourite genre of music?

When you hover the cursor over the right hand side of the chart you ‘ll see these options:
Select this button to change the Visual settings e.g. colour scheme, chart type,
how free text responses are displayed, font size etc. You can also show and hide
the How to Respond information to free up screen space
When presenting from Fullscreen (see below) polls are automatically ‘pushed’ to
students using the web to respond. This button enables you to manually push/unpush the poll
Select this icon to show and hide poll results from students
Select this button to show and hide the correct answer, if one has been selected
(see Editing Polls section above)
Select this button to Lock and Unlock the poll. Previous responses are saved

previous poll buttons. Selecting next poll after presenting the last question in
your group of polls will return you to the first question in the group

Presenting polls to class using PowerPoint
Polleverywhere questions can be embedded and presented from a PowerPoint presentation. To do
this, you will first need to install a plug in (Mac and PC versions available). To download and install
on your own machine, go to http://www.polleverywhere.com/app/win . To install it onto a
university computer go to the self-service portal at http://software.surrey.ac.uk and launch the
Pollev presenter app. Once installed, open PowerPoint and do the following:
1.
Select the Polleverywhere tab at the top of the PowerPoint screen and login using your
Polleverywhere username and password:
2.
Select Insert Poll slide and select the questions you want to import. Holding down the SHIFT
key on your keyboard will enable you to select more than one question at a time
Select the Insert Selected Polls button to import each question as a separate slide into your
presentation.
4. The polls will appear when you enter PowerPoint’s Slide Show mode. Polls are automatically
pushed to web devices as you present each slide and you can also hover the cursor over to
the right hand side of the screen to change the display settings (see previous page).
5. Once inserted the placeholders can be resized, allowing you to add additional text or other
media to the PowerPoint slide

Setting a template poll
Polleverywhere allows you to set a default visual theme and question settings for the polls you
create. To do this:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
Create a new multiple choice question to use as the template poll. It doesn’t matter what
the question and answers are, e.g. you could just type in “Template poll? Answer 1, answer
2, answer 3, answer 4”
Edit the question parameters accordingly, e.g.
o Number of responses allowed = 1
o Response format set to A, B, C, etc.
Hover the cursor over the right hand side of the chart, select the Visual Settings button and
change the settings according to taste.
Select Settings from the top menu bar
Go to the Default poll setting section and select Template: Set
Choose the poll to use as the template from the drop down list then select the Update
profile button at the bottom of the screen. NB: repeat steps 5 and 6 if you change your
template and want to update existing polls with the new settings.
Creating reports
1.
From the Polls page, tick the box next to the questions you want to include in the report
2.
Select the Report button at the top of the screen
From the Select Report Type screen choose the report format you want to generate. The
most useful ones are Summary and Survey. NB: The summary version is neater in terms of
display but only shows you the number of open text question responses, not the responses
themselves. To get these, run the Survey report.
4. On the right hand side of the report screen you have various options, including changing the
report type, generating reports for the current run or all runs (if you’ve run the same poll
more than once) and downloading a .csv spreadsheet which you can import into Excel.
