Well, I’ll be a monkey’s uncle! Who would’ve thought that aRWSome has
a new home – arwsome.com is live.
In keeping up with the times, aRWSome now has its own blog site. Get
news about the Resort, upcoming TM events, perks and even take part in
contests (we have one this month!) all in one place. It’s accessible from your
mobile phones and from home, and you’ll be able to check for updates that
impact you any time, any day.
We’ll still have our print issues, so for those who prefer having your copy
and read it too, they will still be there at the aRWSome stands. We are
working on making these more digestible along the way, to help you get the
‘news’ at a glance.
We made a mistake…
In p16 of aRWSome Jan 2016, we published that
Christopher Torno and Komsin Sahatrakul have PhDs.
While both good doctors have a Doctor of Veterinarian
Medicine (DVM), these are not PhDs. We are red-faced
for this booboo, and our apologies for the mistake.
As usual, send us what you think of our new site, and all the accompanying
changes. Let us know if there is a monkey on your back, what irks you, stuff
you’d like to see, and always, your stories we can publish.
We are not monkeying around this Year of the Monkey, so hit up
arwsome.com today.

RWS keeps bizSAFE
STAR status
Donnie Yen and Cecilia Wang are RWS Brand Ambassadors
RWS has obtained the bizSAFE STAR
status for the second consecutive cycle,
the only integrated resort to do so. The
Star status is the highest level in the 5-step
bizSAFE programme that helps companies
build up their safety and health capabilities
to keep employees safe at the workplace.
Reminder: Gifts and tips
As RWS Brand Ambassadors for 2016, the celebrity couple of Donnie Yen and wife Cecilia
Wang will star in an upcoming advertising campaign showcasing the attractions at the Resort.
Donnie Yen, accomplished movie star and action director, says: “If there is one definitive
destination on the Asia tourist map, then RWS is certainly a must-visit for everyone, especially
for those looking for the perfect place for family bonding.”
Festive seasons are great for feasting and
gifting. But as we toast to a successful year
ahead, it is timely to remember the following:
• On tips: RWS has a ‘No-solicitation
of Tips’ policy. Team Members should
not directly or indirectly solicit tips
from guests. Any tips approved for your
retention should be declared to Rosalind
Tiow (Human Resources) for CPF and
tax purposes. Team Members working
outside the Casino are not allowed to
accept chips as tips.
• On gifts: Acceptance of entertainment
and gifts are discouraged. Team Members
may accept in instances when it is
discourteous or impractical to decline.
Declaration is required for gifts estimated
to be $100 and above. The HOD will
decide if the recipient may retain the
gift, or for it to be used for department
activities.
Please contact your HR Relationship
Managers for any clarifications and assistance.

BORN UNDER THE SIGN
OF THE
WORDS AND PHOTOS BY JIMMY SHO
MONKEY
People born under the different zodiac signs are said to exhibit certain natural characteristics.
We run these through some TMs born under the sign of the Monkey.
Simon Loh Hong Haur, F&B Assistant Director
Which trait associated with those born under the sign
of the Monkey best describes you?
Versatile and adaptable to various situations,
environments and working conditions. I have worked
in various operations, from five-star, hip and boutique
hotels to a catering company, country club and cruise
ship. When I was younger, I have even been doing sales for
insurance and health products.
Chef Jeffrey Tan, F&B Director of Kitchens who has
worked with Simon since 2010 on many projects and
events in our Casino says: Simon is cool and self-assured.
When we work together, unlike us chefs who are always in
a rush for time, Simon is usually the patient one. One of
our projects for the now-defunct Garden Court involved
inviting notable hawkers to visit and set up a temporary
stall there. The meetings to convince them tend to
require a lot of waiting – before they’d even talk to us. At
these times, Simon will be the one advocating patience.
Sometimes we ended up ordering four cups of coffee each!

