Spectrum Connection February 2015 FROM THE DESK OF DAVE Issue 71 SMALLEY February 10th 1992 That is the day that Spectrum, well, became Spectrum! While that was 23 years ago, I can tell you that it seems like just yesterday. I cannot fathom how that many years has gone by so fast! Founder | CEO Over the course of time we have made a lot of friends and enjoyed victories and triumphs too numerous to mention. We have toiled and grinded through some improbable situations, but most of all we have laughed. In fact, we continue to laugh and continue to have a great time. We work with some of the very best people in the whole wide world. I sure am proud of every one of you that have contributed to this journey. Our opportunities in front of us are bountiful. Our journey is on a wide open highway that knows no bounds. We can only be limited if we allow ourselves to limit ourselves. If we keep our foot on the gas (or as some say, keeping the hammer down) and keeping customer service JOB 1 every moment of every day, there are no limits, no boundaries to where we can go. As we hurtle towards our silver anniversary I am reminded of how fast time goes by. The facts are we have but 2 years, or 24 months, or more importantly just over 700 daily opportunities to not only do something GREAT, but to advance ourselves and to make Spectrum an even greater company. In trying to improve myself, I believe that one of the most effective ways to grow as a person and as a professional is to improve how I communicate. And by communicating, I do not mean just how I speak or how I get my message across. Listening is equally if not more important. Recently I have been reading and studying a book called The Anatomy of Peace: Resolving the Heart of Conflict. It is a book that I highly recommend reading. Many books that are discussed in a business forum come to the reader from a business perspective and can be translated into our personal or daily life situations. The Anatomy of Peace has helped me ‘hear’ and ‘listen’ in a different way than I have in the past. It has shown me ways to stop the circle of conflict in a disagreement, instead opening a path to an amicable solution. It shares a concept called ‘a heart at peace’ and conversely ‘a heart at war’, which of course we are always best off seeking that place where we are a heart at peace. I can easily say that taken to heart, this book can improve each and every one of us as a person. If you are around the office, there are a dozen or so copies in the library. If you do not have access to the library, just email me and I will send a copy to you. I am confident that you share my goal of continually working to be a better person. So in closing, Cheers to our 23rd Anniversary and to many more to come. My best to you and yours. Most sincerely, - Dave Page 1 FROM THE DESK OF MELANIE President Relationships matter. Pretty simple. How many relationships are you in on a day to day basis? If you break it down, I’ll bet it’s a lot! From marriages and partners, to children, parents, siblings, friends, associates, vendors and I’m sure many, many more. Can you imagine life without relationships? Sounds pretty lonely to me. Relationships on any scale take work, committed work. Relationships are generally a two - way street and most of the time have equal give and take. Committed relationships seemingly can sometimes be the most challenging, yet certainly the most rewarding. When you’ve got both feet in it seems you’re less likely to give up... no turning around, no giving in. PARKER growth. You cannot replace time spent building a relationship that is backed up with the “I’m All In” commitment. The more personal and longer lasting the relationship, the more trust is developed over time, and the foundation can continue to be built upon. The ways in which we treat our customers and how we catch the unexpected curve balls. There is no doubt in my mind that this Spectrum quality has earned its recognition from our clients and is a true Spectrum Hallmark. I often hear, “you guys never say no”, “no challenge is too big for you”. Music to our ears! That’s making and keeping the committed choice to our customers. It seems to me that the best, most lasting relationships are those rooted in friendship and trust. Enjoy the message below; remember to thank those in your life that make a difference. I think one can take the same approach in their businesses. The “I’m All In” mentality comes to mind. Every division within our company operates with the “I’m All In” committed choice. Getting to know our customers, God Bless, spending quality time, allows for Mel greater business opportunity and Page 2 UN-THANKED PEOPLE When