Start Screen: is where all Windows Apps reside, with Tile icons of popular programs, and real-time streaming of updates and notifications for apps like weather, investment, and social sites. More ‘start’ screens exist if many apps are owned (swipe from right to left on a touch screen OR roll down on a mouse). Right-click at the bottom of the screen, then Click all Apps to see all purchased Apps and all programs on the device. A C Lock Screen contains the time, date, sign-in access, and certain notifications. To unlock your PC, swipe, or press any key to view the Login screen and log in with your password. Use Charms, Settings, PC settings to set how long until the Lock Screen appears. To Log Out click User Portal (upper right) and Sign Out. To return to the Lock screen, click Lock. D E A = Start — stores all Windows Store Apps and pinned programs/files B = Desktop — tile takes you to the traditional desktop that displays programs, the Taskbar, and the Folder window C = User Portal — shows user, & is quick access to user settings D = Charms Bar — appears when you swipe from right, or hover over the upper or lower right corner (contextual to what is open/where you are) E = Minimize the tiles when you click the ‘minus’ or maximize when you click the corner when they are already small Navigating the Start Screen +Tab Open an app or pr ogr am, Tap (or click) its Tile To see what apps are open, Hover at the very upper left corner and then drag downward (or hover lower right and drag upward). Access ALL Apps by Right-Clicking the lower portion of the screen and choosing All apps. Bring up the Taskbar wher e you can PIN (or unpin) an item to the Start screen by Right-Clicking (in/on an app). Hover the pointer over the lower por tion of the scr een to access the horizontal scrollbar. Use the mouse, too: wheel down to move right, and wheel up to move left. To rearrange tiles, Click and Drag them. To create a group of apps, Click, drag and drop one on a vertical gray bar that appears (drag another on top to put it in the group). Name a gr oup of apps by Right-Clicking just above the group To make an app’s tile smaller/larger, Right-Click on the tile, select smaller or larger from the bar at the bottom of the screen Type anywhere on the Start Screen to open Find/Search +C To show ‘taskbar plus’. . . . . . . . . . . . It holds common tools for the open app/ program (context specific). On the Start screen it has: Search to find things (or just type on the screen, or use the Windows Key+F to open Find); Share to send content to your contacts/social accounts; Start to get to Star t OR the most recently opened app; Devices to pr int OR connect to 2nd screen; Settings to adjust basic options, or to get help. Hover over any Charm to display the Time/date. IT HelpDesk 8-3555 Microsoft Windows 8 Navigate among Apps & Folders: To navigate between the Start and Desktop screens in Windows 8, swipe left on a touch screen, touch the Windows key, or point to the deep left corner until a thumbnail of the alternate screen appears (Click). To get to the Desktop fr om within a Desktop pr ogr am, point to the bottom right corner and Click to minimize open windows. Each App has App commands that show what the App can do. To use Apps purchased via the MS Windows Store, or Apps preloaded with Windows 8 to perform common functions, do the following. Switch or Snap Apps— In the Start Screen, you can open multiple Apps at once, and then go between them. Point to the upper left cor ner to Pr eview open Apps, & Drag down to open the Switch list. Click on an App. To View all Apps at once, Click on a Preview window and Drag it fr om the list into the active scr een. It will snap to the side of the open window and stay active. Close an App— Press Alt+F4, OR Hover pointer near the top the screen until it turns into a hand. Click and drag the screen until it minimizes, then pull it off the bottom of the screen. Apps Click Computer to get Folder Window: to Use the Back button or the Forward button return to a previously opened folder. Click the Recent Locations down arrow and select a folder . Click the Recent Places icon under Favor ites and choose a folder, or use the Favorites section of the Navigation Pane. To find a recent Downloaded file, Click the Downloads icon. To Access Documents, Music, Pictures, and Videos, Click the Libraries icon. Buying Apps: via the MS Windows Store allows use Hide a File or Folder: of the App on up to 5 computers (with a Microsoft Account). Click the Windows