EXHAULTED RULER’S MESSAGE
Esteemed loyal knight
Robert Callan
After less than a month in this position some
things are becoming crystal clear. Primary in
this category is the importance of having a
strong, competent team to carry out the day
to day operations of this lodge. We are fortunate in our lodge to have such a team.
Kitty Vaars has done an outstanding job as
secretary and Elsie Durgin has come on
board as treasurer to give us a powerful team
in the office.
Kim West continues to set the bar high as
chair of the House committee and fills the
lodge with outside events that fund the financial needs of the lodge.
Joe Peters works quietly in the background
as bar manager to keep that vital service running smoothly.
Ollie Long, John Hecox, Carl Novak, Bud
West, and Bill Mueller work tirelessly in their
role as trustees, opening and closing the
lodge, keeping the grounds beautiful and the
building functioning etc.
Karen Long and Judy Hecox have been relentless in their kitchen and shopping endeavors. New people like Stephanie Sanders have
taken on roles to help with set-up and public
relations. And speaking of new people taking
on roles, how about Elaine Ashton taking on
the monumental task of the monthly bulletin!
David Vaars
I don’t know how many of you attended the
Easter Brunch but I did and boy, what a feast!
Chef Bill outdid himself. There was praise galore for his made to order omelets as well as
his homemade corned beef hash and scratch
made gravy. Everyone was raving. I believe
there were about 160+ in attendance and
that’s a lot of very happy people.
And then came the Installation dinner. A little
confusing as to the start time of the Installation
and dinner, — but all went really well. Again,
Chef Bill presented us with some of the best
Prime Rib and Halibut I’ve ever eaten.
Kim West has been booking us fairly steady,
with the Nevada Union Hall of Fame awards
and dinner for 300 people, the indoor yard
sale and so many other events.
The volunteers have been really putting in the
hours. Please call the lodge (530) 265-4920
and let us know when you’ll be available to
volunteer. We need your help and our volunteers could use a break. Steak night will be
back in swing next month. The crew there
could use a break too.
Our Elks family is growing
I am certain that I have left off many names
(Mike Blanton, Brent and Judy Schroeder
etc), but my point is that we are blessed with
many wonderful volunteers. Next time you
see one of these people,

Esteemed Loyal Knight — continued from front page

with 7 new members just in the last month.
Let’s encourage them to not only come and
enjoy the lodge and its functions, but to
pitch in and help. Remember, the best way
to encourage is by example.
Thank them. Better yet, offer to assist them
periodically and watch them smile. Join their
teams to help ensure the continuity of our
service.
We all stand on the shoulders of the many
Elks that have served before us and I am
proud to stand among this current crop of the
Best People On Earth .
As always, support all our first responders.
They are always there for us in our time of
need, and we need to show our support for
all their efforts.

Esteemed Leading Knight’s Message
Greetings from Kevin Fraser your new Leading Knight!
Most of you don’t know me, would not recognize me, and that’s no surprise as I am a newly adopted outsider. While I have indeed been an associate of lodge 518, I was a full member of Grass Valley 538, and
only recently moved over on a transfer demit. However I am not a stranger to 518.
In the past months as an associate I have cooked meals in the kitchen, reworked the Internet & WiFi systems, worked as Security at a large Western show (where we made some good coin – thank you Lou!).
There were many other minor things, but the most rewarding was bringingt in three new members to our
lodge in just the past few months -- with three more now submitting their applications. It’s a good start!
As Leading Knight I do not intend to simply sit out my term with a minimum of performance, but rather I
want to help our new Exalted Ruler, and the rest of our governing body, to really continue building a
strong lodge that will last well beyond our years.
Toward that end I have two personal goals in mind:
First is to boost membership. I hope to see another one hundred members. A strong membership equals
quality of enjoyment for all of us in our many ways of using the lodge. It helps ensure we can afford a chef,
a bartender, an air conditioner, parking lot lights and every other cost item. I have visited many lodges and
have seen plenty that struggle – or fold - because they didn’t make the efforts needed to bring in new
members. And, more members mean we can enjoy more lodge activities. I’d love to see us keep the lodge
open every evening, but we need enough participation to support nightly dinners, dances and more.
In the past year I have brought ten new members into various lodges, and did so simply by never forgetting
that I am an Elk, and sharing that with people in conversation. If each of you can bring us just one new
member in the year we will be a wonderfully successful lodge able to really bump-up our offerings to all
members. It’s easy to do, just remember who you are and share it with others you likely already know.
Tell them about us, bring them by for a drink and dinner some evening, let them learn and feel what it
means to be an Elk, and the selling part will handle itself. Just one new member!
I have a tool to help you with this.
Every morning I have the joy of waking up next to our new head of Public Relations – Stephanie Sanders.
Her job is to get the word out, in two directions. First to get the word out to the general public, about who
we are and what we do. That part is intuitive and makes sense. But secondly, her job is to get the word
out to you members so you can see what we are doing and how well we are communicating. You should
know how many times our name appeared in the public arena, and you should know how many outside
events we hosted, and how much charity efforts we shared, and much more. This knowledge is your tool
to explain to others what it means to be an Elk, and to encourage them to join our lodge. So look to see
Stephanie in print every month.

