WHAT IS A REPTILE?
Reptiles are very interesting animals. Various kinds of reptiles have
lived on earth for millions of years. There are about 6500 different
species, or kinds, of reptiles. Reptiles can be found on every continent
except Antarctica. Alligators, crocodiles, lizards, snakes, and turtles
are all reptiles.
Some reptiles live in desert areas and prefer hot, dry climates. Other
reptiles live in forests. Sea turtles, sea snakes, and marine iguanas can
spend their entire lives in the ocean.
Reptiles are cold-blooded animals. Their body temperatures change
according to the weather. They avoid extremely hot or cold weather.
Reptiles that live in cold climates will hibernate during the winter
months.
Reptiles have rough, scaly skin. They breathe with lungs. They are
vertebrate animals. This means they have backbones. Some reptiles
can live very long lives. Some turtles have lived in captivity for one
hundred years.
Some reptiles have poisonous venom that can hurt or even kill another
animal. Most reptiles are harmless and avoid any contact with larger
animals, including humans.
