The Great Falls Symphony

INTRODUCING
Grant Harville
OUR NEW MUSIC DIRECTOR
AND CONDUCTOR
Greetings! As I begin my tenure, I relish the opportunity to continue the
Symphony’s legacy of bringing musical excellence to Great Falls.
I’m chomping at the bit to start working with these wonderful musicians,
and to get to know the community–you all–as well. It looks to be a
fascinating and deeply rewarding journey.
The 2017-2018 season will be a brilliant and rousing affair, featuring
exciting up-and-coming guest artists, all-time greats like Beethoven’s Ninth
with the Symphonic Choir, some of my favorite film scores, and the
continuing beautiful work of our resident chamber ensembles, the
Cascade Quartet and Chinook Winds Quintet. I hope you will be a part of it.
Take a look through the brochure to see what the season has to offer;
I’m sure you’ll find it enticing. And if you have any questions, well, feel free
to stop me if you see me on the street.
All the best, and see you at the Symphony.
Grant Harville
LIVE & LET DIE
A Symphonic Tribute to Paul McCartney
SPECIAL EVENT!
WEDNESDAY
September 20 2017
7:30PM
Veteran of the Broadway hit Beatlemania, Tony Kishman has toured worldwide
with productions of Twist and Shout, Classical Mystery Tour, All You Need Is Love, and
Legends in Concert. Considered the “quintessential Paul McCartney,” he has an uncanny
resemblance both visually and vocally to the beloved Beatle. Sir Paul McCartney himself
said, “Tony Kishman is a great musician.”
The Great Falls Symphony Orchestra joins Live & Let Die’s four-piece band, led by
Kishman (vocals, lead guitar, bass guitar, piano, drums), to perform fully orchestrated hits
from the legendary Beatles catalog and Paul McCartney’s phenomenal post-Beatle career.
This tribute to the most successful band of all time includes: Hey Jude, Penny Lane,
Live and Let Die, Yesterday, My Love, Uncle Albert, Let It Be, Maybe I’m Amazed,
Hello Good-Bye, Long and Winding Road, Silly Love Songs, When I’m Sixty-Four,
Jet, Get Back, and many more! Additional information at LiveandLetDieShow.com.

SEASON
PREMIERE!
Guitar Master
SATURDAY
September 30 2017
7:30PM
Applauded by the Calgary Herald as “…talented, sensitive…brilliant,” Jiji is an adventurous
artist on both acoustic and electric guitar, playing an extensive range of music from
traditional and contemporary classical music to free improvisation. Her impeccable
musicianship, combined with compelling stage presence and fascinating repertoire, earned
the Korean guitarist First Prize at the 2016 Concert Artists Guild International Competition.
Jiji’s performance will feature the lyric beauty and gentle sensuality of Joaquín Rodrigo’s
Concierto de Aranjuez, the number one most-popular guitar concerto ever written.
The composer described it as capturing “the fragrance of magnolias, the singing of birds,
and the gushing of fountains” in the gardens of Aranjuez.
The Kansas City Star described her as “A graceful and nuanced player,” adding that “... she
presented an intimate, captivating performance.” Welcome Maestro Grant Harville, our
new music director and conductor, at this stellar and exciting season premiere concert!

Halloween Spooktacular
SUNDAY
October 29 2017
3PM
Bring your entire family to our Symphony Halloween Party! We’ll have treats and
fun activities for the kids. Everyone is invited to wear their Halloween costumes for this
spooky and fun afternoon. The orchestra members will also dress the part to play music
that ranges from creepy and crazy to magical and magnificent.
Witches and goblins populate Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain which was
featured in Disney’s Fantasia. Danny Elfman has created some of the spookiest music for
movies like Sleepy Hollow, Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride. Experience
music that will give you goosebumps and send shivers racing up and down your spine!
Violinist and special guest Kobe Rowe will be featured on the program as he performs
Camille Saint-Saëns’ Danse Macabre. This gifted young musician is a 2017 winner of
the Montana Association of Symphony Orchestras Young Artist Competition. Kobe is a
prodigy with technique and artistry that’s sure to inspire.

Holiday Harmony
SUNDAY
December 3 2017
3PM
Make this annual holiday event a family tradition and create lasting memories.
Music Director Grant Harville will conduct this matinee performance with the Orchestra
and Symphonic Choir performing the season’s favorite music. You can sing along to
carols and you may even get a glimpse of Santa.
Karolju is Christopher Rouse’s original suite of carols for orchestra and choir, with a nod
to Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. Listen for the paraphrased “O Fortuna.” From the San Francisco
Chronicle review:“Vivacious rhythms and sweet, simple harmonies”and“[it’s] carol-icious.”
An Evergreen Christmas combines “Oh Christmas Tree,” “The Holly and the Ivy,” and
“Deck the Halls with Boughs of Holly” in a medley that is both rousing and tender. A Charlie Brown
Christmas began as a low-budget soundtrack for a 1965 television special (each member of
the Vince Guaraldi Trio was paid just $128 for their initial work.) Jazzy, whimsical and joyous,
it defied expectations, became a massive hit, and joined the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2007.

