Rental Enhancement vs. Rental Reimbursement Rental Car Enhancement United offers a unique coverage in our Preferred Auto Program entitled “Rental Car Enhancement”. This coverage if purchased provides many benefits to our customer while renting a vehicle. During the rental period if a covered loss occurs this coverage extends Comprehensive and Collision coverage to the rented vehicle. In addition to the direct damage to the rented vehicle this coverage also pays for additional charges the car rental company may collect such as “loss of use”, “administrative fees”, and “diminished value”. These coverages are not typically available without buying the “collision damage waiver” insurance directly from the car rental company. This “collision damage waiver” typically costs between $15‐$20 per rental day. For a one week rental the charges for this insurance purchased from the car rental company could reach $150.00 and more. United charges approximately $20.00 per 6 month policy term for this coverage. Rental Reimbursement This coverage is more typical and is offered by most auto insurance companies. It is an optional coverage and the coverage must be purchased on each vehicle for which coverage is desired. In the event of a covered loss to a vehicle that carries this “Rental Reimbursement” coverage, the insured is entitled to be reimbursed for the cost to rent a replacement vehicle while the insured vehicle is being repaired. This reimbursement benefit is subject to a daily maximum benefit of $30.00 and a total maximum benefit of $600.00 per claim. The cost for this coverage is approximately $10.00 per vehicle per policy term In short, Rental Reimbursement pays the cost to rent a vehicle to replace your damaged vehicle and Rental Car Enhancement insures the rental vehicle itself against damage.
