As the Spring of 2010 draws
near, so too does the annual Florida Marine Science Educators Association’s Conference. This year
the conference committee, led by
chairs Howard Rutherford, Sara
Hamilton, Mellie Lewis and Dawn
Walker, have an amazing event in
the works for the weekend of
May 14th-16th in Key Largo. The
conference theme for this year is
Changing Reefs; Corals on Acid
and as you will see as you look
through the conference registration packet enclosed in this copy
of the Drift, there is something
for everyone. That includes fieldtrips ranging from diving to dolphin encounters, to presentations
from amazing speakers like cartoonist Jim Toomey and concurrent sessions from the current
marine science educators from
across Florida.
The annual conference is also
the time to celebrate your fellow
marine educators’ hard work and
dedication to the field. The John
Beakley Marine Educator of the
Year award is given to an educator who has demonstrated dedication to promoting and developing marine science in Florida while
the FMSEA Service Award is
given each year to a FMSEA
member who has exhibited dedicated service to the organization.
These awards recognize the best
in marine science educators in the
state of Florida but require you
to nominate them. For more information on these awards or how
to nominate your colleagues for
these honors, please see the article on page 3 or visit the FMSEA
website at www.fmsea.org. Additionally, you can also find out
about the FMSEA Teachers
Trust Fund that awards scholarships to educators (both formal
and informal) to attend professional development workshops and
conference like this year’s
FMSEA Conference.
It is also time for the call for
nominations for the FMSEA
Board of Directors. This is a
great opportunity for members to
take a leadership role in the organization. Positions currently
open include; President- elect,
Secretary, Treasurer, as well as
Regional Directors for the Panhandle, North, and West Central
Regions. For more information

SEEKING: FMSEA OFFICERS
The FMSEA Board is now seeking nominations for the following positions:
Regional Director
Regional Directors (RD) are clearinghouses for information about marine science education events, activities
and opportunities. RDs create and support training and professional development opportunities and work to
nurture and actively grow that professional network of marine science educators that is FMSEA’s single greatest benefit. RDs must attend and contribute to all Board Meetings. Perfect for new FMSEA members looking
to get involved.
Two-year appointment (starting May 2010)
Seeking nominations for the West Central, North and Panhandle Regions (see FMSEA display for regional
boundaries).
Secretary
The FMSEA Secretary must attend all Board Meetings and is tasked with recording, preparing and distributing the minutes. Secretary is also responsible for maintaining Board policies and maintaining compliance of
the Standard Operating Procedures.
Two-year appointment (starting May 2010)
Treasurer
A vital position for the entire FMSEA organization, the Treasurer maintains the financial records and accounts. This position demands a dedicated person who will be required to attend all Board Meetings and support the growth of FMSEA as a whole.
Three-year appointment (starting May 2010)
President-Elect
The President-Elect serves for one-year as the de-facto vice president, filling in when the FMSEA President is
unavailable, before assuming the office in the following year. The President-Elect also collects the nominations for the next round of elections and awards. As President, you’d be responsible for organizing and presiding over Board meetings, providing leadership on FMSEA-related issues, and being generally presidential.
As Past-President, you get the added bonus of planning the FMSEA Annual Conference!
Essentially a three-year appointment (starting May 2010)
If you’d like to become more involved with FMSEA or know someone who’d be great,

2010 Conference Registration
We’ve got great plans for FMSEA 2010 – Changing Reefs: Corals on Acid. The conference will take
place at Coral Shores High School in relaxing Key Largo with field trip sites in and around the
Florida Keys. Just take a look at what we have in store:
Friday has an incredible slate of field trips, workshops and events.
This year’s field trips include diving in the Keys, kayaking through the Everglades and a unique
opportunity to spend the day on the water engaging in “real” coral reef restoration efforts with Dr.
Ken Nedimyer. You might also choose to take advantage of one of our half- or full-day workshops
where you can renew your Aquatic Species Collecting Certificate, become CPR-certified, or
“discover” SCUBA!
Friday evening events are a skip and jump away from the Conference Hotel. Come, relax and take
in one of the spectacular sunsets at the Nelson Government & Cultural Center, while enjoying
drinks and appetizers with colleagues. The evening will be highlighted by our opening speaker, Dr.
Billy Causey. Dr. Causey is the Southeast Regional Director for the National Marine Sanctuary
Program of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. We’ll cap the evening in style
with a fabulous dinner and dancing under the stars.
Saturday will feature cutting-edge marine science research and education.
We’ll start Saturday off with a discussion panel featuring experts in research, education and policy
related to global climate change and the impact on our coral reefs. Sessions will feature the best of
marine science education and research in. Throughout the day we will make a selection of sessions
available to non-participants via Webcast. The Call for Presenters is open now (see pages 16-17).
Our annual silent auction and social will be held at Sundowners Restaurant. Enjoy a drink, do
some networking and place your bids. Your contributions go to support educator scholarships and
all donations are fully tax-deductible. If you’d like to contribute an item for the auction, see page
14 or simply bring your donation(s) with you to the conference!
After our annual business meeting and the installation of officers, we’ll enjoy a keynote address
from Jim Toomey. A cartoonist for the past 17 years, Jim has been writing and drawing the daily
comic Sherman’s Lagoon, which is syndicated to more than 250 newspapers in North America, including the Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune, the San Francisco Chronicle and the Toronto
Star.
You can learn more about Jim and Sherman’s Lagoon at his website: http://www.slagoon.com.
He’s a can’t-miss speaker at a can’t-miss event!
