The Language of Coaching The following tips will help you when creating communication documents that may be full of coaching language. Using plain English will ensure your audience finds it easier to engage with your materials. The Language of Coaching • Plain English is not about ‘dumbing down’, but is about clarity of message. • The average sentence length should be between 15 and 20 words. • Whenever you write, always think about who will be reading it. • Avoid unnecessary acronyms. If you must use them, spell them out at first use. • Use a short, punchy sentence at the beginning of your text to introduce the content. • Use active sentences instead of passive, as they are clearer and sharper. • Use everyday language and avoid unnecessary words. • Read out loud what you have written. If you have used overly formal words, these will stand out. • Remember, you are writing to inform, not to impress. • Technical words have their place, but think about the audience you are addressing. • Ask a colleague to read through your copy to check clarity. If they are not close to the subject, even better. They will let you know if you have included too much technical language. • Use bullet points when listing lots of information. • Use links to signpost readers to further relevant information, instead of trying to explain everything within your document.
