APRIL 2016
"Thoughts and Reflections..."
Easter’s over, so now what? That always seems to be how we look at
things in the church; we move from one big Sunday to the next big Sunday, forgetting what it is to live as Easter people with Easter hearts.
Easter hearts???? What is an Easter heart? An Easter heart is full of new
life; full of new mission; full of new possibilities. An Easter heart is willing
to try new things offering new signs of life to the world. An Easter heart
church leaves, “Well….we’ve always done it this way,” out of its vocabulary. An Easter heart church throws off the old grave clothes and becomes a blue jeans church, living its faith everyday wearing sturdy work
clothes that are made to get dirty.
Are you ready to put on your blue jeans and get dirty? Being the church
can get messy and being the church can be fun and joyful. I don’t know
about you, but the more I wear my jeans, the more comfortable they become and the more I love them. Let’s have Easter hearts and be a blue
jeans church!
Take off the old human nature with its practices and put on the new nature, which is renewed in knowledge by
conforming to the image of the one who created it. Colossians 3:9b-10, CEB

Henry Fork Service Center
UMW Circle #6 sponsored a Henry Fork Service Center mission project during February and
March. With your support and blessings, bathroom supplies and monetary donations were presented to Jessica Hunt of the Henry Fork Center on Sunday, March 13. The Staff and Children
of the Henry Fork Service Center thank you for your generosity.

Together We Can
As a congregation, we continue the backpack ministry with the
kindergarten children at GLH Johnson Elementary School. A
special thanks to J. C. Christner who delivers the backpacks to
GLH Johnson every Friday morning. God continues to answer
our prayers as you provide both the money and the service to
make this a wonderful mission of love.

St. Luke's Church Conference
On January 31, 2016 at 12:30 p.m. the congregation of St. Luke's UMC met to discuss and
decide whether or not to sell the church parsonage. District Superintendent, Rev. Janine
Howard, presided. Because Rev. Hannah owns her home here in Danville, she chose not to
live in the parsonage. This meant that the parsonage had to be sold or rented. St. Luke's
trustees made a recommendation to the church that the parsonage be sold. The following
points were clarified: (1) Money from the sale of the parsonage cannot be used by the
church, but the interest from the principal can be used. (2) The church must provide a parsonage for the pastor or a housing allowance.
The congregation voted to sell the parsonage. This was not a unanimous decision. The
trustees met in March and offered both Madeline Morris and Jimmy Gillie the option to act as
realtor. Madeline declined, so Jimmy will handle the real estate transaction. A work day to
improve curb appeal at the parsonage is scheduled for Saturday, April 2 at 9:00 a.m. Come
prepared to work and fellowship. (The work day has been postponed to a later date.)

Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity is forming a group to study the village proposed for the St. Luke's
property. If you are interested in the work that Habitat does, please contact Sherman
England about serving with this study group. It does not entail physical labor, but will
require your time. It would be beneficial to have someone from St. Luke's participate
with the group.

God invites us to join him where he is already at work in our
lives and the life of the church. By sharing our skills
(talents) we are saying thank you to God for his blessings.
Continue your prayers for St. Luke's and its ministries.
AGAPE SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS
The Agape Committee will be offering scholarships again this year. Applications are available in the narthex on the table outside the sanctuary doors. Please pick-up your application
form, fill it out, and return it to the Agape mailbox by April 24th.
After receiving the application forms, the Agape Committee will review them and determine if
a scholarship is awarded, and the amount of the scholarship. Letters will be sent our to recipients of these scholarships.
SUNDAY MORNING GREETERS
The greeters sign-up list for May and June is posted on the lighthouse. Please sign up for
this important St. Luke’s ministry. If you would like to serve as a greeter, and need further
information, please call Brenda Gregory at 434-836-0065.
SUNDAY MORNING REFRESHMENTS
We hope you have enjoyed the refreshments in the narthex on the third Sunday of each
month. The membership care committee is currently seeking volunteers for the months of
May - August. Refreshments need to be SIMPLE and should not require hours to prepare.
A sign-up sheet is on the lighthouse. Questions may be directed to Charlene Owen at 434793-1126.

Seeking Volunteers
Our list of ministry volunteers continues to be depleted. We need additional helpers during our Children’s Church time. Children’s Church operates on a rotating schedule, so that no one person misses
church very often. Please contact Lisa Thomasson if you are interested in either ministry opportunity.
Summer Mini Camps
We will once again be offering mini camps on Wednesdays for the children and youth. If you have a
special interest or talent that you would like to share please let Lisa know. Mini camp dates will be June
29th, July 13th, 20th, and 27th in the mornings.
“All God’s Children”

Fisher, Jimmy and Sissie Gillie, Stacy Goldean, Wendy Gonzalez, Davis and Brenda Gregory, Susan

NURSERY NEWS
We have a good problem in the nursery!
New toys show up in the nursery almost every week and I need your help in knowing if these were intended for donation, intended for another purpose, or just lost. I certainly don’t want to disrespect anyone’s property, but I also need to check any toys in the room for suitability for the youngest age group.
Additionally, the need for a good variety of toys must be balanced against the need to provide an orderly
space which is easily cleaned and which permits lots of room for children to move about. As new toys
come in, we want to evaluate whether there is adequate space for storage/display. Often, these toys can
replace older toys as long as I know they were intended for donation and not just left temporarily. Therefore, I am requesting the following:
1. If you would like to donate toys, please leave them boxed or bagged in the room with a note attached indicating they are donations. I will check them out as soon as possible! Just in case we
cannot use them, please indicate whether you want us to return the toys to you (in which case,
please leave contact information) or donate them to the next church-related yard sale. Thank you
for thinking of us for this donation!!
2. Our trainer has advised us that we should try to avoid keeping cloth toys and stuffed animals in
the room. Unlike a home environment, such toys may be handled or mouthed by several nursery
children, some of whom may have minor illnesses. While plastic toys can easily be wiped down,
cloth toys are more difficult to keep clean. Of course, children are welcome to bring their own
stuffed animals to play with while they are in the nursery.
3. If you think your child has left a toy in the room, please check the small “lost and found” bin on the
table to your left as you enter the room. When we find stray, unfamiliar toys which seem likely to
be left behind, they will be put in this bin and kept for up to a month. Also, if you think your child
may have left a toy elsewhere in the building, be aware that there is another lost and found in the
church office.
4. Because we have limited storage space, please do not leave items in the nursery which are for
other purposes. Such items are in danger of being discarded!
Thank you all so much for your commitment to our children!!

Fusion Retreat
We attended the Fusion District Youth Retreat! This
retreat was run by Wesley - the Methodist group on
Virginia Tech’s campus. While our trip was not without its bumps in the road, it was a learning experience for everyone. The theme of the weekend was
about how we are all created uniquely by God and
how we all have different gifts. We also participated
in a Stop Hunger Now food bagging event
(see the hair nets below!)

Service Project
We recently baked and delivered cookies to Roman Eagle staff as well as local firemen. The
firefighters were eager to tell us about what they do and show off their truck. Check out the
picture of Tatyana “driving” it!!
