In order to succeed, the new missions would need a steady stream of
supplies. Spain began looking for a suitable midpoint for supply caravans
traveling from central Mexico to East Texas. Father Antonio de
Buenaventura y Olivares was stationed at Mission San Juan Bautista on
the Rio Grande. He suggested that Spain should build the support post
near the San Antonio River. He and Martin de Alarcón were given
permission to establish the much-needed midpoint settlement.
