PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Well, here we are, 2017, a brand new year. How will
pitching shoes go this time around? Will the ringers be
more frequent? Will you be trying a different shoe? Will
you bring in a couple of new members? If you are
around the Monticello area, you will have six new courts
to pitch on.
Do any of you out there know how to help me? When
I’m pitching, I seem to have an aim point problem. I don’t
think it’s in my step, but it might be in my delivery. After
making 1, 2 or even 3 good shoes, I will have a flyer off
to the right. I always try to remember what I was doing
when the good ones are happening. My problem is
when I have a good day, I somehow remember wrongly
what I did when I did it rightly because what I
remembered that I did when I did it, it doesn’t work when
I do it again.

Wilbert Ferdinand Foelske, 87, of Waterloo,
formerly of Denver, Janesville, and Waverly, passed
away on Wednesday, Dec. 21 at UnityPoint HealthAllen Hospital in Waterloo.
Wilbert was born on the family farm in Jackson
Township, Bremer County, on April 15, 1929, the son
on William John and Charlotte Brockhoff Foelske. He
was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter Lutheran
Church in Denver. He attended the Janesville
Consolidated School.
In addition to farming, Wilbert worked at Rath
Packing, the Janesville School, and Paul Neiman
Construction. He was a long-time member of St. Paul
United Church of Christ in Denver.
After surviving polio as a youth, Wilbert took up
the hobby of horseshoe pitching, being taught by his
neighbor, Bill Pyor. He carried his love for horseshoe
pitching throughout his life. He was a three-time Iowa
state individual champion and won more than twenty
state doubles titles. Wilbert also won several Tri-State
Championships, and competed in the top class at two
World Horseshoe Tournaments. He is a member of
the Iowa Horseshoe Pitcher's Hall of Fame.
In addition to his wife of 62 years, Wilbert is
survived by two daughters, Diane (David) Ryherd, of
Denver, and Donna Foelske, of Waverly; a son,
Daniel (Pam) Foelske, of Batavia, Ill.; nine
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Wil was one of Iowa's top pitchers pitching many
tournaments all around the state as well as attending
many of the Iowa State Fair tournaments during his
pitching years. He has won several championships
which include two Men's Championships in 1983 and
1987. He also won the Eldora Indoor championship in
1994, He won the Farmers State title in 1980; he
captured ten Doubles championships, six with Ralph
Simon from 1978-1983; one with Pat Simon in 1986
then three more times with Lee Wiges from 1987 to
1989.
3
FEBRUARY 2017
I first met Wil in 1977 at my first sanctioned
tournament. He and is wife, Grace, put on the first
outdoor tournament of that year in Waverly. I had
arrived early to pitch 100 shoes to qualify and I was
the first one there. When I told him my name he
asked me; "Are you related to Ralph?" to which I
replied, "Yes, he's my Dad". He looked at me then
asked, "Do you pitch as good as him?" To which I
had to reply know. I qualified that day at 16%. Wil
and Grace would help other tournament directors run
their tournaments, and Grace could be found working
the scorers table at many different places,
Manchester, Independence, Waverly, Denver,
Charles City and Waterloo among others that I may
be forgetting. Wil was one of those pitchers who, if
there was a tournament, he was probably
there. When I first met him I believe his average was
in the mid 50's to 60's. He really improved his game
after Dad retired and he would come to Waterloo
several days a week and pitch with Dad. His average
really took off during those years and that was when
he won his championships. Wil was a long time
member of the Waterloo Metro Horseshoe Pitching
League, having started the first year (81) when he
took the spot of a player who dropped out. His
highest league game was 88% as I recall, he had
thought it was 90% but after recounting it was shy
that one ringer. He was an excellent pitcher and a lot
of fun to pitch with.
- - Pat Simon
College, now known as the University of Northern
Iowa. He also served in the United States Air Force
and was stationed at Offutt Air Force Base and
Japan. He and Barbara Hemphill were married on
February 15, 1985, residing in West Des Moines.
Jack was very proud of his Irish heritage and
thoroughly enjoyed a trip to Ireland to visit the
ancestral home in County Mayo. Traveling was a
great interest of his, and in that same vein, so was
dining at ethnic restaurants, preferably Asian. The
sport of pitching horseshoes was another passion for
Jack; he was an avid supporter of the game and
participated in the Iowa Games and various
tournaments as well as league play.
Jack is survived by his wife, Barbara of West Des
Moines; son Rod, daughter Regina Suitt. all of
Tucson, AZ, and daughter Andrea Riley of Virginia
Beach, VA.
In lieu of flowers, Jack has requested that memorial
contributions be directed to Hospice of the Midwest,
9203 Northpark Dr., Johnston, Iowa 50131.

