Editor’s Comments
The weather always seems to be a popular topic in Alpine, and we’ve had a little of both rain and
sunshine, for which we are thankful. Some of the flowers actually popped back after a month of rain and
very little sunshine, so we can enjoy their beauty a little longer. We are already seeing some colored
leaves mixed in with the green, which reminds us that the next beautiful season in Alpine is just around
the corner. We hope you enjoy every season – they all offer something different and a treat for the
senses. It’s been nice to see golf groups on the course and other outdoor activities are ongoing – pick out
what interests you and join in the fun. We are a friendly community, so newcomers will always be made
to feel welcome. With the departure of Caleb, our golf pro, we owe a big thank you to Freddie, our GM,
who has donned his other hat to keep things running in the golf operation. He has some competent staff
in the pro shop helping, and we’re sure the rest of the season will be well-managed. Watch for the
upcoming tournaments and plan to join in before you put the clubs away for the season. Sign-up sheets
and information are on the bulletin boards in the golf shop and will be noted in FWIW also. It’s
encouraging to see building activity, too, and that’s a good sign that Alpine is growing. Enjoy Alpine no
matter what the weather.
Next FWIW comes out Fri., Sept. 4th. Watch for reminder email for your articles, and please email items
to [email protected]. or use the FWIW box on the lobby counter. Please keep your articles brief
so we can fit all the news in each issue. And please help us keep FWIW a positive publication – good
news is always better than negative issues. Remember that folks outside Alpine can read FWIW. Thanks
for your cooperation and participation. Enjoy!

Thoughts, Prayers & Thank You Messages
This section of FWIW is one of the best loved because it gives us an opportunity to keep up with our
neighbors and friends by reporting good news as well as offering support when folks are going through
difficult times. Thank you for passing along updates and news.
The family of Bob “Gunner” Combs held a memorial service in his memory at the Memorial Rock in
Alpine on Sun., Aug 16th at 4:00 PM. The celebration of his life followed at the home of Tony & Sheila
Amato. His niece, Sharon and her husband Dick, thank all the folks from Alpine who attended.
On a personal note, Loring Young lost his sister Maryland this week, after a long, valiant battle with
cancer. We appreciate all the concern and caring of our Alpine friends and neighbors.
We know there are some in our community dealing with health issues, family and friend losses, and other
challenges, so if you know of someone who would like us to remember them in this section of FWIW
(with their permission), please let us know. We also ask that you continue to remember friends and
neighbors we’ve mentioned in previous issues…the need is ongoing. Thank you.

Dietary Supplement Health & Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA) is the statute which defines and
regulates dietary supplements. FDA approval is not required before marketing by supplement
manufacturers. There is also limited power to intervene regarding adverse effects that may be caused by
these products. Contents vary widely from product to product. Dr. Hoadley will define what constitutes
a dietary supplement, what DSHEA means to consumers, and answer your questions about this important
health issue. Please take advantage of this opportunity to be an informed health products consumer.

YARN BOMBING in ROWLESBURG SZILAGYI CENTER
Editor’s Note: If you haven’t yet made a 9” square, please try to do one and we’ll send them all
together…will only take a little while to complete, and we’ll be part of this great project. Thank you.
This event was reported in the Preston County Journal and brought to our attention by property owner,
Shirley Melmed.
The proposed yarn bombing is to fill a huge tree at the Rowlesburg Szilagyi Center and all Preston
residents are encouraged to participate. Yarn bombing is described as a type of graffiti or street art, using
colorful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn, rather than paint or chalk. It is hoped the completed project
will be a great addition to the 10th Anniversary of Arts in Preston on October 10th. It’s a simple idea –
participants are asked to knit or crochet a square to be used to adorn the tree outside this center – any
color, no design needed, only request is that the square be 9”x9” and that they have it by Sept. 15. Grab
your leftover balls of yarn and get those creative juices flowing. If you want more information, contact
the organizer Janet Szilagyi at (304) 329-1514 or email her at [email protected]. There is also a medallion
being used as a fundraiser – costs $10 and proceeds benefit Riverbend Art Studio. Check it out and
consider getting involved in this fun project.

