Environment
Niugini Nickel has a strong commitment to the environment and operating in
an environmentally sustainable way.
The Wowo Gap natural environment comprises tropical rainforest with moderate to
large sized trees, bushes and undergrowth. The cover is virtually continuous with
very few gaps.
The area has a tropical monsoonal climate with an average rainfall of 1.5 to 2 metres
in the wetter part of the year between December and April.
Niugini Nickel personnel conduct tree surveys to monitor the impact of exploration on
the forest environment.
As an example, we try and minimise the loss of trees and recycle any timber from
harvested trees by using a portable timber milling machine to provide materials to
build new office facilities and housing at the Wowo Gap project site.
Water quality of nearby creeks and streams is also closely monitored on a regular
basis. Flow rates are also monitored.
