Regular school attendance is very important if students
are to benefit from the educational opportunities the
school offers. Parents must be sure that their child attends school daily.
Students are considered a chronic truant if they are absent without valid cause 5% or more of school attendance days. Valid
causes for absence include illness, observance of a religious holiday,
death in the immediate family, and family emergencies.
Vacations during the school year are discouraged. Teachers are not
required to provide work to students who are away from school on
vacation. Absences such as these are considered unexcused absences.
Removing students from school before the school day ends is also not
encouraged. The state requires students to attend a specific number of
minutes each day. If a student is not in school for the required time,
they will be counted absent for either a half day or a whole day.
For example, 1st graders are considered 1/2 day absent if they come
to school after 9:30 or leave before1:20. 2nd and 3rd graders are considered 1/2 day absent if they come to school after 9:00 or leave before
2:20.
Students should arrive between 8:00 and 8:15.
School is in session from:
Mondays:
Grade 1-3:

REPORTING ABSENCES
Please call the school attendance line at (630) 260-6149 before school
on each day that your child is absent. You may call late the night before or early in the morning and leave a message. If the school has not
heard from you and your child is absent, you will receive a call at home
or at work to verify the absence.

TARDINESS
It is so very important to be on time for school. One of our
school rules is, “Be Here and Be Ready.” We expect students to
follow that rule and to be on time for school every day. Students are expected to arrive at school by 8:15am They are expected to be in their classroom and ready to learn by 8:20. Parents will be notified of excessive tardies.
Be Respectful
Be Here Be Ready
GENERAL SCHOOL PROCEDURES
Bicycles
Students may ride their bikes to school. Once they are on
school property they must get off their bikes and walk
them. Bikes are to be locked in the bike racks located outside the north doors. The school does not assume responsibility for
stolen or damaged bikes.
Toys, Games, Etc
No radios, toys, electronic games, or sports equipment may be brought
to school without permission from the child’s teacher.
Student sign in/sign out
Dress Code
It is important that children take pride in their appearance. And wear
clothing that does not district them or others during the school day.
The appropriateness of a student’s clothing is determined by the administrator. The following guidelines may be helpful.
A student who arrives to school late must obtain a pass from the
school office before going to class. If it is necessary to take your
child out of school early for any reason, a parent or responsible
adult needs to inform the school and come to the office to sign
out the child.

If your child will be late or
absent, please call
(630) 260-6149
before 9 am on the day of the
absence.
Clothing must cover the student from the shoulders to mid-thigh.
Clothing should not have advertisement for alcohol, tobacco or
other inappropriate products.
Hats and gloves are not to be worn in school.
Clothing should fit . Clothing that is too tight or too loose can be
a safety hazard or be a distraction in school.
Cold Weather Clothes
Even during cold weather, every effort is made to have students
spend some time outside in large motor activities. It is important that
your child be properly dressed with a warm coat, hat and gloves or
mittens. When the temperature or chill factor is below 20 degrees,
students do not go out for recess. If there is not an outside recess,
students will sometimes go outside for a short walk just to get some
fresh air.
Messages can be left on the attendance line 24 hours a day.

COOL TOOLS
Positive Behavioral Interventions and
Supports (PBIS)
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) is the behavior
support system that we use in our school. Schools are successful when
they help children grow academically, socially, physically, and emotionally. For this to happen, it is important that we have a safe environment
that is supportive and conducive to growth. By setting forth clear behavioral expectations and directly teaching students about these expectations, we can achieve the goal of creating an atmosphere that
encourages learning.
One of the most important parts of PBIS is that behavioral skills and expectations are taught directly to students. This way children know exactly what is expected of them and how they are to behave. We will
teach a lesson on targeted behaviors through our Cool Tools. These
are short lessons that reinforce behaviors that we feel need to be
reinforced, based on the needs of the students. During the first
week of school, all students are taught the expected behaviors in the
lunchroom, hallways, playground, bathroom, and in arrival and dismissal areas.
REWARDS SYSTEM
Positive Behavioral Interventions Support
Program
PBIS has 4 components:
• School Wide Behavior Expectations: a list of expectations for school wide behavior was developed.
• Cool Tools- Lesson plans used to teach students behavioral expectations
• Bee Bucks/Celebrations- a reward system
• Office Discipline Referral Forms (Majors & Minors) consequences
School Wide Behavior
Expectations
Bee Bucks: coupons will be awarded to students who demonstrate
the desired behaviors on a regular basis. All staff will give out Bee
Bucks. Children can save their Bee Bucks and redeem them for rewards once a month.
School Wide Celebrations:
Students will participate in a school wide celebration activity
designed to celebrate the positive choices that students have
made. These can be anything from a classroom activity, extra recess or an assembly. We will have some type of celebration each month.
DISCIPLINE REFERRALS
Pheasant Ridge students are expected to follow 3 short rules whenever
they are at school. They are:
BE SAFE.
BE RESPECTFUL.
BE HERE AND BE READY.
It is our goal to make sure that all of the children understand what it
means to be respectful, safe and ready in all areas of the school. We
have developed a matrix of specific expected behaviors that are to be
followed in all areas of the building. The complete matrix is sent home
to all families each fall.
Even with teaching children our expectations, offering reminders for
the expected behavior and positive reinforcements, misbehaviors,
though less frequent, will occur. For those instances, the Pheasant
Ridge staff, in line with the district behavior code, issues reminders or
referrals, which we refer to as minors and majors.
Teachers will try to manage all situations through regular classroom
management. When students do not respond to the classroom behavior program a teacher will then issue a minor. Minors are given
as reminders to students that they are still not meeting expectations.
Please note that the district’s Code Of Conduct is available in its entirety
on the district website: www.queenbee16.org.
7

