Spiral method:
35 years experience
The Spiral® method was designed in 1973 to automate the routine
work of bacterial enumeration by Dr. Ed Campbell, researcher at the
FDA (Food & Drug Administration). With François Jalenques, friend
and founder of interscience, they patented an updated method
in 1992.
Since then Spiral® automatic platers have been a reference for
applications in food microbiology, medical bacteriology, research on
food preservatives or cosmetological factors in compliance with the
AFNOR V08-100 and ISO 7218 standards.
Today interscience is proud to launch the 4th generation of
Spiral® platers with easySpiral® Dilute: the world's first automatic
diluter & plater.

interscience is proud to introduce easySpiral® Dilute, a 2-in-1 automatic diluter and plater, which allows you
to do 5 x 1/10th serial dilutions. It will then automatically plate on 1 single Petri dish, with a countable range of 30 to
10 million countable CFU/mL.

Why use an automatic diluter & plater ?
easySpiral® Dilute allows you to save 50 % on consumables and 50% on your time.

Questions
What is special about
the easySpiral® Dilute ?
easySpiral® Dilute is the only 2-in-1 equipment
on the market making automatic serial dilutions and standardized plating.
I usually use 9 mL tubes
and 1 mL sample...
The accuracy of
easySpiral® Dilute plater
is high: 0.5%.
How can I check it?
It is easy and automatic.
Press on the test procedure button which fills
a beaker with 0.5 mL and another one with
4.5 mL. Weight the dispensed volume to verify the results.
The easySpiral® Dilute has a 0.5 % precision
and typical accuracy on 4.5 mL and 0.5
mL volumes thanks to its high precision
HamiltonTM glass syringe.
Common precision for the filling of the 9 mL
tubes is 2% and pipettes precision for the
1 mL intake is 2%, and they must be often
calibrated and checked.
Conclusion, you can obtain much higher
precision with volumes cut by half!
I need to make 10-7 dilutions.
How can I do it ?
Can I use peptone water
as diluent?
No, because all diluents with nutriments
can result in contamination of the machine
and of the sample.
You can use any saline solution, for example
ringer solution or NaCl solution. As the
bacteria stay in the beakers for only a few
seconds before going on a nutriment solution
on the agar, the dilution with only a saline solution has no consequence on the overall count.
6
The easySpiral® Dilute can do as many
dilution as you wish.
Do a 10-5 dilution, take the last beaker and
place it as the mother sample and then
proceed with a new automatic dilution
sequence.