FEBRUARY 2016
Jim Wu Chun Hoe, Hard Rock Hotel Assistant
Front Office Manage
Which trait associated with those born under the sign of
the Monkey best describes you?
Curious. I like to read instruction manuals from the
beginning to the end, even though I may already know the
basics after reading the Quick Start section. This way, I get to
know all the functions available for the item.
Diana Chong, Hard Rock Hotel Guest Services Executive
who has worked with Jim for the last four months says:
He is certainly curious. He’s always trying to find out about
how our hotels operate differently from other city hotels,
and always chatting with TMs to get to know them better.
He sometimes surprises me with personal stories about other
TMs that I don’t know about – and I’ve been here longer
than him!
Those born under the sign of the Monkey in
the Chinese Zodiac are said to:
• Be sociable, witty and have a magnetic personality
• Be mischievous and are masters of practical jokes,
which can sometimes irritate their recipients
• Be fast learners, crafty opportunists who enjoy challenges
• Be self-assured and enthusiastic
• Be curious and restless
• Be versatile and tend to hold many interests
• Prefer urban life (over rural life) and
enjoy people-watching

Monkey at the Resort. Here are some snaps.
Lee Xin Yan, Procurement Executive
Which trait associated with those born under the
sign of the Monkey best describes you?
Self-assured. My mum took me to the doctor when I was
a child as she was worried that I was too thin. When the
doctor assured my mum that my weight was acceptable,
my spontaneous reply was: “Since I am healthy, it does
not matter if I’m thin”.
Teo Li Xian, Procurement Executive who has known
and worked with Xin Yan for one year and five
months says: She is an outspoken person who is not
afraid to voice out her opinions. On the other hand, she’s
also a very sociable and fun person that, at times, shows
her serious side.”

HUAT A FEAST!
WORDS BY JANE KOH
What’s Lunar New Year without Yu Sheng and all those auspicious
dishes? Here are three must-tries on the menus of restaurants

Hot and Sour Soup
When it comes to prawn dishes, freshness makes or breaks the deal. These large tiger
prawns scored high on the freshness scale, which evident in its moist crunchiness.
The secret sauce concocted by Chef Li teases the taste buds with a medley of
sweet, savoury and mildly spicy notes. But the real surprise comes in the form of
watermelon rings. They add a refreshing contrast to the taste and revitalise the
palate with its juicy fruitiness.
This dish is the definition of still water

this clear soup packs a punch with its good
balance of sour and spicy. The wholesome
chicken soup base is made by simmering
minced chicken breast meat for six hours,
then braised with red flower crab meat for
added crustacean sweetness. What looks
like noodles turn out to be skilfully sliced
tofu that slides down your throat with every
spoonful. One of the best soups I’ve had in
recent years.

This is one Yu Sheng that will impress everyone at the table, from in-laws to business
partners. I mean how often do you see anything more than mere piles of shredded
vegetables? In comparison, this monkey-shaped Longevity “Lo Hei” by Chef Li
Kwok Kwong is a work of art. In line with the monkey theme, Chef Li added banana
chips and banana nut crunch cereal to
the toss. On top of that, there’s smoked
salmon, crispy fish skin for extra crunch,

SECURITY
What makes a good Security Team Leader?
WORDS BY QIU YIZHENG
A Security Team Leader’s role spans across the Resort properties,
from the casino to hotels, attractions and more. It comes with a
myriad of daily challenges that the Leads have to resolve, with each
day seldom being the same. A Security Team Lead tells us how he
takes these on with clarity of purpose, service and teamwork.
CLEAR PURPOSE
To meet these challenges, it is paramount to focus on our mission
and raison d’etre: to provide a memorable guest experience by
ensuring a safe and secure environment. This clarity of purpose
helps instil confidence in my security officers in carrying out their
work.
To further prepare ourselves to deal with uncertainties, I refresh
them of important security protocols, key activities and recent
security incidents during the pre-shift briefings. Throughout my
watch, I would repeat these same points to my officers. All to ensure
the resort is safe and secure.
SECURITY WITH A TOUCH OF SERVICE
The Security team embraces the notion of customer service can
be provided without compromising security. Simple greetings,
accepting travel documents with both hands, helping guests locate
their lost properties and rendering medical assistance are small ways
that make our guests’ visit to RWS a memorable one.
TEAMWORK
Security team does not work in isolation. It is in our DNA
and part of my emphasis to the team to work closely with various
business units’ and outsourced partners to achieve the desired
outcomes.
We update other business units of happenings that may affect their
operations, such as unserviceable doors, leaking pipes, and system
malfunctioning. We also provide the security coverage and response
to incidents so that other Team Members can work with peace of
mind.
At the end of the shift, the happenings of the day provide me with
stories that I could share with other security teams. The sharing
brings us together, strengthening our integrity, service and teamwork
– the core values of the Security Department.

