The industrial revolution is a period of time when the
process of manufacturing was changing. Some
changes that led to the revolution was changing from
hand tools to machines, the use of steam and other
powers instead of humans and animals, and the use of
factory systems. Some things that would not exist
without the revolution is automobiles, telephones,
radios, and electricity.

Urbanization
Urbanization is when there’s a sudden growth of
population in the urban areas. Urbanization gave
people jobs, but there is a negative side to all the
working and jobs. Something’s that urbanization
caused is the stand of living was terrible because of
over populating the air was polluting, and there was a
shortage of water. It also caused family structure to
change since the men had better jobs the men became
the head of the households and made enough for the
The domestic system was a manufacturing system
where workers make products in their own homes. The
factory system was the start of using machines to
manufacture products. With the domestic system,
manufacturers can work at their own pace and
products can be more unique and one of a kind. With
the factory system, the product would be more durable,
cheaper, and easier to make. Which system would you
choose the cheaper, durable one or the one made with
love and care?
Cotton Industry and Domestic Labor
The cottage industry was a type of domestic system.
The cottage industry was first used to help farmers
during the winter months because they couldn’t farm.
The cottage industry referred to people who worked
from their own homes sewing or lace-making.

Protect Domestic Labor?

NEW TECHNOLOGY
Domestic labor is a worker who does household chores
for the family. For example, a domestic worker would
be a maid. A maid takes care of the house and does
things like clean the house. Domestic labor is someone

women to stay home so it cause gender discrimination.
Population during urbanization boomed because of all the
jobs. It gave people a chance to make something more of
themselves and provide for their families. Cities have
always been the center of economic growth because
that’s where everything is built and where jobs are
offered. So during urbanization, everything grew causing
positive and negative effects.
industrial times, the work was hard, but there were no
benefits to working. Labor laws are what the employees
can expect from the job. Labor laws cover things like what
days employees can get off, wages, safety, and benefits.
What caused labor unions? Labor unions formed because
the people just wanted fair rights. Labor unions fought for
the benefits that hard workers weren’t getting and fought
against child labor. In order to be heard, labor unions
started to go on strikes. What better way to get attention
than to go on a strike? The strikes would get violent, but
at the time they just wanted what they were asking for.
When our rights are taken from us things can get dirty.
Inside Look into Child Labor
Young Chris Evans has had enough of working. In a
recent interview, he says he just wants to be a kid again.
He wants to be able to run around and play ball again. We
all must remember adults are the ones who are supposed
to provide for our children not the other way around.
Chris says, “Working is so tiring I am only 9 years old, and
I have to work like my parents. It’s just not fair. I want to
go to school and play outside.” Who can stand there and
ignore this child’s plea?
Adam Smith
Adam Smith is the author of The Wealth of Nations. The
Wealth of Nations is one of the most influential books of
all time. Smith was the main thinker behind the idea of
laissez-fair economics. He wanted the government to stop
telling businesses what to do, and businesses to follow
the “invisible hand” instead. Smith was also contributed to
the division of labor. The division of labor is a system that
divides work giving one task to one person and another
task to another person. For example, making a toy car
one person can make the body all day, and the other
person could work on the wheels and put them on.
Emigration and Immigration
Emigration during the industrial revolution was huge.
Everyone wanted to go to the urban cities because that
was where the jobs were. If there was work then the
people were going to that are because work provides for
the family. Immigrants also cam flourishing in from other
countries. The main source for all of this traveling is the
source of money, and with money there comes food and
security. 

Karl Marx
Karl Marx wrote The Communist Manifesto. Marx thought that
hired to perform household chores. Some may disagree
with domestic labor because some domestic workers are
treated more like slaves rather than actual workers.
during the industrial revolution it caused the rich to get richer
and the poor to get poorer. Marx came up with the idea of
communism. Marx believed that since there were more workers
than owners the workers would get tired and start a revolution.
To Marx, he believed that everyone would make the same
amount of money, there would be no social classes, and the
society would only produce what it needed. Marx’s communism
believed that there would be no private ownership and
everything would be owned by either the state or government.
This is definitely the less violent idea of communism.

too many useful people.” –Karl Marx
