ing grid. The a achment device shall have the capacity of suppor ng 100 % of the ligh ng fixture weight ac ng in any direc on. Shall be a ached to the ceiling system with a posi ve clamping device that complete‐
ly surrounds the suppor ng members. Safety wires shall be a ached between the clamping device and the adjacent ceiling hanger or to the structure above. In no case shall the fixture exceed the design carrying capacity of the suppor ng members. Provide 1ea safety wire to the fixture housing Fixtures 10# > 56# Provide 2ea safety wires to the fixture housing Fixtures > 56# Shall be independently supported from the structure above by approved hangers Surface‐mounted ligh ng fixtures 2010 & 2013 California Building Code Requirements ‐ Seismic Design Category C (Ip=1.5) and D, E and F (Ip=All) All Surface‐mounted ligh ng fixtures Fixtures < 56# Fixtures > 56# A minimum of two a achment devices are required to secure each fixture to the ceiling grid. The a achment device shall have the capacity of suppor ng 100 % of the ligh ng fixture weight ac ng in any direc on. Shall be a ached to the ceiling system with a posi ve clamping devices made of material with a minimum of 14g that completely surrounds the suppor ng members. Rota onal spring catches do not comply. Safety wires shall be a ached between the clamping device and the adjacent ceiling hanger or to the structure above. In no case shall the fixture exceed the design carrying capacity of the suppor ng members. Provide addi onal supports when the light fixture exceeds 8’. Provide 2ea safety wires to the fixture housing at diagonal corners Must be independently supported from the structure by a minimum of 4ea direct supports to structure designed with a 4:1 safety factor. All lightweight miscellaneous devices, such as strobe lights, speakers, etc. 10# > 20# Provide 1ea safety wire to the fixture housing Misc. Devices > 20# Provide 2ea safety wires to the fixture housing at diagonal corners GN‐2 R20141103 SUPPORT REQUIREMENTS FOR PENDANT MOUNTED LIGHT FIXTURES 2010 & 2013 California Building Code and 2012 Interna onal Building Code1 Seismic Design Category C D, E & F Ip2 Support and Restraint Requirements >1.0 ≥ 1.0 Light fixtures, lighted signs and ceiling fans are not required to sa sfy the seis‐
mic force requirements as long as the following criteria are met: The fixtures have been engineered to accommodate loads equal to 1.4 mes the fixture weight ac ng simultaneously in the ver cal and hori‐
zontal direc on and applied at the point of support. Fixtures are free to swing 45° in all direc ons and not cause damaging im‐
pact to themselves or surrounding u li es. Where impact could po‐
ten ally occur, fixtures must be “Sway Braced”. The connec on to the structure shall allow a 360° range of mo on in the horizontal plane. Fixtures supported by hollow rods, or other support mechanisms shall be pro‐
vided with a “safety cable” a ached directly to the fixture and directly to com‐
petent suppor ng structure above. The safety cable, its connec ons, and sup‐
ports shall be designed to support a load of at least 1.4 mes the weight of the fixture ac ng simultaneously in the ver cal and horizontal direc on and ap‐
plied at the point of lateral support. 1 – Requirements are per ASCE7‐10 13.6.1 2 – Ip refers to importance factor of the component.