Love is in the Air
SATURDAY
February 10 2018
7:30PM
Make it a date night of romance. Sip wine amd savor dinner at your favorite restaurant,
then join us for an hour of passionate, live music. Howard Hanson’s “Romantic” Symphony
premiered in 1930. He aimed to “create a work that was young in spirit, lyrical and
romantic in temperament, and simple and direct in expression.” Let Cesar Franck’s lush,
evocative, richly chromatic, and deeply affecting Psyche and Eros surround you.
The Dallas Morning News reviewed our guest artist William Hagen: “Even in an age when
brilliant young violinists seem to grow on trees, Hagen is a standout. He tossed off the most
virtuosic passages with amazing precision, but he also made music ... he always knew
where the music was going and why.” Hagen will perform Dvořák’s beautiful Romance,
and the dazzling Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso by Camille Saint-Saëns.
After the music, join us on stage for refreshments. Mingle and meet the musicians and
conductor, share your appreciation, ask questions, and get to know your Symphony!

Beethoven’s Ninth “Ode to Joy”
SATURDAY
March 24 2018
7:30PM
Bask in this all-Beethoven concert! Uniting piano, voices and orchestra, Ludvig van
Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy is widely felt to be an early version of the “Ode to Joy” theme
from the thrilling and magnificent Ninth Symphony. Pianist Josh Wright is featured in
the opening and is later joined by vocal soloists and the Great Falls Symphonic Choir.
Symphony No. 9 in D minor, also known as “The Choral,” is Beethoven’s final complete
symphony and is almost universally considered by critics to be his greatest masterpiece.
It is still one of the most performed symphonies in the world.
Beethoven’s Ninth was the first example of a major composer using voices in a symphony.
The words, taken from Friedrich Schiller’s 1785 poem “Ode to Joy,” are sung during the final
movement by four vocal soloists and a chorus. At the 1824 premiere, the jubilant audience
acclaimed Beethoven–who could not hear the applause–with five standing ovations,
and with hands, hats, and handkerchiefs in the air!

SATURDAY
April 28 2018
7:30PM
Join us for a magical night of movie music! Maestro Grant Harville will hand pick his
favorites from the greatest film score composers of all time, including George Gershwin’s
An American in Paris and Sergei Prokofiev’s suite from the 1934 film Lieutenant Kije.
What are YOUR favorites? Would you choose Dances with Wolves or Out of Africa by
John Barry? Or is John Williams your composer, with his great themes for Star Wars,
Schindler’s List, and the Harry Potter movies? Many love Ennio Morricone for his
“spaghetti western” themes like The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. Hans Zimmer is
known for his Oscar-winner The Lion King and for The Dark Knight and Gladiator.
Did you know that the best selling orchestral soundtrack of all time is Titanic by James
Horner? He’s also known for Aliens, Field of Dreams, Avatar and Braveheart.
YOU will have the opportunity to choose one of the selections for this thrilling concert of
film scores through the decades. Join us–you can almost smell the popcorn!

Cascade String Quartet
Chamber Music – Up Close and Personal
Speaking for the Cascade Quartet, Megan Karls said, “We love what we do. We have all devoted
our lives–our entire beings–to making music.” Their passion is obvious and contagious.
In the October “Autumn Sunrise” concerts, Haydn’s luminous Sunrise Quartet and the introspective,
passionate Company by minimalist composer Philip Glass provide contrasting styles. Nielsen’s
Quartet in G is restless with youthful energy, incorporating playful Danish fiddle tunes. Listen
for that glorious moment when all the big themes come together at the end.
In our January “Song & Dance” concerts, guest artist Sarah Dassinger will interpret Erwin
Schulhoff’s rustic, raw, and physical Five Pieces in movement. Audiences loved Sarah’s dance
collaboration with the Chinook Winds last season. Franz Schubert excelled at writing vocal
music, so the melodies of his quartets are often based on songs that were popular in his time.
We’re thrilled to have Mark Bergman–teacher, conductor, composer, and virtuosic bass player –
join us on the Dvořák Bass Quintet in April. The piece is a tour de force, but also pastoral.
“You can hear the countryside in the slow movement,” says Megan. Adding double bass to
the quartet adds a wonderful sense of space and an open-air quality.
With chamber music’s up-close intimacy, you not only hear the music, you see where it’s going.

Classical, Whimsical, and Wicked
The Chinook Winds takes great pride in presenting concerts that are “out of the box.”
We are constantly searching for ways to collaborate with our community and give our
audiences memorable performances that will surprise and delight.
We’re planning a feast for your ears in our September “Fall Flavors.” We’ll present a few
delicious musical pairings–perhaps a spicy Latin tune followed by a sumptuous and sweet
French confection? Or a light and tasty bagatelle matched with an effervescent Mozart?
In November, our “Story Time” concerts explore the combination of storytelling and music.
In Opus Number Zoo, each of us take turns delivering rapid-fire narration along with the
lively tmusic. It’s a unique, neo-Classical work that is both whimsical and wicked.
Our “Quintet + 1”concerts feature the Chinook Winds with special guests. Soprano Heather
Barnes, a frequent guest artist with the Helena Symphony Orchestra, performs Barber’s
Knoxville: Summer of 1915, a sublime combination of music, lyrics, and voice. University 2017 -18
