Lesson Plans for 11-30-15

1 Lesson Plans for 11/30/15 Gamma 15 Psi You have been helping your students examine modern and archetypal representations of heroes, and your classes have read "The Power of Myth" and
The Iliad.
You want to develop a lesson that will lead students to connect/compare/contrast the hero in
The Iliad
(Achilles) to the only hero they know so far in
The Odyssey
(Telemachos) using "The Power of Myth" and perhaps their modern conceptions of the definition of a hero. Write lesson plans to achieve these objectives. Make sure to include
targets
,
activities
, and assignments
. Your lesson should be realistic. Remember you must develop any handouts you plan on using and post them to your wiki! 1. Targets a. I can identify the individual heroic traits of Achilles (The Iliad) and Telemachos (The Odyssey). b. I can connect, compare, and contrast Homer’s heroes Achilles and Telemachos. 2. Outline of Class a. Handouts i.
The Venn diagram worksheet and essay assignment sheet containing the rubric will be on the side table available for students to take before class begins. b. Recap: previous assignments and classwork i.
After discussing the heroic cycle on Wednesday, reading “The Power of Myth” Thursday night for homework, and having an informal discussion on the definition of a hero using the article on Friday, students have already been thinking about what they believe makes a hero. ii.
However, the teacher will briefly recap the previous class activities in class. The teacher will include the main arguments of dictionary definitions, the physical deed versus the spiritual deed, staying true to one’s morals and beliefs, sacrifice, and the heroic cycle, along with other examples (see teacher notes attached to the Venn diagram worksheet). iii.
Students will be able to fill in the first blank on the Venn diagram worksheet asking for the definition of a hero based on their formed opinions. c. Activities i.
Next, students will get into small groups for ten minutes to establish the individual heroic traits of Achilles and Telemachos using a Venn diagram. 2 Students will use information they know from the selections they read of The Iliad
and the first four books of
The Odyssey t
o complete this activity, as well as ideas developed during the discussion on Friday and previous discussions about the heroic cycle. Although the entire heroic cycle may not be useful to students for Telemachos, since students have not read all of
The Odyssey
, students can still use the cycle to complete the diagram for the beginnings of each epic if desired. ii.
After ten minutes, the teacher will allow students to write their responses on the Promethean board. There will be a copy of the Venn diagram worksheet in a flip chart on which students can write what they consider to be the individual heroic characteristics of Achilles and Telemachos. iii.
The class will also collectively note the distinct parallels in terms of similarities and differences between the two heroes. The teacher will complete the gaps in the students’ responses using the teacher notes. The teacher will not, however, show the students the answers on the Promethean board. Therefore, students can develop their own ideas. iv.
The teacher will introduce an essay prompt asking students to compare and contrast Achilles and Telemachos in terms of heroism. The teacher will read the assignment sheet and rubric containing the requirements for the essay to the class and answer any questions students might have about the assignment (see assignment sheet and rubric for details). 3. Assignments a. The first draft of the essay is due December 4 for peer review. The final essay will be due December 15 after additional peer workshops and revisions (see assignment sheet and rubric for details).
