The Inside Scoop The Bravest of All One great personality, One beautiful smile, One unforeseen disease. As a survivor of Hurricane Katrina, Sweetpea gratefully found her way to Mackenzie’s and has spent the last five years enjoying the comforts of having a safe ‘home along the way.’ Sweetpea was always in good spirits with a huge smile on her face, ready to start a game of fetch, then trick you into keep-away instead! She was always in great health. Even in Mississippi, she was the only dog that looked as though she may be pregnant, but wasn’t... just a li!le on the healthier (heavier) side! In August of 2008, Sweetpea was surprisingly diagnosed with Lymphoma, a cancer disease of the lymphnodes. She was immediately started on a Chemotherapy protocol at MSU Oncology Department, and successfully went into remission on the seventeenth week of her twenty-five week treatment plan. Unfortunately, after this triumph, the cancer came out of remission and spread rapidly to her liver and spleen. MSU tried a rescue protocol which was only slightly effective at slowing the aggressive cancer. Due to her body’s resistance to all possible treatments, there were no other options that the doctors could provide. Sweetpea’s strength and bravery through this difficult fight will always be admired, and we are blessed to know she shared the last five happy years filled with love, friendship, and plenty of her favorite things…. toys, treats, people, and digging in her sandboxes. ~I n l o v i n g M e m o r y ~ 3 / 21 / 2000 - 1/20 /2009 A Day in the Life of a L EARNI NG Rescue dog Check out new dog videos and pictures at www.mackenzies.info TO C A R E! We are thrilled for the opportunity to provide informa"on about animal welfare. Especially to young people, empowering them to do something to make a difference in the lives of animals. Learning to care is learning to act! It’s important that we know how to help those we care about. This is especially true for kids. Even more than adults, children form an understanding of who they are based on what they do. When we show kids that they can help animals, they learn that they can make a real difference in the world. Match a strong sense of compassion with competence, and great things can happen - for animals and children alike. S t ay i n ’ w a r m a t t h e Po o l B u i l d i n g he mission of Mackenzie's Humane Education program is to assist in public youth education for the betterment of our present and future animal community. Currently, we are implementing a K-12 humane education curriculum which aligns with and enhances the current Michigan Merit Curriculum. Through this effort, we hope to accomplish two fundamental goals: advocate character education by promoting kindness, respect, and empathy for companion animals; and provide students with service learning opportunities. C haracter education is an important facet of school learning. We believe that caring, responsibility, respect for self and others, and a strong work ethic are core values that enable students to become compassionate and empathetic adults. As the largest no-kill dog Sanctuary in the Midwest, Mackenzie's is in a unique position to not only educate students about the plight of shelter animals, but to demonstrate how to truly respect and value the lives of all animal’s. One person can make a huge difference, no matter what their age.
