Earthquakes are movements or vibrations caused by release of stored energy in Earth’s outer layer. Scientists use an instrument called a seismograph to measure seismic waves. Seismic waves are energy that is released as vibrations. The four layers of the Earth are crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core. We live on the Crust. It is Earth’s outermost layer. The crust is the thinnest layer and it is also solid rock. As you many know, the crust is deeper under continents than oceans. The layer under the crust is the mantle. The mantle is the thickest layer. It is a layer of rock lying below the crust and moves or flows due to pressure and high temperatures. The mantle allows the tectonic plates to slowly move. Under the mantle lies the core. The last layers of Earth are the outer core and the inner core. The outer core is totally liquid and made of melted iron. The inner core floats in this layer.
