Health and wellness education The Living Well Health Center’s team of providers and staff provide a broad curriculum of seminars and classes designed to help you achieve your best health. Wellness Seminars are offered every Wednesday and topics will vary. Each Thursday we offer American CPR/First Aid and Yoga for the Office. Each Monday and Tuesday we offer Mindfulness sessions. See the schedule below for the weekly and monthly topics offered. All events are free unless otherwise noted. All scheduled times are Pacific Standard Time. The Happiness RX Wednesday, May 11, 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. Building B21, Living Well Health Center conference room – Skype participation also available Happiness and health go hand-in-hand. A great outlook can not only improve your mood, but also improve how you feel physically. Speaker Janet Novinger from Wellspring EAP will discuss how happiness improves your overall health, how to determine which factors contribute to your personal happiness, and how to discover practical techniques for increasing happiness and decreasing pessimism. Bicycle Commuting: Tips, Tricks and the Law Wednesday, May 18, 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. Available only via Skype Tired of sitting in traffic every day? May is National Bike Month, and May 20 is National Bike to Work Day. If you’ve always wanted to try biking to work, but were unsure where to start, join Melissa Fowler to learn effective strategies to get to work on two wheels. The seminar will cover gear essentials, how to ride in traffic and Washington state bicycle laws to help you be a confident commuter. Sleep Well: Tips for International Travelers Wednesday, May 25, 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. Building B21, Living Well Health Center conference room – Skype participation also available We’ve all felt it at one point in our lives: Jet lag. And that rough transition intensifies when you’re traveling across continents or oceans. International travel can confuse your body, leading to a variety of symptoms, from poor sleep and decreased alertness to digestive problems and irritability. Join the Living Well Health Center and guest speaker Dr. Catherine Darley, ND, for a seminar on how you can help your body adjust more easily to a new time zone so you can feel good, be productive and enjoy your trip. June’s Wednesday Wellness Seminars Growth Mindset Wednesday, June 1, 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. Building B21, Living Well Health Center conference room – Skype participation also available Learn about what growth mindset is, and how to unblock growth by recognizing the mind and its thought patterns that contribute to a “fixed” mindset. Simple tools will be discussed and a guided meditation will be used as a tool for unlocking your growth potential. The Science of Willpower Wednesday, June 8, 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. Building B21, Living Well Health Center conference room – Skype participation also available Do you sometimes feel like, if you just had the willpower, you could easily accomplish your health and wellness goals? You’re not alone. But how can we strengthen our willpower? Alice Bowman, Living Well Health Center wellness coach, will answer that and other questions during an insightful discussion about the science of willpower. Discover what willpower is and why it is imperative for successful behavior change. Learn the science behind our working minds and deepen your understanding of the brain, in addition to strategies and experiments that you can implement in order to strengthen your willpower and reach your goals. Your Brain on Exercise Wednesday, June 15, 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. Building B21, Living Well Health Center conference room – Skype participation also available Heart rate, BMI, muscle tone — most people know what exercise can do for our bodies. But many don’t think about what happens to our brain when we work out. In this seminar, Melissa Fowler, Living Well Health Center wellness coach, will discuss the latest neuroscience research into the effects of exercise on the brain. Optimize Your Energy: Reduce Stress Wednesday, June 22, 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. Building B21, Living Well Health Center conference room – Skype participation also available Join Kris Josue, Wellspring EAP, to learn about the tools available to assess your current stress levels, identify the causes and effects of stress on your physical and mental health, and practice ways to cope with stress and change. July’s Wednesday Wellness Seminars What You Need to Know About Stroke Wednesday, July 13, 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. Building B21, Living Well Health Center conference room – Skype participation also available Catching a stroke early can be essential to recovery. But what are the signs and symptoms of strokes? Dr. Michael Levitt, UW Medicine, will discuss the diagnosis and treatment of different kinds of stroke, including advanced/cutting edge neuroimaging techniques, minimally invasive treatment, and education about recognizing and treating the symptoms of stroke. Open and Respectful Communication with Teens and Tweens Wednesday, July 20, 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. Building B21, Living Well Health Center conference room – Skype participation also available The tween and teen years can be some of the toughest for parents to navigate. Join Sherri Gazzitt, Wellspring EAP, to discuss and acknowledge the challenges of communication with this age group as they are gaining their independence. You’ll learn some skills in communicating with your teen, even when emotions are running high, and develop an action plan for healthy communication.
