Rules: Hou rs of f un G EN MIT Y E learning in ev d ery an b ! ox • Place any number of cards from the box of 550 face-up on the table • The object of the game is to discern (or guess) the definition of the word using only its picture • The group determines whether the player gives the correct definition of the word or its synonyms based on the text side of the card • If the player is correct, he or she keeps the card, which is worth one point • If the player is wrong, the group reads aloud the entire text side of the card and places the card face down (text side up) on the table • When only text side cards remain on the table, flip all cards face-up and continue playing until no cards are left • The player with the most cards at the end of the game is determined the winner • Variations of the game can be played where bonus points are given for correct antonyms, contextual usage of the word in a sentence, or correct pronunciation. • Take turns as the “Wordsmith” • The Wordsmith pulls a card randomly from the box of 550, shows the card to all players, and then reads aloud the pronunciation, part of speech, and definition provided on the text side • Each player then writes a sentence using the word in its proper context on a slip of paper and gives the paper to the Wordsmith • The Wordsmith copies the sentence from the back of the card on his or her own piece of paper and mixes it with the players’ sentences • Once all sentences are submitted, the Wordsmith reads each sentence aloud • You earn one point by correctly choosing the Marie’s Words sentence, and one point for each player who chooses your sentence • A player cannot earn points while acting as the Wordsmith • The player with the most points at the end of the game is declared the Marie’s Wordsmith! • Tip: Sometimes it is more beneficial to pick your own sentence to fool others even though you don’t get a point