C. LEO BUELL
Jack Navin, 81, passed away on Saturday,
December 10th at the Good Samaritan Society in
Indianola. A memorial service was held Tuesday,
th
December 27 with burial of the cremains at the Iowa
Veterans Cemetery, in Adel.
Jack was born to Paul and Lucille (O'Connor)
Navin in Omaha, Nebraska on June 23rd, 1935. At a
young age, he and his family moved to the Irish
community of Melrose, Iowa, where he grew up. Jack
graduated from Melrose High School and attended
Centerville Junior College and Iowa State Teachers
C. Leo Buell of Iowa City passed away January 6,
2017. Leo was born December 20, 1930, in Charles
City, Iowa. He was introduced to horseshoe by his
4

future father-in-law, Cliff Bucknell.
On Sunday
afternoons, Leo would go over to see his future wife,
Joan. It wouldn’t be long until Leon was in the yard
pitching horseshoes. In 1965 in Charles City, Leo
won his first trophy and Cliff came in second.
In 1966, Leo moved his family to Iowa City and did
not pitched very much, until he read an article in the
paper about Art Hampton winning the 1970 State
Indoor Championship. Art was contacted and Leo
bought his first pair of Ted Allen Horseshoes from Art.
At the same time, Art introduced Leo to the NHPA.
Leo went to a tournament in Columbus Junction
where he witnessed some of the great Iowa players - Red Henton, Harold Darnold and Bill Vandegriff.
In 1982, Marianne Colony and Leo organized the
Iowa City Horseshoe League. In 1987, he was
elected President of the IHHPA. He served in that
office for four years. After that, he served as Area
Regional Director of Southwest Iowa. In 1996 he was
elected Chairman of Regional Directors
In 1998, Leon organized the Iowa State Regional
Team Championship, patterned after the Team
World. The Championship is held every year during
the Iowa State Fair.
In 2000, as a member of the Lions Cub, Leo was
involved with a program called, Coming to Your
Senses. It was a program to screen and provide
early detection of vision and hearing impairment in
children. Leo organized a horseshoe tournament
benefit which raised over $2,500. Leo also hosted
blind horseshoe tournaments in the Iowa City area.
With assistance, blind participants would listen for the
sound of someone tapping the stake, then would
throw a horseshoe in the direction of the tapping.
In 2005, Leo was inducted into the IHHPA Hall of
Fame. In 2007, he received the Frank Jackson
Award for advancement of horseshoes in the State of
Iowa. In 2010, Leon was awarded the Gene & Mary
Van Sant Memorial Award by the NHPA. This award
is given to the Regional Director who displays the
attitude and initiative in fulfilling his or her duties of
upholding the image of the NHPA.
At the 1978 World Tournament, Leon won his
class, pitching 58.85%;. He was among the top 200
NHPA averages. He played horseshoes for over
sixty years, and including more than 45 years in
tournament play.
Leo made his living farming, working construction
and as an architectural draftsman.
His family
includes his wife of 64 years, Joan; children, Christina
Hendrick (Steve), of San Marcos, California, Lauretta
Doyle (Jerry) of Chandler, Arizona, Catherine Hansen
(Brad) of New Berlin, Wisconsin and Mark Buell of
Iowa City; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be
directed to Iowa City Hospice.
I have known Leo for many years. In the early 80's I
pitched in the Iowa City Horseshoe League. Now
many of the pitchers have passed on. I believe Leo
was about the last of the great pitchers in the Iowa
City area.
When I worked at Sears, Leo’s brother came from
North Dakota to the counter asking in I knew where
Leo Buell lived. I said I practiced horseshoe at Leo’s
place . At the time, Leo and Joan lived near the mall
and to this day Joan has not forgotten this event.
The Iowa City Horseshoe League was very
important to Leo. Nearly every year he had a new
pitcher for our league. Sometimes he needed a
pitcher or another team was short a pitcher. Some of
today’s pitchers Leo first introduced to the Iowa City
League.
The Iowa City pitchers traveled together to many
Tournaments in Iowa and the Iowa State Fair. Leo
attended many World Tournaments and Team World
events.
Leo was the Iowa director for the NHPA for about
20 years He attended World Tournaments and as
director he did the shoe check. As many pitchers
know, at the World Tournament every pitcher has
their shoes checked before pitching. Attending the
World Tournaments, Leo met many pitchers across
the US and Canada.
Even in Arizona over the
years, people ask me if I know Leo Buell. Leo had
many friends he met pitching horseshoes.
- Vern Kollasch
Leo Buell, Gail Maher and Richardson Shepardson represented
Southeast Iowa at the 2013 Iowa State Team Regional
Tournament.