GETTING TO KNOW EACH OTHER
Many of you may already know Kevin Fraser is the guy who stepped up to the plate and filled the
vacant Leading Knight seat. Kevin has barely had time to take a deep breath and to jump into
the task at hand. Here’s his short Bio so you can know this dedicated man a little better. I want to
make this feature a regular one — particularly with regard to new members — transfers etc. I’m
gathering photos and brief biographies to this end. Hope you all think this is a good idea. Send
me photos and information you would like to see featured in the Bulletin — Elaine Ashton, Editor
A native of San Francisco, Kevin relocated to our area from
Marin County after buying a vacation home in Grass Valley and
then deciding it’s too nice here to not live here full time. After a
few years of hot summers along the McCourtney Road strip he
moved up to Banner Mountain. At 3300 feet and loves the higher elevation.
A career that began at age eleven included senior positions
working for David Rockefeller, PG&E, Ernst & Young and others. Past president of two 501©3 corporations as well as his
own corporation as an International Business Consultant with
clients in thirty-two countries, Kevin is now retired.
KEVIN FRASER — LEADING KNIGHT
Along the way life included seventeen years in various positions
as an elected official from Mayor to Fire Commissioner to Aviation Commissioner and more. Two grown sons have been a
true blessing. Kevin is extremely active in the ScottishAmerican community, so don’t be surprised to find him sporting
a kilt some night at the lodge.
WHAT DID THE FOLLOWING PEOPLE HAVE IN COMMON?
General Dwight D. Eisenhower, General Douglas MacArthur, General George S. Patton, General
John Pershing, Captain Eddie Rickenbacker, Warren G. Harding, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry
S. Truman, John F. Kennedy, Gerald R. Ford, Goodwin Knight, Barry Goldwater, William F.
Knowland, Tip O'Neill, Sam Rayburn, Richard Daley, Lawrence Welk, Jim Cramer, Jack Benny,
Andy Devine, Clint Eastwood, Gene Autry, William F. Cody, Donald O'Connor, Buster Keaton,
Irving Berlin, Harry Houdini, Vince Lombardi, Casey Stengel, Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford,
Babe Ruth, Francis Cardinal Spellman.
These individuals along with many other well known members of the military, politicians, business people, entertainers, sports
figures and other influential people in our country were/are all Elks. (Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks - Wikipedia)
The complementary April 22nd Prime Rib Night dinner was won by Edward Webster.