TERRA ALTA CIVIC CLUB SEEKS MEMBERS – by Norma Eckard
Our club was formed over 40 years ago and, though membership has been up and down, the club has
survived. In recent years, we have lost members due to illness, death, moves from the area, ‘burn out’,

Club members, volunteering great amounts of time to the club mission. Now, it is essential that we
continue to recruit new members. Review the list of projects and donations below and say ‘yes’ to
becoming a member of the Terra Alta Civic Club! “She who does her best, does well.”

We will be receiving a formal Thank You from the Garrett County Lighthouse for the many wonderful

were overwhelmed by the myriad of items remaining from the Alpine yard sale. Most certainly the
Lighthouse clients who suffer from mental illness or are mentally-challenged will be overjoyed at all the
new inventory for the store. Many, many thanks!!

is untrainable????
Join this fun, relaxed group each Monday – show up at 4:00, tee at 4:30 and dinner and jokes afterward in

Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night!
Tip – the benefits of stretching: Stretching can make you more flexible and help you move better
(including being able to swing a golf club easier). Stretch before you golf, but also throughout the day.
Helpful times include upon waking, before bed, and after sitting for long periods.

GOLF AT ALPINE LAKE….More News
ALLGO INVITATIONAL – by Sue Aamodt, Chair
The annual ALLGO Ladies’ Invitational was held on Aug. 13th and it was an outstanding success. The 63
participants representing 12 courses (including Alpine Lake) enjoyed a beautiful day filled with golf,
food, fun, and the renewal of old friendships with the opportunity to make new ones. Congratulations are
extended to ALLGO members Mary Ann Krewson, 1st place team; Ann Dunson, 3rd place team, and Vicki
Zimpo, Closest to Pin #3. Way to go, ladies!! The men of Alpine Lake once again pitched in to help
during the entire day as greeters/bag handlers, ball-spotters on the course, CTP monitors, photographers,
roving relief and managing the putting contest. Their assistance was appreciated by all. Alpine Lake
employees involved with the event were fantastic…thanks are extended to the Pro Shop staff, expertly led
by CJ, restaurant staff, Lauren Kotula, Ron (motel maintenance), housekeeping, and to our GM, Freddie
Harrison.
Finally, the event would not have been successful without the assistance of the ALLGO members who
pitched in to help organize and run the tournament. Thanks are extended to Birgit Stock, Cathy Young,
Barb Conway, Phyllis Teets, Vicki Zimpo (and her friend Mary Beth Harnish), Becky Meacham, Jenni
Mills, and Mary Ann Krewson. Their willingness to volunteer their time and talents, as well as making
monetary donations, directly contributed to the success of the event. Thanks are also extended to the GBs
(Golf Buddies, aka TTs) headed by Norleen Hoadley, for their help with setting up the Evergreene Room,
assisting with the registration and ticket sales, and helping put together the men’s lunches. Honesty
Buczek, Peggy Caudry, Marg Gearhart, Michele Hall and Barb Herndon all helped to make the event
“one to remember”. Please forgive the author for failure to include the name(s) of others who volunteered
to help with this year’s event.
Editor’s Note: We acknowledge the leadership of Sue Aamodt, who was the overall Invitational Chair again this
year. She organized tasks and kept things on track from beginning to end, and we all appreciate her efforts to
make this year’s invitational another very successful event.
“TEE IT UP & BELIEVE” GOLF EVENT – by Sue Aamodt

Bob Hope was one of the most beloved entertainers in America. He was born in 1903 & died in 2003,
just a couple months after turning 100. He was famous for his jokes about golf, usually poking fun at his
own game, including:
“Golf is my real profession. Entertainment is just a sideline – I tell jokes to pay my greens fees.”
“If I’m on the course and lightning starts, I get inside fast. If God wants to play through, I let him.”
“Bing (Crosby) always said my swing looked like Grandma Moses trying to keep warm.”
Thanks for the memories!