PHEASANT RIDGE SCHOOL
Parents will receive a copy of any Minor that has been filled out.
At the end of the month we will collect all Minors and the students
can start fresh at the beginning of the following month. If a student
receives 3 Minors in one month then he/she will be referred to the
office for a Major.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Classroom Interruptions
Classroom interruptions are kept to a minimum to protect the learning
environment. Students will not be called to the office to pick up forgotten
items or answer phone calls. Messages will be delivered in emergency
situations only. Messages for teachers will be taken during school hours
and the teacher will return the call at her earliest opportunity. Arrangements for after school activities should be made before arrival at school.
There are certain serious behaviors that can result in an automatic
Major being issued from the office. These include but are not limited to: stealing, vandalism, weapons, threats, fighting, harassment,
illegal substances, defiance, and major disruption.
The office will call home when a Major has been issued. Majors
also include some type of consequence, which will be discussed
with the parent when a phone call is made.
Visitor Policy
Parents are welcome and encouraged to visit school. To make these visits
more meaningful you are asked to plan your visit at a time that is mutually
convenient for you and the teacher. When you arrive please check in at
the office.
We want to seek the help of all parents in keeping our school climate positive . It would be helpful if parents reinforced the PBIS
program at home by:
♦ reminding your child about the rules each day before they
leave for school.
♦ asking your child after school if they received any Bee Bucks
that day.
♦ helping your child to Be Here…Be Ready at the start of the day
by making sure that they are on time for school and are picked
up on time. Parents are a child’s best example. Remember
school starts at 8:20 and ends at 3:00
Homework
Homework is an important reinforcement tool at school. It helps students
develop independent work habits while giving them time to practice their
skills. It is expected that students will complete and submit quality homework. The amount of work varies with the grade level. If you have concerns about the amount of time your child is spending on homework,
please see the teacher. You can help your child by providing a consistent
time and a quiet place in which homework can be done.
Lunch Program
We have a hot lunch program at Pheasant Ridge. Parents are able to purchase lunches for their students or they can bring a healthy lunch from
home. Milk is also available. Please make sure that your child knows each
day whether he is bringing or purchasing his/her lunch everyday.

SCHOOL SAFETY AND SECURITY
School Security
The safety and security of children is a primary concern of the Pheasant
Ridge staff. For security reasons all exterior doors will be locked during
school hours. Visitors are asked to come to the main door and ring the
bell for admittance. Do not enter the building at any door other than the
main door. If you are late in dropping off your child you must drop them
off at the main doors.
Safety Drills
Pheasant Ridge has an emergency plan to help ensure the safety of the
children in the event of a fire, tornado, or building intruder. Fire drills,
tornado drills, and intruder alert drills are practiced throughout the year. If
a tornado warning is in effect at dismissal time, students will remain at
school under this condition until they may be safely dismissed or when a
parent comes to pick them up.
COMMUNICATION
Communication between the school and homes is very important.
You are encouraged to contact your child’s teachers or the principal if you have questions or concerns about your child. We have a
several other ways that we use to keep you informed of what is
going on here at school.
E-Mail
You may contact a teacher or a school staff member by e-mail if you
have a question or concern. All staff have the same e-mail format:
First initial and last name @ queenbee16.org
For example, John Doe would be jdoe @queenbee16.org.
Voice Mail
All staff now have voicemail accounts. Voicemail accounts can be
accessed when a call is received after school hours. During school
hours, messages will be taken by the office staff.
Report Cards are issued every nine weeks for third grade students, and every eighteen weeks for kindergarten, first and second
grade students. These reporting forms record academic progress
and effort in each area of the curriculum. Letter grades are assigned in academic areas in third grade only.
Parking Lot
It is for the safety of the students that we have parking lot procedures.
Therefore it is very important that you follow these procedures.
Morning Drop Off
Please follow the orange cones to drop off your child. Please do not drive
around the cones. Pull up to the sidewalk and let your child off as soon as
your car comes to a complete stop. Please do not wait until you are first in
line to let your child off. If you have business in the office, you may pull
up to the front and park.
Afternoon Pick Up
After morning arrival is complete, the parking lot is open for standard
parking. Once the lot fills during afternoon pick up, additional cars are
held on the street. As cars leave the lot, other cars will be let in. Cars that
are in a line on Stevenson Dr. to come into the lot should form a single
file line without blocking the driveways on Stevenson. Please be careful at
all times when pulling out of the lot.
Please note: Parents of Kindergarten and first grade students need to
come to the main doors to retrieve students at dismissal times.
11
Midterms are sent home in the middle of the quarter to those
third grade students who are in danger of not meeting standards.
Parent/Teacher Conferences are held twice a year, in the
fall and in the spring for all grade levels. This is a time when teachers share information with parents about their child’s progress in
school. The parent/teacher conference is a very important means
of reporting progress to parents. Parents are able to request individual conferences at any other time during the year.
Open House/Back To School Night is held in the beginning of September. This is a great opportunity to meet your child’s
teachers and to visit the school. You will be given important information about curriculum, grading practices, and general expectations. Unfortunately this is not a time for individual conferences.

