July 17-20 San Juan River, NM
July 20- 24 South Fork, Colorado
Business Report by each Officer
1st VP of Fundraising; Beverly Gordon
fundraising@twff.net
At the San Gabriel Ou ng we raised $53 for Cas ng for
Recovery through fly sales and raffle cket sales for the
Sage Grace rod. We added over $200 to TWFF’s opera ng
budget from TWFF merchandise and silent auc on sales.
We will draw the winning raffle cket for the Sage Grace
rod at the Broken Bow ou ng on November 5. For those
of you who have bought a raffle cket so far, your chances
are great since these ckets sales have been few. If you are
looking for a beau ful 5wt, pink rod, pink fly line and pink
reel with a pink case, you have two more ou ngs le to
purchase a raffle cket.
We have several great items donated for the Broken
Bow Silent Ac on. Susan Maley, a brand new member
from Alaska, brought with her four very special Alaskan
items to donate. Two hand cra ed items by Na ve Americans, a birch basket and Walrus ivory earrings. Also a jar of
smoked sockeye salmon and a autographed
book, Rookie No More
by Pudge Kleinkauf, a
well known Alaska fly
fishing instructor. You
will not want to miss
this ou ng.
Also, mark your
calendars for August
27th. Sheila Anderson
and I will be represen ng TWFF at Cabela’s Fall Great Outdoor event in Buda. We will lead fly tying demonstra ons
and teachings from 10am to noon. Please come join us to
par cipate or assist.
How about another Swap Meet?
Since last year’s swap meet was such a success, we will do
it again at the Saltwater Ou ng October 1st. This is not a
fundraiser, but will be a fun exchange and an opportunity to clear space at home of items you no longer want for
something someone else brings that you can use. What is
no longer of use to you may be treasure to someone else!
Bring items that are in good condi on, fishing related or
not. Bring a sheet or a blanket to spread your items out on
the lawn for swapping.
Thanks to all who contribute support to Texas Women Fly
Fishers!

We had a small fundraiser at the San Gabriel ou ng with
a silent auc on and raised some money from CFR flies and
the Grace rod raffle and the sale of TWFF merchandise.
We had a smaller group of women but we had a lot of fun
fishing and ea ng and swapping fish stories.
Chris Johnson again did a great job and went above and
beyond to make sure we all had a good me and caught
some fish. Carol Olewin did an awesome job hos ng her
first ou ng.
The San Gabriel river didn’t disappoint and the park area
and water were just beau ful. We hope to host another
ou ng on the San Gabriel in the future.
We wanted to say Congratula on to Sharon and Lane on
their 27th wedding anniversary we are glad you both go
to spend some me on the water with us! We also want
to say Congratula ons to a Very Special Couple, Chris and
Emily Johnson who will be expec ng their first child in
December!
Hope to see everyone at the saltwater ou ng in September.
San Gabriel Ou ng in Georgetown Texas
by: Carol Olewin and Marilyn Young
The weather was great for the San Gabriel River
ou ng. It was a good introduc on to a summer a er a
somewhat long and rainy spring. We had a total of 19
members a ended the weekend event and fun was had
by all.
A ending were Beverly Gordon, Keira Quam, Jan and
Jesse Bates, Sharon and Lane Leissner, Kathleen Dockery, Kimberly Thurmond, Wanda Ga s, Karen Sullivan,
Susan Maley from Alaska, Janet and Emery Baca, Sheryl
Latham, LaJan Barnes, Marilyn Young, Carol Olewin, Julie
Sieh, Leslie DeHay and Emily Johnson.
Carol Olewin went fishing with Cole,a guide from Living
Waters on Thursday and caught 58 sunfish, long ear, red
breast, and Rio Grande cycliad. This gave us all something to be hopeful of catching on Friday and Saturday!
Chris Johnson, Living Waters Fly Shop was the guest speaker at the Friday night Mullet Mixer. He gave a slide show
presenta on on the San Gabriel River, and its fish. Saturday
he led a fishing clinic in the morning on the San Gabriel River
and in the a ernoon a fishing trip to Brushy Creek. I think
the fish take a nap around 3:00 pm on hot summer days.
Everyone had a treat Saturday night with pizza from 600 Degrees in Georgetown and cobbler and ice cream.
The North San Gabriel River was running too swi for wade
fishing , so the park in front of the headquarters was too high
and swi for fishing, but there were excellent spots on the
South San Gabriel and Brushy Creek in Round Rock. We had
quite a few ladies catching fish a er fish on the San Gabriel but not so much on Brushy Creek. Fishing along the San
Gabriel and Brushy Creek will be picking up this year as the
spring rains brought an end to the drought and the ease of
accessibility to the water.
Janet Baca and Keira Quam met up with several of the other ladies, Jan Bates, La Jan Barnes and Sheryl Lathamfrom the
club on Sunday and fished the San Gabriel
before heading back to the DFW area. On the way to the
parking lot Janet Baca caught a water snake while stripping in
a grasshopper fly in a pond. The snake caught us both by suprise! It was totally uninten onal, but Kiera Quam was ready
with a knife to cut the line and eventually the snake was able
to swim away with fly and ppet in tow.