OF INTEREST TO OUR COMMUNITY
CHECK listings on the last page of FWIW for a complete line-up of activities that are on-going in
Alpine. There’s something for everyone, so choose your favorites and participate. It’s a great way to
enjoy your friends and neighbors and do fun things, too.
ALPUC NEWS – from Kim Mayne, ALPUC
We all have been blessed with some extremely beautiful weather as of late, enabling us to get back on
track with our outdoor chores. With fall quickly approaching and the weather man predicting that we
may have a lot of snow this winter, it pays to be prepared. A reoccurring challenge we see at the utility
company is lack of proper winterization of homes. This lack of winterization leads to water loss and,
sometimes significant damage to homes. If you leave your home during those winter months, please plan
to attend an informational meeting on SUN., SEPT. 20th at 12:30 PM. Bob Berry, a local contractor,
will speak on the subject of winterizing your home and offer some helpful hints and tools to all
homeowners. Last year’s informational meeting was found helpful by many who attended, so we felt that
the information conveyed should be done annually as a refresher, and for those who have not had the
opportunity to attend in the past. We look forward to seeing each of you there, and for those that cannot
attend, we hope to pass along some of Bob’s information with your September billing statements.
Editor’s Note: We will include the location of this meeting in the next issue.
TERRA ALTA FOOD BANK – There is an ongoing need to replenish supplies at our local food bank,
so please add your donations whenever you can to help this worthy cause. There is a box inside the front
foyer of the lodge for your convenience. Please continue to be generous in your giving to help those in
need. These donations directly benefit our local Terra Alta community. Thank you.
ACOUSTIC OPEN MIC REPORT – by Ron Rogers, Open Mic Host
Thursday, Aug. 6th – Big night last night. Countthehouse counted 71 in the big room; there were not
enough tables set up and the smaller room had a good number of folks which are not in the count. The
dance floor took up some space where we could have had tables. We had 9 players and 6 different
instruments represented. Next week, in remembrance of Elvis’ death, the theme will be an Elvis song.
Soon it will be Original Song Night, so get ready.
Thursday, Aug. 13th – Fun night in spite of a broken power box. Countthehouse said 51 in the audience
and we had 10 players on 6 instruments. It was good to have Mike and Joe back. We “did good” by
Elvis. We’ve done trains and planes, so next week is “BOATS”. Lots of boat songs to choose from so
get cracking. KCB
Laughter is the sensation of feeling good all over and showing it principally in one place.

ALPOA BOARD NEWS
PRESIDENT’S REPORT – by Ginger, Tucker, President
Reminder: Those property owners interested in volunteering for this important Ad Hoc Committee on
Information Flow should submit your name to board member Tom Kinsey (412) 720-1037 or email:
[email protected].
The board needs to adjust meeting times over the next couple months. So that everyone will know the
schedule, we will post on the Alpine Lake website, the bulletin boards and mailbox kiosks, as well as the
FWIW and Newsletter articles.
Aug. 21 – 10 AM – Board Workshop
Aug. 22 – 10 AM – Property Owner Meeting
Sept. 8 – 6:30 PM – Board Workshop
Sept. 18 – 10 AM – Board Workshop
Sept. 20 – 2 PM – Property Owner Meeting (switched to accommodate Oktoberfest festivities)
Oct. 13 – 6:30 PM – Board Workshop
Oct. 16 – 10 AM – Board Workshop
Oct. 17 – 10 AM – Property Owner Meeting
Several property owners expressed concerns about the sad state of the mini golf course. Lorraine Hart
researched extensively and obtained a $25K estimate for an exact replica of the one we have. The board
is deliberating and will determine the expenditures for the next season. In the meantime, GM and
Facilities Manager will evaluate and determine the safety issues and possible closure.
The board is currently reviewing the standing committee charters, given the resignation of the golf and
tennis chairpersons. Communication between the board and committee chairpersons is partly to blame.
Therefore, we would like committee chairpersons to attend board workshops as much as possible to assist
us in this review.
A rumor that the board was considering a special assessment to pay for the dam work is unfounded. The
board is waiting on contractor bids to determine cost on the current engineering plans. Those plans still
need to be approved by the WV Dept. of Environmental Protection (WVDEP) before anything can
proceed. Our goal is to seek grant assistance from the state for some of this required work. Please
contact a board member or the GM when you hear rumors, to verify the facts.
The pool work is finally winding down. The liner should be installed next week and all necessary finish
work the following week to ready the pool for inspection and WV certification. The board will announce
the grand opening, once these milestones have been met.
The backbone of surprise is fusing speed with secrecy!

