In the W03 Day 4 sheet on Iron, we saw that Iron / Steel are very important to our world.
Unfortunately iron and steel rust away fairly easily. Name three ways of stopping this.

The kitchen sink in your house is made of an alloy of steel. Why does this not rust away?

What is an “alloy”? an alloy is a mixture of different metals
Most drinks are packed in aluminium cans, plastic or glass bottles. Years ago, drinks
were packed in steel cans. Can you advance an argument for steel cans from an
environmental point of view?
Aluminium does not rust easily. Steel cans do. Left out in the weather steel cans would
eventually rust away.
We sometimes see rusty cars on our roads. Why are they a safety hazard?
If they are close to the road other cars might run into them.
How do you think we should deal with cars that are rusty?
They should be carted away and recycled.
Do you know of any examples where rust / corrosion has caused people to be hurt or
killed?