Addi onal Ou ng Photo’s on pages 12-13.
2nd Annual Women’s Only
Kayak Bass Fishing Tournament
On Saturday, June 18th, we had several members of TWFF
that par cipated in the 2nd Annual Women’s Only Kayak Bass
Fishing Tournament at Lake Athens hosted by Mariner Sails.
The tournament has doubled in size from last year! We are
seeing more women ge ng involved in fishing these events
and that is great! All the money went to CfR that was raised
almost a thousand dollars.
Some of us fly fished the tournament and others used both
on the fly and conven onal rods to fish throughout the day. I
believe they had 11 out of 23, of the ladies catch a bass which
is really good. The winner of the whole tournament was a
young women from Aus n, Stevie Nicole Jones.
Stevie caught 4 bass totaling 85.5 inches, the next was Jordan Ogden with 8 bass totaling 77” the next was Sally Dolan 3
bass at 41.75” so the ladies that won caught some big bass .
Debbie Williams from TWFF took 4th place with 2 fish totaling
30.25”. Congratula ons to all the Winners!
I felt like a spectator at the tournament since the only two
bites and losses came early in the morning on poppers and
where lost trying to get them to the kayak. But that doesn’t
discourage me, I look forward to more learning next year at
the Women’s Only Kayak Bass Fishing Tournament.
2016 Saltwater Ou ng
Sargent Texas on East Matagorda Bay & Caney Creek
Friday September 30 - Saturday October 1
Fishing for:
Speckled Trout, Redfish, & Flounder to name a few. Other species may be caught including Sheepshead, Black Drum,
Sand Trout, Croaker, Lady Fish, and Triple Tail.
Ou ng Coordinators: Kate Allen, Mary Roher and Peggy Carl.
To Reserve a house contact Caney Y Realty and men on the TWFF so they can process the paperwork correctly.
A er the house has been leased by a member of TWFF all others will be booking the addi onal rooms for that house
through that member of the club, not Caney Y Realty! All money is due up front to the TWFF individual who orginally
leased the property in advance of the ou ng date. Please look at the break down per house, per person for what your
cost will be upfront.
Accommoda ons:
Vaca on Rental Houses are all located on the water with private piers for night fishing. There is one small motel in Sargent, “Fish Tale Inn”. Two RV hookups are available at our loca on close to TWFF ac vi es, and there are several RV Parks nearby.
Mullet Mixer to be held at the “Pelican Point” Friday Night.
Guides:
There are many Guides in the area who fish using conven onal tackle.
Though they do not fly fish themselves, a few of those are willing to
take Fly Fishers to areas they think are produc ve for fly fishing.
There are a fewer number of fly fishing guides familiar with the area.
We will follow up with more details and Guide contacts soon.
Not for the purist maybe, but I’ve had fun fishing with Captain Gene
when I’m on the fly and he’s using conven onal ar ficials. He may
start catching fish seemingly calling them up, then I start catching!
Caught both trout and redfish that way.
Different fishing opportuni es located close by to try!
Night Fishing from the piers
This o en is the most produc ve fishing and always fun. For over 50 years Sargent has been known for fishing Caney
Creek and there are many homes on the creek built for that specific purpose. Pier fishing accommodates all people
especially if you are not so inclined to jump in a kayak or wade fish. All piers managed by Caney Y Realty have fishing
lights, Cleaning Table, Live wells and fresh water hoses available. We have 5 houses on the creek all close to where our
TWFF stuff is happening including, “Pelican Point”, “Pelican Reef”, “Bay House”, “Sunset House” & “Fishin’ House”.
Kayak Fishing in the Cut and in the Bay:
Sargent is a great area for Kayak fishing. If you prefer to remain independent,
you can launch your Kayak from your house and start fishing immediately &
paddle & fish your way out into the cut and into the Bay. We will be organizing kayak ferrying as well to get kayak fly fishers & waders into lucra ve
shallow water areas on the south shoreline of the bay to targe ng Redfish
Flounder and Speckled Trout.
Wading:
Wade fishing is also produc ve especially on the South shoreline. Again we’re targe ng Redfish, Speckled Trout &
Flounder. You’ll need good wide saltwater wading boots to maneuver across so muddy areas when necessary where
the fish may be hi ng, or crossing li le inlets along the shoreline. You also could be nego a ng an oyster bar or two.
Main thing is to have a tough bo om, no open toes or water shoes that will pull off in the mud. Always be mindful of
S ng Rays and prac ce the s ngray shuffle and /or wear s ngray chaps. Long pants are the name of the game to protect from any poten al jellyfish s ngs.
The guys were catching speckled trout on Corky’swhen I caught this Sheepshead on a corona Crab. So Much Fun!