COMMITTEE REPORTS
BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE – by Barb Conway & Wilma Rumble, Co-Chairs
Short and sweet this time – There will be a Beautification meeting on Wed., Aug. 26th at 12:30 PM (after
lunch) in the Mtn. Laurel Room. Please try to attend, as we would like to make some plans for next
summer before the “snow birds” depart.
PROPERTY OWNERS COMMITTEE – by Bernie and Birgit Stock, Co-Chairs
We are in the process of preparing for the late summer events, as well as trying to enjoy what’s left of
summer at Alpine Lake.
The Annual Yard Sale held at the Boathouse Aug. 7th and 8th was a great success. In addition to raising
$500 for the T.A. Food Pantry through a bake sale and donations, items were also donated to various
charities (Lighthouse in Oakland, Preston Senior Center and the Preston Middle School). Remaining
items were taken away by Delano’s for a nice donation. We are grateful for his help and support – please
check out his warehouse/store in Terra Alta for a plethora of things old and new – a great experience!
After expenses and donations, we saw a profit of $6,111.82. Many thanks to all the POs who volunteered
their time, help, monetary donations, trucks, items, baked goods and temperament to make it the best
ever.
The Labor Day Picnic will be held at the Boathouse on Sunday, Sept. 6th, starting at 1:00 PM (no excuse
for the folks going to church). The POC will supply paper goods, hamburgers, hot dogs, corn, lemonade,
iced tea and coffee. BRING YOUR FAVORITE COVERED DISH/DESSERT to SHARE. Other
libations will be for sale. A freewill donation jar will be available for those wishing to help with
expenses. There will be music, games and good weather (hopefully) for all to enjoy. GM & BoD
members are cordially invited. THIS IS FOR ALL PROPERTY OWNERS AND THEIR GUESTS.
Oktoberfest Weekend is just around the corner. Mark your calendar for the 3rd Saturday in Sept. (19th).
We will be hosting the very best party around. Don’t forget to invite your family and friends. You can’t
beat the food, foam, and fun on a beautiful fall day with friends and family. We need lots and lots of
volunteers to give us a couple hours on this special day. More to come in the next FWIW…stay tuned!
LAKE COMMITTEE – by Jim Hoadley, Chair
The Lake Management chair surveyed the boats at the boatyard on Aug. 12, 2015, and found most boats
in compliance with 2015 stickers clearly visible. However, 29 boats had old stickers or no stickers.
Fluorescent green tape and a note were left on the boats. Numbers were written down from available
expired stickers. The office will match the owners and contact them. However, those with no stickers
will be impossible to reach. Boats will be removed to another storage area in mid-September, if not in
compliance. This is not new news. Homeowners should be aware of this through assessment
notification.
COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE – by Charlotte Wiles, Chair
The Communications Committee is beginning to collect pictures for the 2016 Alpine Lake calendar.
Must be of good quality and beauty. Send to [email protected]. An update of the Alpine Lake
phone book will be coming out in September. Any additions, deletions and/or changes should be sent to
Nina Sheets ASAP. Thank you.
Letting the cat out of the bag is a lot easier than putting it back in.

The website’s main page has drop-down boxes for anyone to access information regarding; About Us,
Amenities, Lodging, Golf, Dining, Alpine Lake Real Estate, Group Sales, FWIW and Book a Tee Time.
The property owner ONLY side can be accesses by clicking on “Member Login” at the very top right of
the main page. The user name is your section and lot number. A preassigned password was assigned to
each property owner. If you cannot access this side, contact Lauren, who can assist you with the
information needed to get on the site; then you can change the user name and/or password to your choice.
The member only side has postings for community property owner notices and information. The list of
subjects to choose from are: ECC Forms, ALPUC, Emergency Contact Form, Governing Documents,
ALPOA Meeting Minutes, Newsletter, Monthly Reports, FWIW, Community Chat, and Events. The
“Community Chat” is a forum for Alpine Lake property owners ONLY to post comments or start a
conversation on any and all subjects of interest. This is similar to Facebook, but it is private to our
community. Share the “alpinelake.com” website with everyone. Not only will they get all the
information about Alpine Lake, but they can view the many beautiful scenes of our wonderful
community.
