COUNTRY PROFILE – GRENADA
Location
The state of Grenada is made up of three main islands which are the most southerly
of the Windward Islands. The mainland, Grenada, is 21 miles long and 12 miles
wide, and is situated at 12 degrees latitude and 61 degrees longitude. The sister
island of Carriacou lies 23 miles north-east of Grenada and Petite Martinique is
located 2 miles off Carriacou. There are several other smaller off shore islands.
Area
The State of Grenada is a total of 133 square miles. The main island, Grenada is
120 square miles, sister isles, Carriacou, 13 square miles and Petite Martinique,
586 acres.

The population of Grenada is just over 100, 000.

The average year-round temperature is 27 degrees C.
History

Grenada became an Independent State within the British Commonwealth on 7
February, 1974. Originally inhabited by Arawaks and Caribs, Grenada was sighted
by Christopher Columbus during his third voyage in 1498. During the Colonial
wars of the 18th century, Grenada changed hands several times between the British
and the French, and was finally ceded to Britain in 1783.
The Political System
The political system is democracy based on the Westminster model, consisting of
the Head of State, the Legislature and the Executive. The Government is headed
by a Prime Minister supported by a Cabinet of Ministers, and is elected for a fiveyear term.

Accommodation
Grenada’s visitor accommodations includes Five Star all-inclusive resorts, Luxury
Hotels, Villas, Guesthouses and Holiday Cottages, to name a few. A 10 percent
VAT and 10 percent service charge is normal.
Communications
Maurice Bishop International Airport, previously, called Point Salines
International, is located at the Southern tip of the island and accommodates
commercial jets, as well as smaller Inter-island carriers. American Airlines,
American Eagle and Caribbean Airlines (now incorporating Air Jamaica) provides
nonstop services, as well as connecting services from the USA. Delta Airlines also

provides direct flights between Grenada and New York. Connecting services via
Caribbean Airlines are also available out of Canada. British Airways, Virgin
Atlantic and Monarch Airlines provide direct and connecting services out of
London. Condor provides winter services out of Germany; while there are various
summer charters out of Canada. LIAT and SVG Airlines provide Inter-Island
services, and Conviassa provides flights to Venezuela via Trinidad and the island
of Margarita.
Postal Information
The State of Grenada has access to efficient local, regional and International
mailing services, via the Grenada Postal Corporation. This is enhanced by courier
services offered by DHL, Federal Express and LIAT Quik Pak.
Telecommunications
International Direct-Dialing is available 24 hours per day, as well as cellular and
boat phones. LIME Grenada Ltd. (formerly Cable & Wireless) provides telecommunication services into and out of Grenada. Land lines are also available
from Columbus Communications (FLOW) Grenada; while Mobile services are
also provided by LIME and DIGICEL. Cable television is available throughout the
islands through the services of Columbus Communications (FLOW); while direct
TV is available, though not widespread. Grenada also boasts several FM/AM
Radio Stations.
Electricity
Electricity in Grenada is 220 Volts, alternating at 50 cycles per second.
Transformers will be required for appliances which do not accept 220 volts at 50
hertz. The Grenada Electricity Services Ltd (GRENLEC) is the sole provider of
electricity throughout the State.
Agriculture
Nutmegs and Mace, Cocoa and Bananas are Grenada’s traditional export Crops. In
addition, Grenada produces a wide range of spices, thus earning itself the name
‘Isle of Spice’. The island’s non-traditional Agriculture Sector has been considered
one of the most diversified in the Caribbean, producing a variety of vegetables,
root crops and fruits.