William Stidger taught at Boston University, he once reflected upon the great number of un-thanked people in his life. Those who had helped nurture him, inspire him or who cared enough about him to leave a lasting impression. One was a schoolteacher he'd not heard from in many years. But he remembered that she had gone out of her way to put a love of verse in him, and Will had loved poetry all his life. He wrote a letter of thanks to her. The reply he received, written in the feeble scrawl of the aged women, began, "My dear Willie." He was delighted. Now over 50, bald and a professor, he didn't think there was a person left in the world who would call him "Willie." Here is that letter: "My dear Willie, I cannot tell you how much your note meant to me. I am in my eighties, living alone in a small room, cooking my own meals, lonely and like the last leaf of autumn, lingering behind. You will be interested to know that I taught school for 50 years and yours is the first note of appreciation I ever received. It came on a blue-cold morning and it cheered me as nothing has in many years." Not prone to cry easily, Bill wept over that note. She was one of the great un-thanked people from Bill's past. You know them. We all do. The teacher who made a difference. That coach we'll never forget. The music instructor or Sunday school worker who helped us to believe in ourselves. That scout leader who cared. We all remember people who shaped our lives in various ways. People whose influence changed us. Bill Stidger found a way to show his appreciation – he wrote them letters. Who are some of the un-thanked people from your past? It may not be too late to say, "Thanks." -- Steve Goodier Page 4 Client Profile: Christina Carey Alliance Aviation Services at Fort Worth Alliance Airport in Fort Worth, Texas How you know Spectrum and since when: I have known “Team Spectrum” for 8 years. In 2006, we took over production of the Fort Worth Alliance Air Show. We didn’t know much about producing an air show, but the one thing we were certain of was our expectations of any partner to be first class, professional and provide good quality and great service. Spectrum was selected as our partner in 2007. The entire team has been a blessing to work with over the years. We definitely made the right choice. Tell us about your family: I am married to Eric and have three beautiful children, daughter Taylor-17 and two boys Cal-10 and Cooper-6. We live on a cul-de-sac with 20+ kids so we have a revolving door not to mention a high electric bill, kids constantly in and out! Eric is in sales, played basketball at Sacramento State and finished up at Texas Wesleyan and was on a men’s softball team until about 5 years ago. Taylor is a Junior in High School with no drivers license (as she reminds me often), she hopes to make the track team her Senior year. Cal (named after Cal Ripken) has played baseball since he was 3 and has recently found a new love, basketball, which Dad coaches. Coop started playing baseball at age 3, he’s tough and very competitive with his older brother. It’s family tradition for the boys to have #3 jersey’s. As for me, I played softball for 11 years, coached by my Dad. I could underhand a mean pitch. Your interests when time permits away from our crazy world: I enjoy watching my kids play sports, taking care of our home, DIY projects, organizing, Pinterest, bargain shopping (Amazon.com is great), boot camp, going to the movies, but my guilty pleasure when the kids haven’t taken over the TV with Nickelodeon (aka Sponge Bob) is watching a wide variety of programs such as My Strange Addictions, Botched, QVC, Shark Tank and Dateline. My favorite Saturday morning ritual is to get up very early while everyone is still asleep, turn on Country Music TV, fill the kitchen sink with Pine-Sol or Fabuloso and clean house… it’s my “thinking” time. My mom used to do the same thing. Favorite foods, books, vacation spots: My favorite food is Mexican…chips and salsa, enchiladas, tortilla soup…I like it all. I absolutely love and crave at all hours of the day sweets. You name it, I’ll eat it except coconut, real nutty sweets and solid chocolate. Skittles, Whatchamacallit, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, 3 Musketeers, Rice Krispies, Peppermint Ice Cream, Lemon Cake and Andies Mints are my favorite. I don’t read often but I’m looking forward to getting my hands on Ghost Boy, about a misdiagnosed boy trapped inside his own body…interesting. My favorite vacation spot is any place with sun, water, shopping and delicious food (buffet or all-inclusive is a plus). Moon Palace Golf & Spa Resort in Cancun, Mexico was amazing but as a family