Steps To Read A Multisyllabic Word
These steps can be very helpful in supporting developing readers on how to decode a
word by using sound/syllable awareness and not exclusively relying on orthographic
memory or oral language. These steps can also be very helpful in helping teachers
identify exactly where the reader is breaking down in the decoding process.
1) Identify how many syllables are in the word by
counting the vowel sounds in the word.
2) Segment the word into syllables ensuring that each
syllable has one vowel sound and only one vowel
sound.
3) Place a dot under each sound in the first syllable.
4) Say each sound in the syllable.
5) Blend the sounds in the syllable.
6) Repeat for the remaining syllables.
7) Assign stress to the first syllable.
8) Try to blend the word.
9) If the stress is not appropriate, assign the stress to the
second syllable.
10)Try to blend the word.