Physical Exam Requirements
The School District has a web page that has a great deal of important information at www.queenbee16.org . School information, supply lists, and announcements are only a small sample of
what you will find there. You can also access the Pheasant Ridge
School web page from the district’s website or by navigating directly to www.pheasantridgeschool.org.
The State of Illinois requires that all students attending school meet
certain health standards. These include:
♦
Spanish Hotline
Queen Bee School District 16 is pleased to announce that we are
now able to provide an information hotline for our Spanish speaking families, in addition to the Spanish help that is available in each
school office. If you only speak Spanish and you need information
translated for you or if you have a question that you need answered in Spanish, please call (630) 344-5330 and leave your message. We will return your call within a few days with your information in Spanish or an answer to your question in Spanish.
This number is for information and your questions only. This is not
a number for you to call with an emergency or to call about your
child being absent. You would still need to contact your school
directly in these cases.

Medical: A physical examination and complete immunization
records are required to be on file in the school office for student
entering pre-k, early childhood, kindergarten and sixth grade.
This exam is to be conducted within one year prior to entering
these grades. Current physical/immunization records are required for all students transferring into Pheasant Ridge School.
Dental: Dental exams are required for students entering kindergarten, second grade and sixth grade. This exam must be completed by May 15, of the school year. Exams completed within
18 months will be accepted.
Vision: Vision exams are required for students entering kindergarten.
Accidents or Illness At School
If your child is injured or becomes ill in school basic first aid measures
will be followed. Parent/Guardians will be contacted if the injury or
illness is more serious. In case of severe emergencies the Glendale
Heights Paramedics will be called.
A child who has a fever (100 0 or higher), who is vomiting, has diarrhea, has an unidentified skin rash or has discharge from the eyes will
be sent home. If parents/guardians cannot be reached, the emergency
number listed on the enrollment form will be called . Please keep the
school updated with current home, work and emergency number.
Vision and Hearing Screening
All students at Pheasant Ridge School have their vision and hearing
screened during the school year. We screen new students and teacher
referrals. We will also screen a child if a parent requests it. Parents will
be notified if a child does not pass the screening.
Dental Programs
Our school, in cooperation with the DuPage County Health Department, offers a fluoride mouth rinse program to students in first, second
and third grades. Those students who have turned in a signed permission slip are given a fluoride solution to rinse with once a week. Volunteers are greatly appreciated for helping with the distribution of the

fluoride.
Important Notes
Our school also participates in the DuPage County Health Department’s Dental Sealant Program. All students who have turned in a
signed permission slip will receive a free dental exam. For those
who financially qualify, a cleaning and fluoride treatment will be
given and sealants will be applied if needed.
When to Keep Your Child Home
A child showing signs of illness should not come to school. This is
for the sick child’s benefit and for the protection of other children.
If your child is exhibiting any of these symptoms they should stay
home:
♦ Fever
♦ Vomiting
♦ Diarrhea,
♦ Unidentified skin rash
♦ Excessive discharge from the nose
♦ Uncontrolled bouts of coughing
♦ Known contagious disease ( strep throat, pinkeye, impetigo, etc)
A child displaying any of these symptoms should be kept home from
school until the symptoms have been gone for 24 hours, or until a
physician has examined the child and determined that the child can
return to school. You must have a doctor’s note to return to school
after 3 days absence for any illness.
Please call the school before 9:00am if your child will be staying
home. Our answering machine will take your calls 24 hours a day.
Administration of Medicine
Parents are encouraged to give medication during non-school hours
whenever possible. If, however, your child does need medication
during the school day, the following procedures must be followed.
A completed Medication Authorization Form must be on file in the
Nurse’s Office. These forms are available from the school secretary
or the nurse and may require a doctor’s signature. A form is needed
for both prescription and non-prescription medication.
Medication must be in the original bottle or box with the prescription label attached and parents must bring it to school. It is not to
be carried by the child.
