2A Lesson Plan: Division
Key Concepts: Sharing things equally is called dividing. In math we
use a division symbol that looks like ÷.
Suggested Materials: Manipulatives you would like to use with the
Student’s in order to utilize kinesthetic and visual teaching and
emphasize the ideas in the lesson.
Have a set of bags at a table and pre arrange a set of 20
cutouts/stickers.
First ask the students to count the number of stickers total and share
with them the idea that you are throwing a party this weekend for a
birthday, or holiday.
This weekend I am throwing a party for _____ and I need your
help preparing some parting gifts. What are your favorite gifts to
get at parties?
Candy, stickers, etc.
Well I really like getting stickers, so at my party I am going to
give out stickers. I am not sure how many I bought, can you help
me count them?
Individually separate the candy from the original pile while orally counting
with the children
Well we have 4 party bags here. To be fair, I want to make sure that
every bag gets the same amount of candy. We are going to share the
20 stickers between 4 different people, so we need to separate the
candy into 4 equal piles so no one is left out.
Let’s start by giving each bag one piece of candy and every bag after
that one piece of candy. After each bag has one piece of candy in it-

We just handed out four pieces of candy, let’s use all of the candy and
make sure that we have shared them all equally. Be sure to emphasize
the fact that the bags must remain equal.
So how many pieces of candy did each bag end up getting?
5 pieces of candy in each bag.
Okay, so we had 20 pieces of candy (Write 20)
And we shared those between 4 people (write ÷4) and we got (write =)
how many?
5
You’re right, so we can write 20 ÷ 4 = 5.
Slowly break this down with the kids and make sure that they are
understanding each part of the problem. Work several problems like
this.
Twenty divided into 4 equal groups is 5.
Take out more pieces of candy or cutouts and use them to do more sample
questions and create additional scenarios that will allow for the kids to learn
the process in a slow efficient manner that utilizes visual and kinesthetic
learning.
To assess whether the students have mastered the concept of dividing by
grouping, they will divide up a set of grapes in to 4 equal parts. While
students are working, the teacher will be circulating throughout the learning
area and monitoring student work. Teachers will ask guiding questions to
students who are stuck on a problem to help lead them to the answer.

Parent Email:
Today we practiced division by sharing items into groups. We pretended
we were planning a party for which we needed to prepare party bags, and
healthy snacks. We used division to figure out how many stickers would go
into each party bag and how many grapes would go each plate.
We used sticker and grape cut outs to help the children visualize dividing
the items into equal groups.
For example if we had 18 stickers and we shared them equally between the
three people in our group then everyone would get six stickers. So we
know 18 divided by 3 is 6.
We had fun working through the examples, and the children really got a
kick out of planning a party.
This week’s homework is.
Your Student’s behavior today was….
Sincerely,
x
