Country Education Project Youth Ambassador
Jessie Azzopardi (year 11) has been selected as one of 19 students from around the state
representing rural schools to the Minister for Education as part of the Country Education Project.
She departs this weekend for the second forum. It is a great opportunity for her to be part of the
conversation about education at this level. I wish her all the best with her journey.
Friday attendance; Round Robin and Interschool Snow sports Championships
On Friday there are a variety of sporting events happening, with both the Round Robin sports competition and
also the Victorian Interschool Snow sports Championships occurring. As we did for the sports day in term 2,
we have entered teams in line with the expression of interest forms. Consequently, whilst there will be some
approved absences, the vast majority of the student cohort will be here at school participating in normal
classes. In particular, there are very few combined classes.
Please ensure your son/daughter attends school as normal on
Friday.
Honours Boards
It was with pleasure that I met with a selection of past students
last week.
Coordinated by Bruce Beecham, the group
presented us with a cheque to pay for the refurbishment and
update of our Honours Boards. This physical record of past
captains, vice captains and sports captains provides a tangible
link through the years, leading to great conversations about
the proud history of our college. Mel Challen and Ethan
Doyle were on hand to represent our current students and to
accept the cheque.
Book Week and Science Week
L-R: Ethan Doyle (School Captain), Tim Hall, Rose
The celebration of both Book Week and Science Week went Howe, Claire Beecham, Bruce Beecham, Dianne
well. In particular, the guest speakers organised by the Quick, Glenys Webb and Mel Challen (School
Science Week organising team (Tim Hume, Luke Fabris, Vice Captain)
Ethan Doyle, Aaron Annuscheit) were outstanding. They

came from a variety of Year 12 classes and spoke
to junior students about the science area that they
were passionate about.
Book week culminated with a ‘Mad Hatter’s Tea
Party’ on Friday, with staff and students requiring
at least a hat to participate. It was great to have
students participating in the competitions and to
see the enthusiasm for reading that was
generated. Well done to the library staff for their
organisation.
Pre-service Teachers
It is my pleasure to welcome the four pre-service
teachers working with us at the moment. All are
students studying for their Masters of Teaching
through the University of Melbourne. As a college,
we appreciate the opportunity to work with the next
generation of teachers as they bring an opportunity
to reflect on our teaching practise and to focus on
the essential skills of classroom management and
curriculum delivery. The mentor teachers we have
supporting them are all highly accomplished
practitioners. I am proud of the passion and skill of
our staff. The level of support they are willing to
provide at all levels is fantastic.

BOOK WEEK
What an exciting week we had
last week with a visit from
Grade One students from St
Marys’ Primary School - all
dressed up in their book week costumes (Mrs Dunstan was a ladybird and not a watermelon!)
Mr Thomson read the students a story and then the grade ones read Mr Thomson’s class the stories they
had written.
We had a couple of competitions which were won by Sarah Conway-Klusik, the price being a book
voucher for Country Tales book shop.
Friday saw us finish up with a Mad Hatters Tea Party. Miss Amanda Marshall, Mrs Bev Cios & Rachel
Noble all dressed up for the occasion, the food all had something to do with a book, and a good time was
had by all.

Every Monday during term time, from 12-1pm, a program
hits the airwaves from the studios of Radio Mansfield,
99.7FM.
The name of this program is “Mansfield Secondary
Media” (MSM) and it’s hosted by students who range from
year 7-11 and who have an interest in radio.
Over the eighteen months the program has been in
operation, students have presented segments which have
included interviews with the principal, teaching staff and
fellow students at the College on a variety of school based
events and activities. They’ve also questioned the Mayor,
got the latest from the Shire’s Youth Development Worker,
quizzed football coaches, listened to poets and musicians,
and covered aspects of life here in Mansfield and
discussed broader issues e.g. violence in films and
computer games, and the recent death and legacy of
comedian Robin Williams.
The responsibility for planning the hour long program and
music selection rests with each group of students who plan
together in the week prior to the programme. Should an
interview be required, students themselves make contact
with the intended interviewee.
Often students must
research background information. One of the highlights for
many students is occasionally having the opportunity to
view the latest films, courtesy of The Armchair Cinema
which generously offers tickets to MSM volunteers in
exchange for on-air film reviews.
In some cases students operate the studio panel and
computer, cue sponsorship announcements and music and
are even becoming quite proficient at knowing what to do
when things go wrong!
It is pleasing to see quite a group of our students coming
up with great ideas for programs and wanting to be
involved. Perhaps in the future we will hear the voices of
some of these students coming through our digital
radios, presenting programs for commercial stations
or even the ABC. Who knows? In the meantime,
tune into 99.7FM on Mondays between 12 -1 and
listen into Schools’ Radio – MSM.

