Naming Acids
Textbook Section – Chapter 7.1
Today’s Learning Targets
1.
2.
Name and write formulas for binary acids.
Name and write formulas for oxyacids.
Acids
• Acids
• Compound that produces H+ in water
• Binary Acids
• 2 elements –
• Oxy Acids
• At least 3 elements –
Naming Binary Acids
• Start with hydro• End with –ic acid
• Examples
• HF =
• H2S* =
Formulas for Binary Acids
●
●
●
●
Recognize that it’s an acid.
Recognize that it’s a binary acid.
Write H, followed by the element in the name.
○
If element is in group 16, then put a 2 with the H
○
If element is in group 17, then you need 1 H
Examples:
○
hydroselenic acid =
○
hydrochloric acid =
Naming OxyAcids
● Based on the name of the polyatomic ion
○ If polyatomic ends in –ate, acid ends in –ic
○ If polyatomic ends in –ite, acid ends in –ous
○ NO HYDRO OUT FRONT!!!
● Examples:
○ HNO3 =
○ H2SO3 =
○ H3PO4 =
Formulas for OxyAcids
• Recognize that it’s an acid.
• Recognize that it’s an oxyacid.
• Find the polyatomic ion that corresponds to the name:
• -ic = -ate polyatomic
• -ous = -ite polyatomic
• Write H, followed by the correct polyatomic.
• The charge on the polyatomic will tell you how many
H’s are needed.
• Examples:
• hypochlorous acid =
• sulfuric acid =