Impressed at Hotel Michael
This is the first time my family and I stayed in Hotel
Michael. Our pleasant stay started with the great
service given by Cecilia Liew, who worked at the
Front Desk. She noted that my family of four was booked in the deluxe
room and we requested for an extra bed for our young children. She
took the time to show us a deluxe room and a deluxe premium suite,
and gave us sufficient information for us to make a decision to stay
at the deluxe premium suite at an additional cost. Furthermore, she
arranged for us to make an early check-in so that we could enjoy the
facilities around RWS.
Besides that, we also requested for the invoice to be changed to my
name instead of my husband’s, as he was the one who booked the hotel
online. Ms Liew put in a lot of effort to accede to our request, staying
well beyond her working hours and showing us the revised invoice that
same evening.
We bragged about the great service to our family and friends, and
we hope Ms Liew will be suitably commended / rewarded. We will
definitely return to Hotel Michael again, and look forward to be
served by Ms Liew and your good staff.

Kudos to West Zone Wardrobe Team
I misplaced my work pass in my uniform, which was sent for washing.
When I couldn’t find my pass the next day, I approached the wardrobe
team at west zone. Two ladies (Chor Eng and Lay Khim) explained
where my laundry was and when it will be back. They also assured me
that they will check with the vendor and took down my particulars.
I went back during lunch time and was served by Lionel.
Unfortunately they had found nothing yet, but Lionel assured me that
they will check with the vendor again. He updated me at the end of
the day that my pass has not been found yet, but they will continue to
check.
The vendor eventually found my pass. Lionel tried calling me several
times to inform me, which I missed as I could not check my phone
due to work. Kudos to the Wardrobe team for their initiative and
professionalism. Although it is my fault that I lost my pass, they made
my problem theirs and took correct and swift
measures to retrieve my pass. Many thanks to the
Lionel and his team!

A FENG SHUI INN
WAITRESS
A DAY IN
THE LIFE
OF...
WORDS BY LIAU YUN QING
PHOTOS BY LI JIANDE
A good waitress isn’t just about taking and serving orders. After following Wang Xia, waitress at Feng
Shui Inn, I discover that this role requires a good memory, a pleasant demeanour, strong arms and the
ability to stand on the feet for a whole day.
Wang Xia
Wang Xia is part of a 22-person Waitress team at Feng Shui Inn. She’s usually in the first
shift, working from 10am to 10.30pm, with a three-hour break in between.
The hour before the restaurant opens at 11am is spent on preparation. We find out the day’s
specials from the head chef, share that amongst the team during the morning meeting, and
do a quick check that we have sufficient dining utensils, supplies of water and welcome
dishes for lunch.
Tables are usually set the previous night but Wang Xia kindly
shows me how she does it. For a four-person square table, she takes
only ten minutes to clean, replace the table cloth and set it up for
the next guests. I help unfold a ‘napkin bird’ which, along with the
utensils, needs to be arranged in specific directions.
10
FEBRUARY 2016
Before the guests arrive, I try if I am capable of serving guests
without tripping over my feet. Wang Xia shows me a trick to hold
the tray using just one hand – by laying the tray flat on her palm. It
looks easy for her but I struggled to carry the weight of a full teapot
and the tray on one hand. I’ll need to do more crunches.

Busiest periods at Feng Shui Inn include weekend lunch
and festive seasons. A waitress has to be alert and be
ready for many things, including showing new guests to
their seats, picking up new request signals, and refilling
tea cups and pots before being prompted. For the square
table section for which we are assigned to, it can get
up to 40 guests at its busiest. Even then, this section is
overseen by only two waitresses so it takes some skill to
keep calm and poised during such times.
Customer service also doesn’t end when guests leave,
as Wang Xia tries to remember every guest and their
unique requirements. It is always special to be asked
“Would you like the usual?” when they return.
While tipping is not required, sometimes guests are
suitably impressed to leave tips. These are shared at the
end of the month among the whole Feng Shui Inn team
(from chefs to dishwashers), recognising that everyone
plays a part in running a great restaurant.
During festive occasions, Feng Shui Inn sometimes
operates a special stall. This Lunar New Year, Wang
Xia gets to manage the Festive Goodies stall, which
includes arranging the display and fulfilling pre-orders
from guests. She recommends the new Eight Happiness
Chinese Rice Cakes for those who like coconuts, so drop
