Internship - Battery Specialist
Location: Manchester, NH
Type: Internship Min. Experience: Student (College)
DEKA offers Internships for full time students* (must be at least 18 years of age). Internships last a minimum
of 10 weeks, 12 preferred, and summer internships are to begin no later than June 12, 2017.
The intern will work with a senior engineer to determine the performance characteristics of rechargeable
batteries by testing them in a controlled environment, and to determine whether or not these characteristics are
acceptable for the intended use.
Responsibilities:
 Develop test plans

Program and operate battery test equipment

Organize large amounts of test data

Derive battery parameters from raw data

Model the effects of battery state of charge, load power, temperature, and age on battery performance

Model capacity loss and impedance rise due to aging and cycling

Present test results in clear graphical formats that any electrical engineer can understand.
Requirements:
 Candidate must be currently enrolled in an accredited college/institution pursuing a Bachelor's (at least
junior level) or Master's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering

Candidate must be proficient at basic electrical circuit analysis

Candidate must be proficient at organizing and graphically presenting data in Excel. Experience with
Matlab is a plus

Internship - Control System Engineer

Job Description:
 Develop control systems for automated testing on a innovative medical device


The position will require gaining a working knowledge of requirements management tools, develop of

Requirements:
 Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate Electrical and/or Mechanical program, at
least junior level (Masters level preferred)

Have a strong background in both Electrical and Mechanical disciplines

Experience with Python and C++

Knowledge of Doors DXL is a plus (but not required)

Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills


Internship - Mechanical Engineer
Location: Manchester, NH

Responsibilities:
 Work with a small mechanical group designing a family of medical products

Support the mechanical group and accomplish tasks with minimal direction.

For example, a task could be to design a part/assembly using Solidworks, that will be integrated into one
of the products or a fixture to test a particular part. The part/assembly may then be prototyped, built and
tested. The part/assembly may then be prototyped, built and tested.

Alternatively, the candidate could be asked to support the group’s manufacturing engineer by entering
bill of material information into ARENA.

The complexity of the task will be commensurate with the experience and completed college course
work.
Qualifications:

Solidworks experience

Mechanical aptitude and ands on mechanical experience (working on cars, fixing bicycles or FIRST

Internship - Model Maker
Location: Manchester, NH

Founded and run by Dean Kamen, DEKA Research & Development Corp. is dedicated to using state-of-the art
technology and innovative design solutions to improve lives. We work in a fast paced environment that
encourages creativity, professional growth and accountability. We are looking for the right highly creative
Model maker to intern with us for the summer of 2017. This person should have a passion and interest in
visualizing substantive design solutions to widespread health and infrastructure problems.
DEKA’s Design team functions as an in-house consultancy supporting development projects as well as
DEKA’s business needs. We collaborate with project teams to research user needs and provide design
solutions (Industrial Design, User Interface, Prototyping and Human Factors) that blend the technology solution
with the human need. The scope of our work starts with the definition of the intended user experience and
continues through to ensuring the design intent of the final implementation of the product. Prototyping is a key
area within the design team to support that effort and we are looking to grow our capabilities.

Responsibilities:
 Planning along with the development team when prototyping can be used on a project as well as how to
prototype specific concepts
 This candidate will be expected to challenge and grow their skill set as part of the Design Team’s efforts
to find new ways to expand and improve DEKA’s prototyping capabilities
 Creating appearance models using a variety of fabrication methods including but not limited to:
machining, objet printing, sls printing, foam carving
 Sanding and painting printed parts
 Sanding and polishing plastic and metal parts
 Creating silicone molds, color matching, and casting urethane parts; cycling these molds
 CAD surfacing and CAD model development (depending on CAD capabilities) of design concepts
 CAD database development of prototype molds so they can be machined
 Creating test fixtures in metal, wood and plastic
 Setting up and running parts on a laser cutter
Qualifications:
 Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program focusing on model making, at least
sophomore level
 Attention to detail in surface quality and finish that is documented in a portfolio of well executed
prototypes
 Experienced painter: comfortable using and maintaining HVLP guns. Being able to use them to apply
high quality surfaces of colors, clear coats, and textures.
 Self-motivated and self-directed
 Enjoys solving problems and are naturally curious about new technologies
 Familiar and capable with typical shop tools and machines
 Some experience in silicone molding and urethane casting is desirable
 Experience with Pro-E, SolidWorks or Autodesk Inventor preferred
 CNC experience a plus

Internship - Systems Engineer
Location: Manchester, NH

This R&D Systems Engineering Intern at DEKA Research & Development, located in Manchester, NH will
support the peritoneal dialysis team in performing product design and development tasks, as well as research
and testing activities, developing proofs of concept or feasibility demonstrations, and debugging and analyzing
challenging problems, under the guidance of assigned R&D engineers in support of the team’s objectives.

Responsibilities:
 Complete assigned tasks and daily activities in the department.

Execute tasks in the department in direct support of research, proofs of concept, testing, new product

ethics and compliance at all times.

Assume responsibility for successful completion of assigned projects and tasks.

Contribute to and review technical documents and materials produced by the department.


Requirements:
