PaulCassell,RonaldN.BoycePresidentialProfessorofCriminalLawandDistinguishedUniversityProfessorof LawattheS.J.QuinneyCollegeofLawattheUniversityofUtah.ProfessorCassellreceivedaB.A.fromStanford Universityin1981.HethengraduatedOrderoftheCoiffromStanfordLawSchoolin1984,servingasPresidentof theStanfordLawReview.In1984-85,heclerkedforthen-JudgeAntoninScaliawhenScaliawasontheU.S.Court ofAppealsfortheD.C.CircuitandthefollowingyearforChiefJusticeWarrenE.BurgerontheU.S.SupremeCourt. From1986to1988,ProfessorCassellservedasanAssociateDeputyAttorneyGeneralintheU.S.Departmentof Justice.From1988to1991,heservedasanAssistantU.S.AttorneyintheEasternDistrictofVirginia,prosecuting manyfelonycriminalcases.In1992,ProfessorCassellbeganteachingattheS.J.QuinneyCollegeofLaw, publishingwidelyinleadingacademicjournalsoncrimejusticeissues.Hehasfiledbriefsandorallyarguedon behalfofcrimevictimsandcriminaljusticereformandalliedorganizationsintheUnitedStatesSupremeCourtand otherfederalandstatecourtsaroundthecountry.In2002,ProfessorCassellwasconfirmedbytheU.S.Senateto serveasaU.S.DistrictCourtJudgefortheDistrictofUtah.WhileontheDistrictCourt,ProfessorCassellwrote manyopinionsthatattractedsignificantattention,includingthefirstopinioninthecountryfindingthefederal sentencingguidelinesunconstitutionalfortheirfailuretoprotectjurytrialrights.In2007,Cassellresignedhis judgeshiptoreturntolawteaching.ProfessorCassellcurrentlyteachescriminalprocedure,criminallaw,andother coursesattheCollegeofLawattheUniversityofUtah.Hehaspublishednumerousarticlesonsentencing, includingarticlesintheStanfordLawReviewandtheFederalSentencingReporter.