Jake Murray hitting the target
Ben Garlick
The sun was shining and
for the first time in recent memory there was
no wind to contend with.
Despite the perfect conditions only Jake turned
in a good Round 1 score
hitting 8 out of 10
targets. Round 2 saw
everyone shoot that
little bit better with
Bailey stepping up
with 8 shots but Jake
had his eye in by
then and scored a
perfect 10 out of 10!
This placed Jake in
equal first position
overall with 7 other
shooters but unfortunately in the shoot
-offs, he missed a
couple of targets
and fell out of contention for a podium
finish. It was a great
effort to have come
so close, especially
considering
there
were over 200 students
competing
with some schools
bringing in buses as
their teams were so
big!
Once again our students have shown
they punch above
their weight in interschool competitions,
whatever the disciBailey Vogelzang
pline may be; equine, music, snow sports, cycling, swimming, athletics,
sport, science, maths, language, vocational, arts and
shooting!

State School Spectacular Update
GREAT NEWS!
The school is going to pay for us to travel to Melbourne on the 11th September! This means that students DO NOT
need to buy V- Line tickets. We will be travelling by bus from school at 7:00am .
Accommodation has been booked for our two nights in the big smoke and notes sent home. Students will need to
bring snacks and /or money for food. We are lucky that Melbourne Central is close by as well as cheap sushi!
A reminder to get your tickets for the show and make arrangements for the trip home on the 13 th September.
We are staring on the choreography this week, so it is all happening! Any questions?

Lloyd Spiegel Concert
Lloyd is an amazing blues/rhythm/jazz/rock guitarist who made a brief appearance
at a concert organised by Project 109 in 2013. He is returning to Mansfield for a full
concert this year as well as generously offering free workshops.
A wonderful opportunity for our numerous guitarists at MSC. A few of our senior
music students have been invited to perform at the evening concert.
Ticket details are on the flyer.

FRENCH EXCURSION
On Monday 18th August, a group of
Year 10, 11 and 12 students went to
the Swanpool Cinema to watch a
French movie called “Monsieur
Batignole”. They were accompanied
by French teacher Jocelyne Drysdale
and by parent Mr Glenn Andrews.
Some preparation work had been
done about the movie and World
War 2 the week before in class. After
the movie, the students sampled
some French food: Vichyssoise (a French soup), Brioche (a French pastry) and Confiserie (French
sweets). The food was expertly prepared by Kaye Roberts, one of our librarians.
There was an opportunity to speak French with Year 11 and 12 students from FCJ College (Benalla) and
with members of French conversation groups from the Swanpool and Benalla areas.
A big thank you to Glenn Andrews for driving, Peter Roberts for showing the movie, Kaye Roberts for the
food and to her helpers from the Swanpool Cinema.
A great morning was had by all.

Mon 18—22 August
It was great to see this initiative, in order to
recognise National Science Week.
The
students organised an assembly for yr 8-10
students, with a range of senior students
presenting information about the area of

science
that
they
were
passionate about. The panel
fielded questions about what
they were studying, why their
field was important, what was
the most interesting prac/
excursion that they had done,
and what were they intending to
do post-secondary school. The
depth of their understanding
was evident, and their passion
for
their
studies
was
inspirational.
The team organising the science
week celebrations have also
created a facebook page that
they are inviting interested
parties to 'like'. You need to
search for E=MSC2 in order to
find it.
I continue to be proud of our
students and the passion they
show for their learning.
