December 2012 - Saint Brendan School

November 21, 2012
Fire Prevention Week
On October 10, some firefighters came to our
school. We met firefighters Brian Sellon, Pat
Malone, and Lieutenant
Dave. Brian Sellon is the
driver of the fire truck
and he also climbs up the
ladders to cut holes in the
roof. Pat Malone also
helps Brian Sellon cut
holes. Lieutenant Dave
orders the firefighters to
break windows, cut holes,
etc.
When there is a
fire, a fire alarm rings in
the firehouse. If they are
in the fire truck, they use
the radio. In the fire truck
that we saw, they had
about 25 tools. Some of
the tools they used were
called adze, metal saw,
halligan, rabbit tool, etc.
Their biggest ladder can
go up to 110 feet. The fire
hose shoots about 250
gallons per minute. The
students also got to blow
the incredibly loud siren!
Next time you see a fire
truck, close your ears!

On Friday October
5, 2012, St. Brendan School
students in grades 3-6 went
to the Cathedral of the Holy
Cross. Eight schools attended this mass including 7
schools and 1 home
schooled group. Close to
500 kids came to the cathedral.
Kids from across the
country celebrated this mass
in their own church. The
Cathedral was built in 1803.
Mr. Flagg and Mr. Quigley
were Knights. They both
helped bring the statue of
Mary to the altar. Molly and
Kate noticed that if you look
at the shadows from the end
of the pew, its looks like
Mary praying.

K2C Field Trip to the
Pierce House
K2C had a great time visiting the Pierce House in October. They were able to see
what colonial clothes looked
like and even got to try them
on! They really enjoyed the
field trip, especially finding
out that in colonial times,
people would hide a shoe in
the wall for good luck!

News from K1-B
K1-B has been busy preparing and learning
about the importance of the Thanksgiving holiday. The students shared with me some of the
things they are thankful for. One response that
stood out was "I am thankful for all the wonderful things God has given me!"
During this time it is important for us to remember the simple things that God has given us
in life! Along with learning the importance and
true meaning of the holiday, we also learned a
fun Thanksgiving song that we shared with the other students and teachers during our Monday morning assembly!
TURKEY DINNER
Turkey dinner, turkey dinner
Gather round, gather round
Who will get the drumsticks, yummy yummy yum sticks
All sit down, All sit down.
Cornbread muffins, chestnut stuffing
Pumpkin pie, one foot high
We were all much thinner before we came to dinner
Me oh my! Me oh my!
We hope you all have an awesome Thanksgiving!

Here is a picture of a bulletin board that K1C made.
Grade One
First grade students wrote about their
Thanksgiving. Ryan Hobbs will visit
with Auntie Paula. She will make turkey
and vegetables. They will watch football
and play in the woods. Emma Phan will
go to her cousin Sabrina's house. She
will travel with her parents and grandparents in their gray car. However you
might celebrate Thanksgiving, we wish
you a peaceful and loving day.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Pre-K
In Prekindergarten we have been working really hard.
We are in a great routine and LOVE our new
classroom.
In September we learned all about each other and met
new friends. We learned a lot about apples and did lots of arts
and crafts. We had several birthday parties, learned a lot
about each other through different games that chanted each
other’s names. We had several moms in to read to us during
the day. We even had a Nana come in, this was
especially exciting.
In October we learned about Halloween and went to
church for the first time as a group. We worked on identifying the letters in our names and the alphabet.
We played many games which involved
finding a certain number of things in our class. If
the number of the day is three we would have to find three
items, and tell our friends if they are the same, different, long
or short.
In science we had a special visit from Mrs. Cronin,
our fourth grade teacher who observed us learning about the
water cycle. We even did an experiment about rain. We had a
large clear bucket full of water with shaving cream on top.
We slowly added blue food coloring and watched the clouds
fill till they couldn’t hold anymore and it started raining.
We finished October with a wonderful Halloween
parade.
We began November with a special mass for All
Saint’s Day. We learned about St. Brendan and St
Francis.
We are learning a lot about how America was
discovered and the first Thanksgiving. We enjoyed having
our very own Thanksgiving feast at school.

