Welcome!
Hello!
We are honoured and grateful to work together with
your school to share and learn new ideas.
Here at Almadina, we begin our Seasons Unit at the
beginning of the school year (in September).
Throughout this presentation, you will find
key objectives, art work, bulletin board displays and
cross-curricular activities.
In our email, we have attached templates of some of
these activities.
We hope you enjoy them!
Warm Regards,
Grade 1 Team

Overview
Students learn that changes in their environment occur in a regular pattern known as the seasons.
They explore weather change, and how the ups and downs of weather affect their own lives.
Looking beyond themselves and beyond the immediate weather, students are guided to discover
that there are larger patterns of change that affect the life habits of many living things. The
interactions among different parts of the environment, and the recurrence of change as part of a
cycle, are important science ideas that are introduced in this topic.
General Learner Expectations
Students will:
1–6 Describe seasonal changes, and interpret
the effects of seasonal changes on living things.
Specific Learner Expectations
Students will:
1. Describe the regular and predictable cycle of seasonal changes:
•
changes in sunlight
•
changes in weather.
2.Identify and describe examples of plant and animal changes that occur on a seasonal basis:
•
changes in form and appearance
•
changes in location of living things
changes in activity; e.g., students should recognize that many living things go into a dormant period during
winter and survive under a blanket of snow as a seed, egg or
hibernating animal• production of young on a seasonal basis.
3. Identify human preparations for seasonal change and identify activities that are done on a seasonal
basis.
4. Record observable seasonal changes over a period of time.

Fall Art - Scarecrows
Mrs. Tanya Pollett
Grade Ones explore the season, Fall, with Scarecrows. We completed a scarecrow pastel art and wrote about
scarecrows in our journals.

Title: Snowflake Coffee Filter Art.
Students learned how to mix and blend
colours together using
watercolour paint. They also learned
how each snowflake is unique, and cut
their snowflakes using different
patterns.

Snowmen at Night
Snowmen at Night.
Students first listened
to the story Snowmen
at Night By Caralyn
Buehner and then
created their own
addition problems.
Students started with
ten snowflakes and had
to add additional
snowflakes to the
number ten. 10 +

Fall Activity:
Fall Math Art – Students created their own math problem
by drawing a tree and cutting and gluing some Fall coloured
leaves on the tree and some on the ground. They then had
to fill in the blanks in their subtraction sentence using their
own picture (There were _____ leaves on the tree. ______
leaves fell off the tree. How many leaves are left?
_____+_____=______).
Mrs. Amy Kinsey
Seasons Art:
The students used sponge painting to illustrate the
changes of the tree (one season in each window pane).
They selected the correct colours for the leaves,
flowers and snow on the tree each season.
