Chief Joseph Middle School
PROGRAM GUIDE
Our Mission
We promote academic excellence and social responsibility in a safe learning
community as all students are guided toward their maximum potential.
We Believe …
!
Individuals must be able to access, use, and apply information in order to make positive
personal, community, and global decisions.
!
Personal skill to maintain physical, emotional, and mental balance, as well as
interpersonal relationships, will always be essential.
!
Educators must use a variety of instructional methods to facilitate learning for all
students in an emotionally and physically safe environment.
!
A team effort of parents, community, and staff is necessary for our school to be
effective.
!
Learning must be meaningful, relevant, stimulating, and challenging.
A Community of Learners
The great strategist, Chief Joseph, played a major role in the tragic last phase of the “Indian
Wars” in the far West. He fought long and hard for the freedoms of his tribe. His surrender took
place at a battlefield in the Bears Paw Mountains (near Chinook, MT). Noted for his humanity
in warfare, Chief Joseph thereafter devoted his efforts to helping his people learn peaceful
ways. The surrender took place at a battlefield in the Bears Paw Mountains (near Chinook,
MT), just 40 miles south of the Canadian border and freedom. In his surrender speech, Chief
Joseph proclaimed,
“It is cold and we have no blankets. The little children are freezing to death. My people,
some of them, have run away to the hills and have no blankets, no food. No one knows
where they are--perhaps freezing to death. I want to have time to look for my children
and see how many I can find. Maybe I shall find them among the dead. Hear me, my
chiefs. I am tired. My heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands, I will fight
no more forever.”
The academic and personal standards expected of students at Chief Joseph Middle School are
high. CJMS expects that all students will be successful and actively engaged in challenging,
high-interest curricula. The faculty and staff embrace a vision of a nurturing environment to
help develop students who, like Chief Joseph, are critical and compassionate thinkers, lifelong
learners and informed participants in local and world affairs, and conscious of the shared
humanity that binds all people together. We are a rich, varied learning community that values
the contributions of all its members and strives to make them effective communicators and
global citizens.
The CJMS student community values personal accountability, and academic challenge. This is
clear whether you visit a classroom or talk to a student in the hallway. Teacher collaboration is
the norm, creating a culture of sharing and respect. Teams of teachers work at knowing their
students well. The parent and community value active and engaged learning for their students.

COURSE OVERVIEW
Our Program
In this rich learning community, several significant characteristics stand out. The students and staff
are divided into six “teams”, which create a smaller, more personal connection for students. These
teams build pride and camaraderie, monitor homework and academic progress, communicate
regularly with parents, and coordinate integrated curricular work. They link students to counselors
and other school services, and provide interventions to ensure that no one is “falling through the
cracks”. Another unique characteristic is the tremendous commitment of the teaching staff to using
the best instructional strategies available. Classrooms are alive with actively engaged learners,
stimulating conversations, cooperative groups, and dynamic student presentations. Colorful projects
and written work cover the walls. Collaboration characterizes the professional community at CJMS;
teachers plan units and engage in professional development together, ensuring a consistent,
rigorous instruction for all students.