Store tile. Click the ar r ows at the bottom to move among the App categories (Spotlight, Games, Social, Entertainment, et.al.) Click Top Fr ee or New Releases within a categor y. Open Char ms bar and use Sear ch to find something. Choose the tile of the App you want to download. Click Install. (Enter Micr osoft account infor mation). The new App will automatically appear on the Start Screen. Open the libr ar y wher e you want to cr eate the new folder . Click the Home tab. Select New Folder in the New Gr oup. Enter a name for the folder and pr ess Enter. Pin/Unpin App to the Start Screen: Rename a Folder: Select the folder/file, Click the Home tab on the Ribbon. Select Properties under the Open tab. Select/check the Hidden box. Click OK (may get a dialog box if ther e ar e subfolder s). Create a New Folder: puts or removes a tile for that App on the Start Screen (it does not uninstall the App, just removes the Tile). Open Charms (point to upper or lower r ight cor ner ); Click Sear ch and type the name of the App to be pinned. Right-Click to check the App. Select Pin to Star t from the bar at the bottom of the screen. OR Select Unpin from Start to remove a pinned App. Select the folder to be r enamed. Click the Home tab. Select Rename in the Or ganize Gr oup. Enter a name for the folder and pr ess Enter. Delete a Folder: Select the file or folder you want to delete. Click the Home tab. Select Delete in the Or ganize Gr oup. Hide a File or Folder: Photos App organizes pictures: Select the file or folder you want to hide. Click the Home tab. Select Pr oper ties in the Open Gr oup. Select/check the Hidden box and Click OK. Select whether to hide this one only, or all files/subfolders. Click the Photos tile (clouds and sun). Scroll right at the bottom of the scr een to View Photos from your Picture Library, Facebook, Flickr and Devices. Click Play button to view all Photos as a slideshow. UnHide a File or Folder: Import Photos: Type Contr ol Panel on the Star t Scr een to find it. Type Folder Options in the Sear ch Box. On the View Tab, Choose Show Hidden. Right-click the scr een to open the Taskbar . Click the impor t button. 2 IT HelpDesk 8-3555 Microsoft Windows 8 Desktop: the location for full size programs and functions, still exists in Windows8. A Tile to access it is on the Start screen. A = Recycle Bin— contains deleted items including files, shortcuts, etc. Select and Restore items if needed. B = Taskbar — displays pre-set icons, programs and files that you have pinned to it for quick access. A Right Click to see options. C = Notification Area — shows icons for active and urgent alerts; and has sound controls, date, and time. D = Windows File Explorer — has shortcuts to Documents, Pictures, Music, Videos, Favorites, Drives, Networks, and Devices. E = Internet Explorer 10 — quick launch to the web browser. The Start icon is accessed from the Desktop by pointing to the deep left corner. There isn’t a Start dialog box: instead you go to the Start screen and from there can access the E D B Special Start menu (with Task Manager, Run, etc.). C Use Alt+Tab to go between open Desktop programs. Personalize the Desktop: Recycle Bin: Open Charms (point to upper or lower r ight cor ner ); Click Settings; Click Per sonalization; Click the Desktop Backgr ound icon; Click on the Pictures location box and find your pictur e(s) Choose either one pictur e or a folder (set change images, set an interval in the Change Picture Every section); Choose a pictur e position (if desir ed) Save the changes and Close. Double-Click the Recycle Bin to open it. Click the Manage tab to Restore items or to Empty the Recycle Bin. Pin an Item to the Taskbar: Right-Click an empty space on the Taskbar ; uncheck Lock the Taskbar; Right-Click item to be pinned; Select Pin this to Taskbar. (Choose Unpin to do that for a program or file.) Rearrange the Taskbar: Apply a theme to the Desktop: Click and Dr ag an icon to a new position on the Taskbar . To move where the Taskbar appears, Click/hold an empty space on it and Drag to a corner of the screen. Open Charms (point to upper or lower r ight cor ner ); Click Settings; Click Per sonalization; Select a theme under Change the Visuals and Sounds on your Computer, and Close. Change Power Options: Type Power Options anywhere on the Start Screen to open Search, OR Right-Click in the lower left corner of the screen, and choose Power Options. Change Desktop Icons: Open Charms (point to upper or lower r ight cor ner ); Click Settings; Click