we’ve spent many summers and made many memories in Destin, Florida. The Woodlands Ice Rink The Woodlands Ice Rink is a holiday tradition to many families here in The Woodlands. This is nothing different for this family. Every year they enjoy the ice rink with their son who we were fortunate enough to have back this year. Thank you for spending your 2014 - 2015 holiday season with us! Page 6 FROM THE DESK OF DIANNE HOLMES 15 Traits of the Ideal Employee I recently read an article written by Ken Sundheim, Founder and CEO of KAS Placement. Ken Sundheim is also a contributing writer for Forbes and Business Insider. He highlights some great qualities to look for when hiring new employees. When hiring for any size business, it’s not what the candidates know today. Information can always be taught. The most intelligent companies hire on future success and heavily weigh personality when determining the most apt employees. Regardless of industry, pay, age or sex, all ideal employees share some common traits. These include, but are not limited to, individuals who can be described as or possess the following: 1. Action-oriented – Hire employees who take action and take chances. While chances may lead to failure, they will more often lead to success and mold confidence while generating new ideas. Stagnant employees won’t make your company money; action-oriented employees will. 2. Intelligent – Intelligence is not the only thing, but it’s a strong foundation for success. While there are many variables you can be flexible on when hiring, intelligence is a must or you’re going to be spending an abundance of time proofing work, micromanaging and dealing with heightened stress levels. the company, you have your own tasks to take care of and, when you delegate activities to the individual whom you’re hiring, you don’t want 20 questions, rather you want execution. 5. Display Leadership – Do you see this individual being a significant part of your company and leading future employees of the firm? Leadership begins with selfconfidence, is molded by positive reinforcement and repetitive success. 6. Cultural Fit – Are you going to enjoy working with this individual on a daily basis? Are your employees going to enjoy working with this individual? When recruiting, personality can mean the difference between an employee who doesn’t stay long and fails to produce vs. an all4. Autonomous – You are hiring an em- star who is going to significantly ployee who can get the job done without increase your competitive adextensive hand-holding. As the owner of vantage. 3. Ambitious – Employees can only help your company if they want to help themselves have a better career. Ambition is what makes a company innovative, it’s what spawns creative ideas and what generates candor and openness amongst employees. Page 7 7. Upbeat – Employees who come into work fresh and energetic everyday are going to out produce workers who think negatively and easily burnout when they encounter defeat. Upbeat and optimistic employees create a working environment that is unique, spawns new ideas and, just as important is enjoyable for the other people involved. 11. Detail Oriented – Attention to detail is crucial or mistakes will be made within your company. Detail-oriented employees take pride in their work. They dot the “i’s”, cross the “t’s” and get the job done. 12. Modest – The most sought after employees shout their value not through their words, but rather through their work. They are humble; don’t need to 8. Confident – Confidence produces pump themselves up in front of others results and encourages employees to and quietly out produce those who do. take on challenges that others shy away from. You can train on an employee on your product or service, but you can’t train someone to have integrity, resiliency, self-confidence and work ethic. The smaller the business, the more crucial any hire is. Be flexible on background requirements, but continue to be stringent on personality traits. - Dianne Holmes Page 8 Greetings from NYC!!! We are working hard to get the venue open. Snow “storm” Juno caused us to postpone our soft opening on the 27th. So, our brandspanking new (and AWESOME) staff will hit the ground running with Diana Ross on February 3rd (pics and stories to follow)! I want to give a shout out to everyone that has come to Brooklyn to help get this beautiful venue on its feet. Jason Reed, Jeremy Davis-Towle, Josh Murray, Kelly McGovern, John Ward, Nic Peterson, and Kyle-the-Micros-guy…without you guys, we never could have come this far. Thank you for all that you’ve done and for keeping me grounded and focused. Enjoys these pictures. More to follow. See y’all soon!
