Captain Jim and I are so sorry we were unable to enjoy the end of
season cruise to Sucia Island as I have heard nothing but raves reviews.
You know what they say about boats: “…a hole in the water into which
you pour money”. Right now we are pouring money into a new transmission cooler! Many thanks to Greg and Vanessa Finch, with help from
Rob and Anne Hays, Claus and Turid Dassel, Chris and Darlene
Dailey, Murray and Val Laidley, Mike and Carol Silhan, Jon and
Debbie Galbraith, Dale and Kim Oldis, Ken and Susan Olsen, and
Lynn Ries and Rod Proctor for another memorable yacht club outing.
A total of 29 boats and 62 members enjoyed good food, beautiful sunsets,
and stories around the campfire.
Thanks to Linda Barrett, assisted by Past Commodores Alan and Janet Bargmeyer,
John and Judy Carr, Kirsten and Don Chandler, Bob and Pat Cushman, Wayne Fero
and Norma Seashore, Tom and Dee Ihrig, Roland and Nancy Miller, and Bill and
Jeanice Veselka, we were feted to a very delicious Italian dinner for our first Clubhouse
dinner of the Fall. The dinner was catered by La Traviata Restorante Italiano of La
Conner and featured chicken, veal, pasta and tiramisu. The evening was concluded with
a presentation by Gary and Cindy Ladd about their remarkable journey to the South
Pacific and beyond in their sailboat Distant Shores.
Your SBYC membership renewal notices will be going out this week. Please remember to
thoroughly review your contact information etc. If you would like to update your photo,
contact Rod Proctor and he will schedule a new photo session with you.
The next time someone asks you to volunteer to help with a dinner or a cruise, consider
this: “Individual commitment to a group – that is what makes a team work, a
company work, a society work, a civilization work.” (Vince Lombardi)
OCTOBER 2014—SHELTER BAY YACHT CLUB
www.shelterbayyachtclub.org
Vice Commodore—Chris Dailey
The nominating committee would like to present the following recommendation of candidates
for next year’s Board positions. Elections will be held at the October dinner meeting on
October 18th.
Rear Commodore – Jim Barrett
Jim retired from the University of Washington in 2001, after a long and
successful career as a department director in the health sciences, and now
enjoys his true love which is boating. Before meeting his wife Linda, Jim
lived on his 35’ Chris Craft “Part Two” and began its first of many remodels.
Jim is a past Commodore of Puget Sound Yacht Club in Seattle. Along with remodeling,
delivering, and captaining his and other boats, Jim has been Shelter Bay Yacht Club’s web
master. Jim always has a smile on his face and loves living in Shelter Bay with his wife
Linda in their waterfront home. To Jim life is supposed to be fun, why else would we be here!
Fleet Captain – Bud Myers
Boating has been part of Bud’s life starting as a kid with an 8’ pram and 10’ run-a-about
with 15HP; when he married Sue he built a 20’ run-a-bout. Many other boats filled the
intervening years until 1992 when Bud and Sue partnered with another couple to
commission “Able Too”, a 42’ General Marine Corporation yacht, which was built as a
handicap accessible boat that they put in charter for 7 years. This vessel has a wheelchair
hydraulic lift that Bud loves to show off! Bud states that having a boat in charter service
was not the most pleasant experience so they bought out their partners and now cruise on
Able Too as their private yacht, which they moor in Shelter Bay Marina. Along the way Bud
and Sue bought a fully restored 1965 Century Resorter and Bud has another wooden boat
project going. Bud and Sue have been very active cruising members of the club and have served as both port
host and dinner host many times.
Treasurer – Bob Cushman
Bob has been a boater since 1957. He held several rankings in the Coast Guard Auxiliary
during his 25 years of membership. Bob and Pat joined Shelter Bay Yacht Club in 2003.
They have been very active as both port hosts and monthly dinner hosts. Bob has served as
Shelter Bay Yacht Club Rear Commodore, Vice Commodore and Commodore from 2006 to
2008. Bob has an extensive background in running a hardware store and working for large
corporations in various production supervision and management positions. They are active
cruisers on the 37’ Californian power boat “Alexis Leigh”.
Trustee – Gary Ladd
Gary has been around boats his entire life, sailing on his Dads 31' Dutch sloop in the North
Sea out of Holland, racing a San Juan 24 in San Francisco and buying their first sailboat in
1983. Gary and Cindy sailed mostly around Commencement Bay but also in San Juans
and Lake Chelan before moving to SF Bay Area in 1998. They bought their current boat, a
Lafitte 44, “Distant Shores” which is a Robert Perry design and Taiwanese built cutter in
2003. After outfitting her they took off for blue water
cruising in 2008, finally returning in September 2013.
Gary and Cindy were members, for a year, at the Ballena
Bay Yacht Club in Alameda and retain membership with
Majuro Yacht Club in Marshall Islands as well as Musket
Cive YC in Fiji. Gary is looking forward to learning the ins and outs of the
yacht club as a trustee before stepping up to other positions of leadership
in the future!

From the Clubhouse—Murray Laidley, Rear Commodore
We are now into the fall dinner season after the very successful Taste of Italy clubhouse
dinner courtesy of Linda Barrett and the Past Commodores.
With our very successful new-member recruiting in 2014 and seeing increasing participation
in the club, I have a favor to ask of you. As is not uncommon in other clubs, the effort and
leadership falls on the capable shoulders of the few. We have what might be called "dinner
host burnout". On the bridge’s "agenda" for 2015 is to identify new owners for clubhouse
and cruise events. I have an almost complete list of hosts for 2015 and have asked each of
them to recruit strong "seconds" into their crews. So please volunteer, or expect a follow up
call in the near future to join a crew.
Now on to dining and dancing courtesy of Judy and John Bennett and their crew on October 18th. See the
attached flyer for all the details. Mark your calendars for the November 15th Greek dinner, hosted by Claus
and Turid Dassel and the Commodore’s Ball on December 13th, hosted by the McKeans and McFarlanes.

New Member Coordinator—Valerie Laidley
Shelter Bay Yacht Club has a new member. Here is our newest member to date. Look for
him at our next dinner and say hello to…
Chris Chambers, who has a 40 foot Grand Banks moored on F dock. Chris lives in Shelter
Bay, enjoys boating, tennis and golf. He is looking forward to cruising with the club and
attending club functions.
It was great to meet so many of the new members who have joined the club May and

From the Charthouse,
Pat McGarry—Fleet Captain
The Shelter Bay Yacht Club cruise
to Sucia Island was one that will
certainly be remembered. Those that
left on Tuesday had a great trip up
North while those of us that left on
Wednesday had stiff headwinds and
had to shorten our destination to
Anacortes overnight, which turned
out to be a fun evening. Then the
weather settled and everyone arrived in comfortable
fashion. Sucia Island truly showed herself to be the
“crown jewel” of the Washington State Marine Parks.