Per sonalization; Click Change Desktop Icons; Select the icon to change; Select the new icon fr om the list; Click OK; Click OK again. Personalize the Start Screen: Open Charms (point to upper or lower r ight cor ner ); Click Settings; Click Per sonalization; Click the Color icon; Select the color you want; Adjust color intensity with slider or use Show Color Mixer ; Save the changes and Close. Open Charms (point to upper or lower r ight cor ner ); Click Settings; Click Change PC Settings; Select Per sonalize, and then Click Star t Scr een; Click thumbnails to change visual themes; Click on Color to change the color of the Star t Scr een; Point to the lower left cor ner (or use Windows key) to return to the Start Screen. Personalize Sounds: Change Your Account Picture: Open Charms (point to upper or lower r ight cor ner ); Click Settings; Click Per sonalization; Click the Sounds icon; Click the Sound Scheme box ar r ow, and choose a sound; Select an action in the Pr ogr am Events Box to choose a sound for a particular action. Save the changes and Close. Open Charms (point to upper or lower r ight cor ner ); Click Settings; Click Change PC Settings; Select Per sonalize, and then Click Account Pictur e; Browse (or Select Camer a) to locate the photo; Click Choose Image; Point to the lower left cor ner (or use Windows key) to return to the Start Screen. Change the Color of the Window: 3 IT HelpDesk Microsoft Windows 8 8-3555 Internet Explorer 10: exists as a compact App and as the full browser program which allows Tabs. Both can be on a computer, but a mobile device uses the compact App. The App version has limited functions related to add-ins, plug-ins, and history. It will alert you if a website has an App of its own. On the Start screen, Click the tile for the Program or On the Desktop, Click the Explorer icon on the Taskbar. Find your Address Bar: Right-Click (Swipe down from top) Change your Home Page: Click (Tap) Tools, then Click (Tap) Internet Options; in General Tab, key web address for the new home page; Click (Tap) Apply; Restart IE 10. Repeat to add additional Home Pages that open in separate Tabs. Navigate with Tabs: open webpages appear in miniatur e in the Tabs Bar above the browser page. Use the Tab Tools button to open an InPrivate Tab or to Close all open Tabs. Flip Ahead through Sites: fr om the Settings Char m, Click (Tap) Internet Options to turn on Flip Ahead Weather App: Click the Weather Tile (1st time requires setup of a primary location) Click the scr oll bar at the bottom to view Hour ly For ecast, Maps, and Historical Weather. To See Weather for an Additional Location: Right-Click the Weather App to open the Weather Taskbar Click Places and the + to add a new Place. Enter the Zip Code of the city you want to add Click Add To View World Weather: Right-Click the Weather App to open the Weather Taskbar Click Wor ld Weather (to view a map of the wor ld with current weather conditions) Privacy: choose what to share! Some Apps share personal data. To control what is accessed: Open Charms (point to upper or lower r ight cor ner ); Click Settings; Click Change PC Settings; Click Pr ivacy; Click and dr ag the slider (on/off) for each of the following: Current location, Access to user name & account picture, Automatically submitting content feedback to Windows. Privacy: clear personal information from live Tiles — on the Start screen in the Charms/Settings/ Tiles, Click Clear to remove your personal information. PORTABLE DEVICES Sleep! instead of shutting down There is no need to shut down completely — Sleep: uses very little power; the machine starts faster upon return to use; you go right back to where you were when sleep began; if the battery gets too low, the device turns itself off. Simply Close the lid or pr ess the Power button. Access Help and Support from Start: Right-Click on the Star t scr een to open the Taskbar . Click All Apps. Click the Help and Suppor t icon (?). Type a topic into the Sear ch box, OR Click Br owse to view common topics, OR Click Contact Support to contact Microsoft. Click the Close (X) when finished. Restart a sleeping device: Press the Power button. Access Help and Support from Charms: Open Charms (point to upper or lower r ight cor ner ); Click Settings; Click Help (suggested topics for wher e you ar e, will appear ); Click on a r elevant topic (or choose Help to get a sear ch box). IF you expect to be away for an extended per iod, you should use ShutDown (Charms, Settings, Power, ShutDown).