Surf Fishing:
Fishing Sargent Beach surf is an op on that as always, depends on the condi on of the water. Fall is usually the best
me to fish it, and we’re hoping by then the flooding will be behind us and the beaches will be easily passable a er
the trees and flood debris from the rivers has se led in and becomes part of the landscape. I’ve had success and lots
of fun catching Speckled Trout and Lady Fish in the surf with my fly rod. We recommend two houses on the beach for
fly fishing beach lovers; “Round House” & “Coastal Escape”. Each house provides the opportunity to also fish the ICW
side. Coastal Escape has Fishing Lights for night fishing.

Saltwater Gear for this ou ng:
8 weight Rods and reels with 8 weight line.
(7 will also work, however we’ve found 8 to be just right for us)
9 12 lb leader
12 lb ppet ( 1X )
Good wading boots for poten al Oysters and mucky mud.
S ng ray chaps if you plan to wade, (Always do the s ng ray shuffle)
Wading Belts
Good clippers
Large wading Landing Net
Large Saltwater foreceps
Long fishing pants or waders in case we have jelly fish
Fishing Gloves
Lots of cover and sun protec on of course.
** The Texas Women Fly Fisher’s have limited Saltwater 8wt rods and reels available for loan, but you will need to let
the ou ng coordinator know when you RSVP for this ou ng that you need to reserve one. You CAN NOT use your fresh
water fly fishing equipment for this type of saltwater fishing. There are saltwater reels and fly line specificlly made
for “SALTWATER” and if you use your fresh water equipment it will ruin your fly line and your reel! Also your regular
wading boots that are used for trout fishing ARE NOT the wading boots in the gear listed above. If you have an expensive pair of SIMM’s or other wading boot you do not want to saltwater wade in them! You can pick a cheaper pair of
saltwater wading boots at Academy for around $40 - $50 that can be used instead. Also remember you don’t have to
buy every thing on this list to fish this ou ng it is a “Suggested Gear List”!
*Remember this is salt water and you’ll want to wash EVERYTHING off every me you use it when your done.
Flies we have had success with include:
• Saltwater Clousers
• Crazy Charlies – Heavier for piers, weedless for wading & kayak fishing
• Crab imita ons – Heavier for piers, weedless for wading & kayak fishing
• Shrimp imita ons
• Crab/shrimp combo imita ons
My favorites over the last year have been the Corona Crab and Chartreuse Clouser.
Techniques to prepare for:
Cas ng - Remember we’re on the coast so you’ll want to be able to cast in the wind, and you’ll want to be able to cast
some distance; at least 50–75 . For me that means I have to double haul. It also helps to have your back cast be as
good as your forward cast. O en the posi on you’re in on the pier, wading or kayaking, may require you to back cast
to where the fish are.
Sargent waters including Caney Creek, East Matagorda Bay, the Intracoastal Waterway and the Gulf surf tend to be “off
color”. O en in the Fall they are not quite so off color depending on the wind pa erns and the amount of rain we have.
However, blind cas ng is more typical than not. You’ll certainly see evidence of fish by way of birds working, water
disturbances and bait working, but a clear view of the fish before you hook it, is truly a special and memorable experience!
Gene and I have lived and fished in Sargent for 24 years, and now we make our
living here. Captain Gene has “Living Waters Guide Service”, (Yes. I know it sounds
familiar! The waters we fish are different from Chris Johnson, however the source
of our living water we believe is the same in heart!). Captain Gene has been
guiding conven onal inshore saltwater fishing trips in East Matagorda Bay full
me since 2007. I have Owned & managed Caney Y Vaca on Rentals in Sargent
since 2001 and I’ve been Selling Real Estate since 2009. In 2012 I became “Caney
Y Realty”. We are living our “dream” in Sargent, and we are looking forward to
sharing it with TWFF this year!
**When RSVPing for this ou ng please include the following informa on
in the e-mail, if you are bringing a guest please repeat the info for that person.

Accommoda ons
These houses are all in good loca ons for access to fishing, and close to the TWFF ac vi es. Please see each
property listed below with the rate per person for TWO nights if the # of people listed for each house are sharing the cost equally. I determined the # of people by assuming nobody wants to share a bed unless it’s a King,
and nobody wants to sleep on a sofa bed. For every King I counted two. All Queen, Full and twins I counted
one.
THIS PRICE BREAKDOWN IS FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE IN PLANNING.
CANEY Y REALTY WILL REQUIRE ONE PERSON TO HANDLE BOOKING ANY ONE HOUSE.

The average water temperature— 42°-45°— is cold and makes trout consistently he y with an amazing year '
round food chain of aqua c insects on which to feed.
Nymphing is great throughout the year, with dries most consistent in late summer and early fall. Fishing terres
trials is also cap va ng in summer & fall.
To fish the famed San Juan, we recommend an 8 1/2 -9 foot fly rod with 5- or 6-weight floa ng line, breathable
chest waders, wading belt, wading staff, buff and wading boots.
Staying hydrated, wearing sunscreen and a hat of some type is recommended every day of the year. Bug spray
is also good to have to protect you from bi ng flies and mosquitoes.
