County Council members Josh Wagner and Deb Denys discussed Volusia County beaches and our economy at the Chamber Breakfast Connection on April 29 at the Riverside Pavilion. Brendan Galbreath, owner of Aunt Catfish’s on the River, facilitated the meeting, inviting comments on development, special events and the beaches as they impact the economy in cities throughout Volusia County. The County Council will be discussing ordinances that would take driving off 1,300 feet of beach in the central Daytona tourist district to accommodate three major resort hotel projects, in exchange for significant investment in off-beach parking and a guarantee of County Sponsored by ownership. That Council meeting is scheduled for May 7 at the County Administration Building in DeLand. Your Chamber staff and Board have been working on your behalf in many arenas. We are getting ready for the Annual Business Expo and the Mega Mixer, both very excellent ways for you to showcase your business. I hope many of you will take advantage of these worthwhile programs. Debbie, Frank Crooks and I had an opportunity to travel to Tavares to see their waterfront project and to speak with their city officials about how they have marketed Tavares as the “Seaplane Capital of the World.” I hope to have the Port Orange and South Daytona City Councils travel there to see the progress Tavares has made in seven short years. It could provide some great ideas for moving forward with our waterfront projects. Our new member receptions have been very well attended and it seems that there is a lot of new networking happening in our Chamber. Please make it a priority to attend at least one of the mix and mingles, business after hours or lunch program per month so as to stay connected with the business community. We receive from an organization in relation to what we put in. Staying connected to the community through the smaller groups ist he way to keep our Chamber vibrant and to keep each of you in tune with the goings on in our communities. Clyde Morris Blvd. #301 Port Orange, FL 32129 David has been with American Leak Detection for 14 1/2 years: 13 ½ years in the Daytona office and 1 year in the New York City office, starting up that American Leak Detection franchise. David is from Jersey City, New Jersey. He left New Jersey in 1987 and moved to Ormond Beach with his sister's family. He joined the U.S. Navy and graduated from submarine school. He was stationed in Charleston S.C. on the USS Benjamin Franklin (SSBN 640,) a nuclear submarine, at the rate of machinist mate seaman. Little did he know the skills he mastered on that nuclear sub would help him later on in life as a Leak Detection Specialist. After leaving the Navy, David became a Commercial Certified Underwater Welder/ Construction/ Surveyor. In 1999 a diving injury caused him to find another occupation. He found other work in the Daytona area while helping at his sister's motel. It was there where he met Terry Bachi, the previous owner of American Leak Detection while Terry performed a leak detection on his sister's motel pool! The Tradewinds May.2015 • This type of work appealed to David, so he completed an application, passed the interview process and was hired in 2000. Throughout the years, the office staff has received many phone calls, emails, letters and online reviews, complimenting David. His professionalism and patience with customers has established him as Daytona's go-to-guy when it comes to finding mystery leaks. David has the uncanny ability to explain complex, problematic leak issues and pool systems in a language our customers understand. Because of this, he is a major asset to our company and our customers often ask for him by name. In 2010 he won the “Technician of the Year” award from American Leak Detection, traveling to Miami to receive his award at the company corporate meeting. This award is given to technicians who provide exemplary customer service. With over 340 franchises, we are very fortunate to have David here in our area, because he provides this level of customer service day-in and day-out. David lives in Port Orange with his girlfriend Rachel Learned, and their pets: Tiff (a Neapolitan mastiff), Pugsly (a Pug), Marvin (a feral kitten), and Maverick (a ferret). They plan on staying in the Port Orange/ South Daytona area for many years to come. 3 • Phone 386-761-1601 • www.pschamber.com Chamber Events Spring Business Expo and Silent Auction Thursday, May 21 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the BUSINESS POWER HOUR PALMETTO CLUB TECHNOLOGY FOR YOUR BUSINESS Wednesday, May 13, 2015 12:00 Noon to 1:00 p.m. Riverside Pavilion Presented by 1000 S.