News from Grade Three
As this school year began grade three welcomed two new students, Juan Pablo Mirales
and Dominic Piscopo. The boys transitioned so well into a new school, making new friends,
and participating in extra- curricular activities.
Choir and Drama Club are a big attraction for the third graders. Ms. Davis, our very
talented director, is in charge of both. On Sunday, October 28th the choir sang for the first
time at our parish Family Mass. They did a fabulous job and received many, many compliments from members of the congregation. It was so good to hear the children’s voices lifted
in song and prayer.
As we prepare for the season of Advent the children are busy learning their lines for
the annual Christmas pageant. Their enthusiasm permeates our classroom!
Last week we welcomed Henry Dembrowski who was very impressed with our school
and the excellent work being done with the John Collins writing program. Henry is the primary instructor of this program in the Boston area.
On Friday, November 9th we attended the Veterans Program which was organized by
Mr. May, our sixth grade teacher. Sherry Dellascio, our guest speaker and a graduate of the
class of ’88, shared her experiences aboard a naval aircraft carrier with all in attendance.
Sherry also thanked the students for their faithful communication with her while on her tour
of duty. Not only did she appreciate all the cards and letters but it kept her connected with her
family here at Saint Brendan School.
While busy with our daily schoolwork we also took time to send greetings and letters
of appreciation to our seniors and our many brave soldiers both on active duty and here at
home. Hundreds of letters went to veterans at the Brockton Hospital and a check for $325.00
was given to the administrator at the Veterans Hospital in West Roxbury.
We look forward to all of the special and exciting events that surround the beautiful
season of Advent.
Grade Three wishes you and your loved ones a very happy Thanksgiving.
Grade 4 Persuasive Writing:
Should Water Bottles be Banned in the Grand Canyon?
Yes, we should have water in plastic bottles
being sold. Think of it this way, how would
you get water if you were on vacation? A
couple of years ago, a pipe coming from the
Quabbin Reservoir broke and we had to
drink from plastic bottles. If we did not
have plastic water bottles, we would have
been dehydrated. Some of us could have
died! If we did not have plastic water
bottles, we could not recycle as much as we
do now. If you work for Polar Springs or
Aquafina, you would lose your job! That is
why we should have water sold in plastic
bottles.
Niall Ryan
My opinion is no, water should not be sold
in bottles at the Grand Canyon. My opinion
is no because most people are already
spending lots of money at gift shops and
they do not need to be spending $1.00 or
$2.00 on water when they can just bring
their own. My other reason is because it is
too expensive for a little thing of water.
Another one of my reasons is that a water
bottle will never decompose so that means
that there will be litter everywhere.
Hopefully water bottle selling will slow
down. Gianna Vlastos
Plastic bottles with water in them should be
allowed at the Grand Canyon. What if you
are climbing up the Grand Canyon and you
take a sip of soda. In twenty minutes, you
will be thirsty again. If you drink water, you
will be hydrated. Water is also very healthy.
When you recycle the bottles, you can use
them over and over again. A thermos is
heavy. A bottle of water is lighter. These
are my reasons why plastic bottles should be
sold at the Grand Canyon!
Amanda Hughes
Water should not be sold in plastic bottles.
Bottles are made from petrochemicals and it
is a waste of oil. We have a scarce amount
of oil in our country right now. That is even
part of the presidential debate. Another
reason is that plastic does not decompose.
Eighty percent of plastic bottles are not
recycled. If plastic ends up in an ocean,
river, or zoo, an animal could mistake it for
food and die. We have enough endangered
species. Another reason is that plastic
bottled water can be a dollar or even more!
A gallon of water that comes through the
pipe in your house costs about one penny.
People just throw bottles down at the Grand
Canyon. That is why we should stop selling
plastic bottles at the Grand Canyon.

St. Brendan Politics
On the 13th of September,
2012, our school held a nervewracking election for a position on
the Student Council. There were
positions for four officers and ten
representatives- one for each class.
Only a 6th grader could run for officer (president, vice president,
secretary, and treasurer) and 6th,
5th, and 4th grades could run for
representative. Grades from 3rd
grade up were given a ballot and
allowed to vote.

Mr. May’s Intramural class
Mr. May, our 6th grade teacher, has been teaching sports in
an afterschool program called intramurals. In the first session
he taught flag football and now he’s been teaching floor
hockey. In the next session, he will have 2 different classes:
one for intramurals and one for health and fitness.
Entertainment
Artemis Fowl
Recently, we have both read
Artemis Fowl, by Eoin Colfer. In this
first book of eight, we follow Artemis Fowl II on his quest for fame
and glory. Artemis, a twelve year old
Irish boy, is a member of the Fowl
family, one of the most notorious
crime families in the world. A power
hungry criminal mastermind, Artemis wants nothing more than to keep
the family business alive. This is because his father has gone missing off
the coast of Russia (that’s another
story). With his mother in a state of
depression because of this, the only
family Artemis has is his bodyguard,
known only as “Butler”, and Butler’s
younger sister, Juliet. He discovers a
secret world known as the Lower
Elements, an underground world
home to fairies, with the city of Haven as their capital. With the Lower
Elements Police, or LEP, protecting
them, the fairies’ lives are carefree.
This all changed when a member of
the Recon Division, Captain Holly
Short, is kidnapped by Artemis. No
one is safe now.

Transylmania 2
Transylmania 2 is a good free computer
game. It is about a vampire named Vampy
that gets his teddy bear stolen by an evil villager. Vampy needs to defeat villagers that
don’t like him. Later in the game he encounters villagers, archers, pirates, bats, skeletons, and werewolves.
At the end of the game you find the
man who stole Vampy’s teddy bear. But
when you find him, he might not be what
you expect and he might be bigger too! On a
scale of 1 to five we give this game 3 stars
out of 5 stars.

On November 6th, 2012 there was an election to decide who will be
the President of the United States. The senator was elected too. In our
school we had our own election. In grade 5 we decided to have another
election! Our results were different from the whole school election. We
voted Barack Obama for our president and Scott Brown for our senate.
Barack Obama got 11 votes and Scott Brown got 11 votes.
The people that were also running were Elizabeth Warren who got 8 votes
and Mitt Romney who got 8 votes. In the real election, Barack Obama and

Student Survey
On Friday , October 19, 2012 Colleen Casey came to Saint Brendan
School. She is a senior psychology major at Saint Anselm College. Colleen is from Braintree Public and graduated from Thayer Academy in
2009. In order to graduate she has to type a 50 page essay, on how children judge people on the way they speak without knowing their background. She wants to be a counselor when she gets her masters. When she
came into our classroom she passed out a 3 page questionnaire and played
3 different accents of men who said the same things in different orders.
We were all happy to help her graduate.
