Year 10 Revision Guide 2017

Year 10 2017
Revision Strategies
Dear Year 10 Student
It is now three weeks to the start of your mock examinations, which is the culmination of 10 years of work. One of the keys
to success is to balance your workload between now and then.
We have asked your teachers about work that would be helpful for you to undertake over the Easter Holidays in their
subject area.
Some of this is revision and some work is focussed on supporting your controlled assessments. Please only select subjects
that you are studying. We hope you find the booklet helpful and the tailored work effective in supporting your revision.
You need to work out how long you have between now and the examinations. How are you going to effectively organise
your time to maximise your chances of success?
Of course the Easter holidays are about balance – work and relaxation.
If you need any further support do not hesitate to contact your teacher, who will be more than happy to help.
Yours sincerely
N Joynson

design task and section 2 is theory knowledge.
Combined the exam is worth 40% of the final GCSE and
coursework is worth 60%.
Students will need to research possible Marine life themes and smart &
modern/technical textiles. www.pinterest.com is a fantastic website for research
DESIGN SECTION OF THE EXAM WORTH 35/120 MARKS:

before the exam, this allows them to research and
prepare exactly what they are going to design in the
exam. The brief is below:
“Garments inspired by the theme of Marine Life.”
Before the exam students will need to have: fully researched the brief, produced x2
initial ideas and x1 final design to draw in the exam. (Remember students cannot
take these designs into the exam, they will have to draw them from memory).
Marks are given for: Choice of fabrics and components, Use of science and
technology, smart & modern textiles, Use of colour, Presentation, Quality of
annotation, Originality and quality of design and Decoration techniques.
THEORY SECTION OF THE EXAM WORTH 85/120 MARKS:

Where to revise – A quiet, warm, comfortable place with no distractions and with all
your stationery requirements, notes and revision guide to hand.
KNOW WHAT YOU NEED TO REVISE
The 3 topics that you need to revise are : River landscapes in the UK
 Glacial landscapes in the UK
 Urban issues and challenges
For each topic you have a checklist. Use this as a guide. Make sure you revise
everything on the checklist.
You should have your notes to revise from and a revision guide may also be useful.
Learn your case studies thoroughly (case study specific facts).
Practice skills (eg) O.S. mapskills / describing a photo / sketching and labelling / data
response / analysing data
REVISION TIPS
EXAM TECHNIQUE
Create a revision timetable.
Read your notes thoroughly.
Highlight key points / key words.
Look for sequences (put facts in the correct order).
Role Play (teach what you are revising to an imaginary class)
Create mind maps / revision cards / posters.
Make dominoes for your key vocabulary.
Maps from memory.
Apply your knowledge and skills by practicing exam questions.
(AQA GCSE geography – new specification – specimen exam papers and mark
schemes)
Your exam is 1 ½ hours long. You will do 3 questions with the total mark for the exam
being 90. That means it is approximately a mark a minute. When you practice the
exam questions think about the pace you work. Make sure you are working fast
enough to finish the paper.
Plan your answers to the longer (6 and 9 mark questions).
Read the questions carefully and make sure you are answering the question set.
Know the command words (eg) describe (say what you see), explain (give reasons).
Check your spelling, punctuation and grammar particularly with the longer 8 mark
answers and use connectives to link your points together.

Create a written timetable to include all of the topics
for the exam. You also need to plan where you will
revise; ideally it should be a quiet place away from any
distractions. Make sure you have everything you need
before you start your revisions. Make sure you plan
breaks into your revision sessions. Aim to spend 30-60

You will have 3 exams set by Edexcel. These are progress checking exams which will not count towards your final grade. You will need a pen,
pencil, ruler and calculator for each. You will need to learn any formula you have been taught in lessons.
To help you revise please make use of your exercise books, revision guides, materials on the VLE and your Active Learn software.
If you need any additional information please see your science teacher, Mr Powell, Mr Thompson or Mr Gregson

Year 10 Science Progress Assessment
Key questions and answers for the year 10 exam
What is the Year 10 exam?
A: It is a formal assessment to be sat by Year 10 students in May 2017. This will test content from the Edexcel specification that will have been
covered by students in Year 9/10. It will be sat on a specified day, in exam conditions, and will be marked by our GCSE examiners.
When are the exams?
A: In May 2017, before the summer exam series starts.
Biology 2nd May 2017
Chemistry
3Rd May 2017
Physics 4th May 2017
How do these results relate to the GCSE results?
A: These results are designed to help you understand how your students are progressing on the GCSE course, and identify where their strengths
and weaknesses are. They are not a guarantee of GCSE performance.
Will the year 10 exam result count towards a student final GCSE grade in 2018?
A: No. This is purely a formative assessment opportunity. We are choosing to move beyond just providing mock papers to running this as a
scheduled set of examinations as you indicated this would provide a motivating experience for students, as well as giving you confidence
through external marking.
How many papers will there be?
A: Each student will sit three papers: separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics papers. Tiered entry is available, so students can be entered for
Higher or Foundation.
How long will each paper be?
A: 1 hour long and 50 marks
What is a ventile result?
A: It is not possible to award students grades for this set of Edexcel year 10 exams in the same way as a GCSE. Instead, we will tell you where
your students fall in terms of the distribution of the cohort sitting them. Each student will receive their ventile score; a ventile being a position
across 19 ‘grade points’. These grade points will relate to the cumulative % of performance. The table below shows details how this may look.