NOTES FROM THE HOUSE COMMITTEE
Happy Spring,—it's still busy at the lodge — Judy is showing the lodge for
weddings in 2017!
August is almost full with outside functions and we have a lot on the books for this
year already.
We want to schedule a clean up day at the lodge if the rain ever ends.
We are thinking of doing this on May 7th so please try to come down and help out
either in the yard or outside with the men starting at 9 am.
Please try to attend the Mothers Day Brunch. We served 93 at the Easter Brunch
so get your reservations in early. Flyer on Page 4
The Hoe Down will be on June 4th. If you have something you would like to donate for the Silent Auction or Raffle please call me. I've already been collecting
some great donations — Kim West
Kevin Fraser Leading Knight — Continued from page 5
My second main goal, as head of our Purple Pig effort, is to make this a wildly successful year for the
Purple Pig program, and that means bringing in money. Lots of it. It may be that over the years some
members have become so accustomed to that funny little pig they forget what it really means. When we
donate to a good cause we take it as given they will use the money wisely for whatever their worthy
cause may be: Veterans, Education etc., but we don’t really know exactly how the money is being used.
When we feed the pig we know exactly where the money goes because it is our prime charity as part of
the California Hawaii Elks Association. We are paying to employ dozens of professionals to provide critical services to disabled children. That takes a lot of money. Doctors are expensive, and care of this nature and on this scale is extremely expensive. The saying that “A Dime a Day” … helps a child walk and
talk is not just a slogan — it’s a fact..
But I want much more than a dime a day, and I am working toward some fundraising so we can really
make a difference. Meanwhile I encourage you all to bump it up a bit and remember why we are Elks,
and the motto of my station — Charity. Here is a link you can follow to refresh yourself on this wonderful project: https://chea-elks.org/major-project/purple-pig/
I want to close this first article with a huge thanks to all of you I have met so far. The support and encouragement I have received from so many lodge brothers at 518 has been overwhelming and 100% consistent. Staff, officers, members have all been uniformly amazing in cooperation and support, and I truly
appreciate that. Thanks all!

Nevada City Elks Ladies of 518
April 14, 2016 Minutes
A few minutes before our meeting started, ER Bob Callan was presented a $2043 check by Betty
Dalpez. It is our donation for CHIA. He thanked ladies for our generous donation.
The Elks Ladies of #518 meeting was called to order by President Nancy Novak. There were 21
members present plus one guest. The pledge of allegiance was recited by members followed by
birthday announcements. Nancy then congratulated Kriss Stillman for being awarded Elks Lady
of the Year. Judy Schroeder won the dinner drawing then donated it back to the Purple Pig.
Betty Dalpez read the upcoming events for next month. The minutes & treasurer’s report were
approved as printed. The Elks Yard Sale will be held on April 29 & 30. Nancy asked for volunteers to make baked goods (cookies, brownies, muffins, etc.) for the event. Please wrap or use
plastic bags for items so they will be ready for sale.
Committee Reports:
Call Girls: No memorials this past month.
Sunshine: Patty Hughes sent Easter cards to Martha Wasley & Dee Mautino. Dottie Van
Luchem indicated she will be having foot surgery on May 6th.
Unfinished Business: Kriss Stillman & Patty Hughes announced they will meet with Chamber of
Commerce regarding next year’s fair. Nancy will get a check to fair. We will be partnering with
the Grass Valley Chamber of Commerce to run our booth.
Nominations and election of officers was held with following results:
President Patty Hughes
Vice President Ann Smouse
Secretary Judy Schroeder
Treasurer Kriss Stillman
Parliamentarian Nancy Novak/Shari Roberts
Raffle Winners: Judy Schroeder, Letha Baker, Pam Auld, Millie Cantanesi (2) and Linda
Klever. Our next meeting will be held on May 12th. Dottie Van Luchem reminded ladies that
more raffle gifts are needed for next month’s raffle. Hope to see you
then.
Respectfully submitted,
Karen Long, Secretary

ELKS NATIONAL FOUNDATION
The fiscal year for the ENF ended on the last day of March. Soon, we will receive the final tally for our per capita donations for
the year. Our 2015-2016 year was fairly successful and we are now beginning a new fund raising period. For the past seven
years, we have not reached the levels of previous years, and this year was no exception; however, we did well in the northeast
district in total dollars contributed. Our per capita standing is in the lower half of the other lodges in our district.
Each year, the Foundation increases the amount of money it disburses, and the 2016 - 2017 year will have a disbursement of
close to $30 million split among its various recipients. This is a pretty good return considering that only about $7 million is donated nationwide to the ENF each year.
Even though the fiscal year for ENF ended on 31 March, the Grant year ends in July, and we will soon be applying for the Gratitude Grant in the amount of $2,500.
As always, we appreciate any donations, small or large. Please think about making a $10. or greater donation to the ENF for all
of its various projects. All contributions are welcome. If you have any questions, give me a call at 265-4408 or talk to me at
the lodge. Thanks. —Mike Blanton
