How to take samples

Blood:
A special ki t is not requi red for fea ther samples. Any envelope or plasti c ba g will suffice. Envelopes a re preferred as they a re porous
and allow the sample to brea the and dry out. This reduces the chances of the samples going mouldy duri ng posta ge.
Label a small envelope or plasti c bag wi th the bi rd’s species and identifi ca tion. Copy tha t informa tion onto the form below.
Pluck (do not cut) 2 - 3 tail or wi ng feathers (NOT breast fea thers ).
Fea thers should be approxima tel y 4 - 10cm long. If the fea ther has bl ood on i t, take this single fea ther and allow i t to dry before
putting into an envelope or plas tic ba g.
Pla ce i n the labeled envel ope or plasti c bag and send them wi th a completed order form to the address below.
1. Use a blood sampling ki t.
2. Label one end of the blood ca rd wi th the bi rd’s species and identifi ca tion, and copy i t onto the form below.
3. Res train the bi rd wi th a fi rm but gentle hold. The medial meta ta rsal vein (leg) can be pri cked by a pin or needle and allow a drop of
blood to form, before touchi ng the drop to the labeled blood ca rd. Onl y one drop is requi red.
4. Clean thoroughl y or repla ce the pin between bi rds. Ensure the bleeding has s topped before returning the bi rd to i ts ca ge.
5. Allow the blood to dry for a t least 10 minutes before placing it into the plasti c bag.
6. Send the samples wi th a completed order form to the a ddress below.
